In the past we've considered it acceptable, but I thought I remembered reading something in the FAQ which said you couldn't, and I really don't want to dig through there again. |
| Sarella Starshine04-28-05, 11:07 PM | why wouldn't you be able to target yourself if you match the discription of what the spell effects? |
| Nom04-28-05, 11:23 PM | Or, to paraphrase Sarella, "Yes". Occasionally, you will want to countermand this due to common sense, such as in the case of shield other, which never explicitly states that you can't use the spell on yourself (though it's pretty clear from both name and descriptive text that this is what is intended). |
| Keenath04-28-05, 11:33 PM | Well, there's no reason you CAN'T target yourself with Shield Other. It's just a waste of a spell, because then you just take half damage twice... I mean, feel free to use a second level slot for a measley +1 AC and saves... I'll be over here casting Protection From Whatever... |

There's no absolute provision in the rules that you can't do it. Spells with a target of "Self" are listed that way because Self is the ONLY legitimate target. Otherwise, any spell you cast that affects others can affect you too if you fall into the category of legitimate targets AND the area of effect can include yourself (a cone or line-shaped spell, for example, cannot target yourself - it expands outward AWAY from you). |
