Dragen White 02-23-06, 12:19 PM	ok heres the deal, i am about to start a new campaign, and im wanting to get away from magic for awhile, soooo i thought about playing the old fashioned damage soaker, a character that can take it and dish it out, this being, i was thinking about going barbarian, or fighter (barbarian has DR, but its so slow to get it!!!) Here is the theme i was thinking off, using feats to up mr DR/- and Health (dragons tougness etc.) and since the - is still affected by magic, carry round a ring of antimagic or something, just to snuff those old DR bypassing blankity blank. I was even thinking about being some sort of shape shifter to take the prestige class war shaper to be immune to crits, and etc. Trying to fit this all together is a challange, espeacilly if i may not have the books at hand, so if anyone can help with some ideas of what race i could play, one preferably with as low as a level modifier as possible. and what feats / class would be the best to go with what im wanting to do, plus using magic wrathfull healing weapons (in enemys and allies) later on, but for know i think i might be level 1, so any ideas would be great thanks!!!
Shaggy_Shaggs 02-23-06, 12:30 PM	I'm planning to try this out myself when I get the opportunity, it's a bit more offensively oriented than you're probably looking for but it's something to consider anyway. Changeling 1 - Barbarian - Destructive Rage 2 - Fighter - Power Attack 3 - Fighter - Cleave, Improved Toughness 4 - Barbarian -- 5 - Warshaper -- 6 - Warshaper - Multiattack 7 - Warshaper - 8 - Warshaper - 9 - Rogue - Intimidating Rage 10 - Rogue - 11 - Frenzied Berserker - 12 - Frenzied Berserker - Craven 13 - Frenzied Berserker - 14 - Frenzied Berserker - 15 - Frenzied Berserker - Combat Reflexes 16 - Frenzied Berserker - 17 - Frenzied Berserker - 18 - Frenzied Berserker - Great Cleave 19 - Frenzied Berserker - 20 - Frenzied Berserker - You'd lose out on quite a few skill points not taking Rogue as the 1st level, but you get into Warshaper as fast as possible to get that lovely +4 Con and Fast Healing, and I figure starting Barbarian is worth it anyway for the increased survivability at the fragile low levels. Craven is from Champions of Ruin and makes the sneak attack from 2 levels of rogue work a HELL of a lot better.
Bakrin 02-23-06, 12:49 PM	If you want a first level tank (no LA), best bet is to go with a Dwarf with a level of barbarian and to take improved toughness as your first feet. The level of Barbarian gives you that +4 con for the current battle, and the feat gives you an effective +2 to con that's always on. A better long-term solution would be to choose a shifter with the beast-hide trait. You still get the +2 con for when you need it, as well as +2 nat. armor. Even better, this lets you take levels in warshaper as soon as possible, which gives you an extra +4 to Str and Con, always on. You may wish to throw in a couple of levels of fighter to get heavy armor proficiency (as well as to get more feats available to you), or you could pay for mithral fullplate and be a shiny barb :D. Long term options include frenzied berzerker, the ultimate tank. When frenzied, you CAN'T die from hp loss, and it stacks with rage. If you can arrange it, werebear or wereboar is a definite option. Depite the level adjustment of +3, the +8 con from the bear will make up for lost HD. I played a werebear at some point, and with average hp he beat out an equivalent fighter (starting with same base con) by the 4th HD, I think. There's a progression on the Wizards site for "leveling" in werebear, once you acquire it. Any kind of lycanthropy obviously qualifies you for the warshaper, so that's a plus.

Kerri_Evanwood 02-23-06, 04:50 PM	You would do well to visit the CO boards about this. My question is, would you like to better at defending or attackig? From my experiences, it's not possible to be an expert at both. You can be an expert at one and mediocre at the other, or you can be skilled (but not an expert) at both.
