We're about to start a level 1 FR campaign with some new players. I am starting a level 1 human wizard I have two feats ( I can never pick feats) you can use any complete book or FR book.

I need two feats which would benefit a level 1 wizard best

any suggestions ?

I'd take a look at Luck of Heroes (from one of the FR books). It is a very good feat for anyone.

Collegiate Wizard from Complete Arcane is good for first level Wizards, as is Spell Focus.

Just for your future information, you should really post this in the "Skills and Feats" board. You'll probably get more responses that way :)

Hope this helps!

Spell Penetration is good, but not really til higher levels. At first level, enemies are unlikely to have SR.

Toughness! :gah: :ghosted:

No offense at all intended hh, but NEVER take Toughness! Friends don't let friends take Toughness. If you really need the hp wait until you qualify for Improved Toughness (which is so much better). In the short run it might seem helpful, but at higher levels you'll regret it.

i would actually recomend the CO boards as the best place to post something like how to make a good character

i would never recomend toughness... ever, unless there is a pre-requisite, there is no point in toughness, and besides that there is a feat in one of hte FR books called midn over matter that adds you int bonus to your hp for first level only. which for a wizard is much better than toughness.

besides that i would ask yourself where you plan to go with your character. if you plan on prestiging then look at what prestige classes you plan on taking and the feat pre-requisites so that you can figure out how many feats you need to have by a certain level and therefore how mayn feats you have left to choose on your own.

No offence boys, but probably you didn't read exactly the OP.
He is going to play a L1 wizard.
i repeat: he is to play a L1 wizard

probably in this situation a feat that can actually almost double your starting HP is one of the best choice he could do.

i know at 5-6th level probably those 3 extra hp won't keep him alive, but at 1st, 2nd and 3rd level those 3 hp could mean life instead of death

we all know thoughness is a very situational feat, and we all know this is exactly the situation that makes it worth.

mind over matter is a feat in a forget which FR handbook that is much better than toughness and that are level 3 he won't be regretting. if HPs are that important go dwarf, get 1 more hp a level, which becomes better than toughness starting at level 4

Spellcasting Prodidgy (effectively increases your spell using ability (i.e. INT) by two for purposes of bonuses spells and spell DC. As for your 2nd feat I'd say either spell focus, improved initiative, or maybe lightning reflexes/great fortitude, toughness is a good choice too.

It depends on what region you are from, you can get regional feats that you can only take at 1st level. Some good ones from PGtF for Wizards are: Dauntless~+5 hp (Damara, Great Dale, Impiltur, Moonshaes), Discipline~+2 bonus on will saves, and concentration checks(Aglarond, Cormyr, Shadovar, Shou Expatriate, Thay)....Like I said, depending on your region, you can get some good ones. From PHB, I actually don't take Spell Mastery until a higher level than first....If you wait until 6th or 9th level, then you can Master that fireball, lightning bolt, cone of cold, or teleport.

i agree with spellcasting prodigy, also arcane schooling is always useful to have as a backup. MAGE HAND ROCKS!

1. Spellcasting Prodigy
2. "Not Toughness", but "Luck of Heroes" if you can.

If you die at lv 1 you make new character, if you don't you'll be stuck with the worst feat in the game... worse than Dodge, because Dodge is PreReq for a lot of other feats. If you really wan't to survive at first level, and don't mind throwing away a feat, choose "Run" instead (also makes for an interesting "scream like a girl and run away" scenario).

Spellcasting Prodigy and Point Blank Shot.

How does Point Blank Shot help? That only affects ranged weapons, not spells.

Improved Initiative. Get that feat or you will die.

I dont know about many FR feats, but another good core feat for a low level Wizard is Skill Focus(Concentration).

Actually, Point Blank Shot does help ranged touch attack spells...such as the lesser orb spells...scorching ray, etc.

actually...i'd suggest Martial weapons feat [for shortbow] this will basically let you double as an archer (especially if you have a dex bonus) when you run out of spells (at first level this happens almost instantly)- also this lets you wizard use a longsword without penalty- this will be useful later on when you keep finding those magical weapons- you'll be able to use most of them!!!!

If you play a human and get a second free feat- toughness isn't a bad choice, neither are improved initiative, dodge, combat casting and some of the other "basic" feats...

I actually considered playing a wizard that had the power attack feat- which he'd use as often as he cast "true strike"- but that never materialized...

Ask your DM if he/she will allow Spellfire...probably overpowered but if DM approves it its his/her own fault...
