Ok, I know this may seem like a silly question, but when calculating initiative it's 1d20 + base + ability, right? Ok, so we all know what a d20 is, and ability is the dex bonus (if any), but what the heck is the base number supposed to be? Is it the same number used for base attack? Or is there a seperate base for initiative?? My friend and I looked in both 3.0 and 3.5 player's books and we can't seem to find a straight answer. If any more experienced players out there can answer this for us, that would be cool! Thanks...

Uh, never heard of base anything for initiative. Last time I checked, it was 1d20 + Dex, with additions for things like the Improved Initiative feat.

The character sheets i use say the init modifier is dex+misc, where are you seeing base?

Yeah, we kind of thought that. But we got these Forgotten Realms character sheets off the internet and they have a space under inititative to write in your "base". We were like: "Base?!? What base?" That's why we were confused; we thought maybe there was some base number we didn't know about. Maybe these character sheets we got are just lame, I dunno...
Anyhow, thanks for the help.

The character sheets are just lame.

You add your dex modifier, usually.

You might also add +4 for improved init, or +an extra ability, if you've taken certain PrCs, but generally, it's your dex, plus maybe improved init.
