12-17-03, 08:11 PM sorry to bother again, but the help still didnt do anything for me before....

Im trying to try to DM but people say im too inexperienced.

as far as playing a character:

each class for me had a flaw.

Paladin: I dont roleplay them well, i always get into troble for trying to arreast rougues in the party for trying to steal.

Cleric: they were fun for a while until i realizedhow cool they are when they are evil, ie. powerful spells, becoming a lich, evil items.
and often people get angry if i run neutral and i cast evil spells and whatnot. i have the book of vile darkness and it just has so many good stuff for evil clerics.

Rougue: i always wanted to play one, but whenever i try one, i always get yelled at for trying to become an assasin. and for some reason me playing a rougue leads to arguements.

Fighters: i dont like gooney characters.

Barbarian: see fighter.

Ranger: see fighter.

Druid: they really dont have anything good for them, sure they got wolves and bears, but if im gonna rely on summoning, id rather call demons as an evil cleric.

Wizard: the party always gets upset that i use area of effect spells and damage the party because they are in the way.
i tell them to not get close till i unload my area spells. but no. god forbid noone respects a high int score.

Sorcerer: see wizard.

Psion: see wizard.

Psywar: see fighter and wizard.

I dont know what i should do. either i dont enjoy playing that type of character, it ends up evil, or it hurts the party and i get killed/booted.

god and noone wants me to DM because im "Inexperienced".

Bard: the jack of all trades...... but you know the saying......

"jack of all trades, master of none"

they suck at what they do.

sure they can sing, but they have limited casting capability and fighting capability. and one hit they are down or more often DEAD.

Monk: see fighter, they still feel very gooney and it takes forever for them to get anything worthwhile.

Dragon, it sounds to me like you're playing them pretty well, it's just the other people and what they think should be the proper way to play a character is making it difficult for you. IMO, A Paladin should arrest a thief who breaks the law. There should be room for evil clerics. Rogues can become assassins.

However, without more information on how other people play, I can't be sure if they don't like it because it doesn't mesh with the campaign, or if they're just whining because they can't get away with it. (The Paladin arresting the Rogue for stealing sounds like an excellent example of this.) Could you tell us a bit more about the other players?

Also, running into a wizard's AOE effect spell when he's TOLD the rest of the party about it? Haven't these people heard of delaying or tactics? I sympathize with you on this.

12-17-03, 10:16 PM basically the other players are fighter types who thinbk they are strong just because they have 19 str and greatswords and dont want a wimpy spellcaster in the way.

in every game ive played, my evil lich cliric gets killed by the paladin.

the rougue thing with me running paladin is because i interrogated then and found out and they still did what they wanted to do. and i tryied to catch them, and they turn the whole party of fighters and barbarians against me with a well placed bluff check.

12-17-03, 10:30 PM Well, it sounds to me that the rest of your gaming group enjoys the game more than the roleplaying. For example, they like combat, right? They don't like talking to shopkeepers when purchasing items, correct?

If the rest of the players play in this manner, you can't convert them to your own style. Try to enjoy their playing style, or find another group.

If you want to mesh well with your current group, I recommend taking it easy. If the other paladin in the group doesn't mind when the rogue steals, then they're not roleplaying properly, and no one will appreciate it if you do. So, if you play a Rogue type character, only go off on stealing/killing sprees when its appropriate. If you're a Cleric, do your best to be good, heal the group, and only cast area spells that won't hurt your friends - spells that target only one creature, like "hold person" and "bestow curse" are more party-friendly. Instead of playing a paladin in a group of misfits, try playing a fighter or other fighter type instead, like a Ranger. Rangers don't have built-in "obey the law" tendencies, so you can let the rest of the group get away with their little crimes.

Face it: if they're playing the game like a hack 'n slash video game, you're going to have to play like that, too. That, or find another group. :(

12-17-03, 10:41 PM good advice, do you know anywhere i get get involved with some online groups at my level, im still fairly new to the game.

i have very little experience playing the game.....

ive only played in 3-4 campeigns.

that are more helpful and newbie friendly to me. i kind of wanna get involved in a group where im around more experienced roplayers so i could get quality help so i dont have to rely on these boards all the time.

12-17-03, 10:51 PM If you want to try some online games, the message boards here are a great start. From the "Message Board" main page, go to Wizards.COMmunity. Scroll down, and under "Games: Message Boards" you'll find a forum called "Read D&D/D20 Adventures". Go into this forum, read the forum handbook (at the top), and post a message in the "Setup and Meeting Hall" (also at the top). Tell them you're brand new to the boards, and are a newbie in general, tell them about your experiences, and are looking for a game to join. There are a lot of very friendly people there all the time, and a lot of them are starting games or looking for new players all the time. It's like a cult, but more time consuming and fewer goat sacrifices.
