| SOKAR08-21-05, 08:58 PM | Pick up the D&D basic game. Learn the basics, than buy the Player's handbook and memorize it. |
| LCD2YOU08-21-05, 09:07 PM | 6'2", 220? That's nice. Not sure what it has to do with DnD though. Well, the advise from SOKAR is sound. Another thing you can do is go to a hobby/game store that has DnD and games going on at some point. Just watch to see what is going on and how some people play. Many game stores have games to help sell their stuff so take a look. One thing though, "anywho"? |
| TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe08-21-05, 09:52 PM | One thing though, "anywho"? Anywho! (http://www.anywho.com) :D :P |
| miah23508-21-05, 10:08 PM | alright thanks guys any of you guys have AIM? if you privite message me, maybe you guys can help me, or if anyones from oregon do the same thing please |
| Tyler Do'Urden08-22-05, 12:56 AM | You're completely full of crap, aren't you. |
| JadeSpider964308-22-05, 01:56 AM | Now tyler, play nice.... ...or don't, what do I care? :rolleye2: miah, first I recommend that you hook up with experienced players and see how it works once it's working...if you like it...buy a PHB (Player's Handbook) and read it...then read it again....then read it AGAIN....Don't stop there...KEEP READING IT!! MEMORIZE THAT SUCKER!!! Your gaming will go much better once you know the bibleeerrrr I mean PHB by heart. |
| Tyler Do'Urden08-22-05, 02:07 AM | Now tyler, play nice.... Oh come on now. "i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs "? He's basically declaring "I'm a big sweaty jock." He's probably looking to "pick up some shorty geeks" or something equally mindless. |
| Rathje08-22-05, 03:49 AM | Regardless, Tyler, I think a little more diplomacy is in order. Especially for newer members. Now, to look into the game with the safety of not investing money into it to avoid risk, I suggest the SRD, which is found here (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html). Skim through that and see what you think. You can probably find some online forums or something like that to get the gist of how mechanics work, but keep in mind things function a little more or little less smooth at in-person sessions, depending on who you play with and how well you know the rules. |
| weasel fierce08-22-05, 04:11 AM | Im in Oregon, but I dont play 3.x, and it'll be a while before we will be playing D&D again (Godlike and Runequest currently). But feel free to add me. My AIM is weaselfierce22 |
| A Bigmouth Bard08-22-05, 07:59 AM | Oh come on now. "i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs "? He's basically declaring "I'm a big sweaty jock." He's probably looking to "pick up some shorty geeks" or something equally mindless. Hey, I'm 13 and I'm 5' 6". Not all of us are shorties. And look whos talking Mr. Do'Urden. :P -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok, back to the subject. Most of these "kind" people have answered your question(or cricized it) with excellent information. I'd completely agree with SOKAR and JadeSpider9643. Rathje got a great point on reviewing the forums since you can get most of your questions answered here. There are also some forums labled "101" or "1001" followed by something like "101 worst DMs/PCs" or "1001 ways you know your PCs didn't read the rules"(sorry if I mixed up the names :embarrass ). These are a great help and they can give you a laugh at the same time! :D |
| miah23508-22-05, 06:30 PM | Oh come on now. "i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs "? He's basically declaring "I'm a big sweaty jock." He's probably looking to "pick up some shorty geeks" or something equally mindless. seriously i just wanted to play put im seriously reconsidering it now cause it all ppl are like tyler i quit |
| l33t Shinobi08-22-05, 06:59 PM | we are not all like tyler, rest assured. i dont know if anyone has mentioned it, but 1.www.d20srd.org "the SRD" will be an invaluable asset, as will as 2. picking up the core books, (same as SRD but more user friendly IMO) and 3.seeing if you can observe a local campiagn. 4. lurk around the boards, pick up some info, and 5. see if you can get some friends to join you in your D&D qwest 6. most important is to have fun; it is after all, "just a game" ;) |
| miah23508-22-05, 07:58 PM | how much a players handbook go for? |
| GFC_Seracule08-22-05, 08:05 PM | 29.95, + tax. |
| geekboy8708-22-05, 08:09 PM | 35$ |
| Elemental_Master09-13-05, 04:11 PM | Pick up the D&D basic game. Learn the basics, than buy the Player's handbook and memorize it. Agrred its what I'm doing and I actually agree with Tyler I hate Jocks. No Offense. On amazon you can get it for $20. :) |
| EarthForce09-13-05, 09:03 PM | OK. For starters don't criticize the guy because he's athletic. He probably just felt like saying something positive about himself. I have known several athletes who play D&D, including a football player bigger than Miah235 who could likely snap me in half. Anyway, Players Handbooks are usaully found at local hobby stores or bookstores. You probably won't find them at places like Walmart(But I could be wrong). You also have the option of using an SRD. This site (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org) has several and there is another one here (http://www.d20srd.org). There generally aren't experience tables or step by step explanations in the SRDs(But they are free, minus the electricity to run your computer). So you might have to ask around for help if you go that route. The books cost money, but have more explanations and examples(not to mention you don't have to go online and/or print off a ton of stuff) so the choice is up to you. Give it some careful thought before you make the purchase and remember that if you just plan on going the buying route the DMs Guide And Monster Manual are also part of the core 3(But someone else might have those in your group). Like other posters mentioned, you should try and hook up with a group and see if you like the game before making a purchase. It's also important to have other people who are interested in the game to play with, since DMing for yourself doesn't really work out that well. Even better if you can find a group who already plays so you have someone on hand to explain things to you when they come up.(Just keep in mind that not all groups are good groups, some are quite disfunctional while others are great) Well, good luck, and don't get discouraged. |
| TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe09-13-05, 09:24 PM | I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around how long this thread has lived... :P Welcome to the club miah235. In case anyone wants to put you down for wanting to game....just remember, there are 27 year old married men out their gaming with their wives and kids...so if I've been at it for 15+ years now, as well as most of my friends...it can't be all that bad. |
| A Bigmouth Bard09-13-05, 09:25 PM | There are actually some libraries that carry the D&D core rule books! Just try not to get the 2.0 versions since some of the libraries near me have the old ones. Just look it up on your comp. or their's. If a library not near you has it you can always request it instead. P.S. Hey, I'm athletic and I play D&D. At least some of us exercise instead of stay inside all day, Mr. Do'Urden. :rolleye2: |
| Molitor09-14-05, 12:16 AM | Well I'm 6' 27'' and 1321 pounds and I already know how to play D&D. And I won't teach you.......so there! This post is obviously laced with sarcasm. HHAAHA |
| Kohdok09-14-05, 01:04 AM | P.S. Hey, I'm athletic and I play D&D. At least some of us exercise instead of stay inside all day. :rolleye2: Amen. The closest store that sells anything D&D is five miles away (Over hilly terrain with lots of cars in the hot texas sun), and I don't have a driver's liscense or even a bike, but I DO have a huge appetite for gaming. At my level, I think I could kill someone with my toes. (Partly because they are longer than normal toes and I can pick up quite heavy objects with them, but still...I inherited the long toes from my father.) (PS: 6'0" and 235 lbs. Used to be avid soccer player. w00t) Half-price books might have the things you are looking for, as some people also drop the habit and feel the need to sell their books. They'll be beat-up, but functional. |
| Asciiman09-14-05, 03:28 PM | i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs HOLY INSECURITY BATMAN!! |
| TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe09-14-05, 03:33 PM | Fight nice, kids. :P |
| Ogmug09-14-05, 03:35 PM | HOLY INSECURITY BATMAN!! *ponders . . who is more insecure. The one who makes a statement, or the one who comments negatively on that statement * ^ is irony as well (for now who is even more insecure.. the one who makes the statement, the one who comments negatively on the statement, or the one who comments on the comment of the statement) . . . ad infinitum |

| rbrt_Spade09-14-05, 03:55 PM | click here my dear friend-wotc recemmends (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/whatisdnd) i well i play varsity soccer, track and weightlift and like computers, girls, and fantasy books and dnd i guess im half nerd  /half jock :P only 140lbs and 5 8 though |
| Nurgan_the_drunked09-15-05, 06:47 AM | i guess im half nerd /half jock :P only 140lbs and 5 8 though This is worse than those Half-fiend Half-celestial abominations knocking about. It just reeks of munchkinism having both templates. |
| Phrennzy09-15-05, 11:46 AM | I can bench press my truck. That aside, My advice for learning how to play is check out the local game store for a game. My group would take a brand newby - we did, actually, my partner has been learning it. It's funny and refreshing to have someone play who isn't jaded to everything, and who has a new mindset towards his spells. He loves web and grease, and has only fireballed once. If you can't find a group at the gaming store, you can try online resources for finding players. Accessdenied.net worked to get me two players. While you wait on getting into a group (the best way to learn) is to go down to the bookstore and grab the PHB and sit down and start reading. You can also read the SRD. That can be found here. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35) |
| High Octane09-15-05, 12:14 PM | What the hell is with the venom at the guy saying something about himself? Anyway, find a group, join it, and they will teach you young padawan. |
| Phrennzy09-15-05, 12:53 PM | What the hell is with the venom at the guy saying something about himself? Anyway, find a group, join it, and they will teach you young padawan. There's a lot of insecurity about D&D being a 'nerd's game' and so when a big burly football player announces that in his first thread on the subject of learning D&D, people freak. But I really can bench press my truck. My biceps scare me they're so big. |
| Count Arioch the 28th09-15-05, 12:59 PM | To the original poster: If you hang around various gaming stores, you should be able to meet people whon play. It's pretty vital you at least own a PHB, but it's just as important to learn from people who already play. And if you're going to quti because of people like Tyler, well then be careful, there's a lot of people like that in our hobby. I apologize for them, but there's a lot of insecure people that want to rip on people different than they are in this game. |
| Bud Green09-15-05, 01:33 PM | Oh come on now. "i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs "? He's basically declaring "I'm a big sweaty jock." He's probably looking to "pick up some shorty geeks" or something equally mindless. Great, just what this board, and D&D in general, needs. People to drive off new players with ignorant insults. Because god forbid anyone who plays sports be welcomed here. Yeesh. What a jerk. |
| TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe09-15-05, 02:21 PM | Bud, I'm glad someone sees it my way. |
| Elemental_Master09-15-05, 04:00 PM | Jocks vs. Nerds vs. Jocks who play things that most other jocks think is nerdy. Who are U? |
| Tyler Do'Urden09-15-05, 05:09 PM | Yeesh. What a jerk. Well, I tried to reply to your PM, but your inbox is full. 1) Why do you care? Whether he games or not has no effect on you. He won't be in your group and you won't see a cut of the profits from any books he buys. 2) This thread is almost a month old. Get over it. 3) My username is a Fight Club pun. It's a good movie; you should rent it. |
| Molitor09-15-05, 10:24 PM | AAAAHHhhhhh Mayhem........... Fight Club rocks! |
| Shaken, not Stunned09-15-05, 10:36 PM | Why is it everyone on the board went from 34 year olds with literally (and I mean that) genius I.Q.s to eight year olds with social problems in about three and a half seconds there? And why didn't anyone say anything about the SRD (incidentally that is linked in my sig. Click the smile). BTW, sports are good. I like sports. I like wrestling and fencing, archery, and paintball. I like ping-pong, and I was the captain of my school's soccer team before I moved out of state. So what is the big deal with "jocks" (something about as real as "nerds" in the year 2005). Hell, everyone is basically just a student, and anyone you are going to run into is a well educated, open minded individual (accepting Tyler) thanks to a wonderful array of satellites and telephones, and this wierd thing calld the "inter-web" or something like that. Oh, and speaking purely from second hand understanding, Fight Club was a good book made into a decent movie. I think people need to keep the order of production in mind. My general rule is wait for a movie, then read the book. Skip the movie. |
| Molitor09-16-05, 01:06 AM | I'm just trying to have fun. I personally don't mean any offense to anyone on this site. BUT, I also won't baby people or even stick up for them. That's their responsibility. If the OP can't take some gentle ribbing from other posters, that's his/her problem. Some people blow it out of proportion. |
| Phrennzy09-16-05, 10:01 AM | Oh, and speaking purely from second hand understanding, Fight Club was a good book made into a decent movie. I think people need to keep the order of production in mind. My general rule is wait for a movie, then read the book. Skip the movie. Because I can't watch Brad Pitt while reading the book. |
| BeyondFated09-16-05, 10:09 AM | But I really can bench press my truck. My biceps scare me they're so big. Woopty-doo. I can bench press a hotwheels semi! With my pinky! In December! Top that. |
| High Octane09-16-05, 10:24 AM | Woopty-doo. I can bench press a hotwheels semi! With my pinky! In December! Top that. Yeah well I once moved an X-Box a whole INCH! Only had 4 other people helping me! |
| BeyondFated09-16-05, 01:17 PM | Yeah well I once moved an X-Box a whole INCH! Only had 4 other people helping me! Unless all five of your names started with 'H' and ended with 'ercules', then you are all dirty, filthy liars! Hey everyone, this guys a phony! A big, fat, phony! Phony, phony, phony! |
| TheErsatzFacsimileOfMe09-16-05, 02:27 PM | Hooray for maturity! |
| Dippiey09-16-05, 04:38 PM | I am 13, 5'10 and weigh 160 pounds, and I hate sports (not joks. they're cool) I can move my xbox 2 inches. I can put a dent in a semi. I am the most loved loser in my school. Now Tyler, chew me out for saying something about myself, and I'll spit on you. Through the computer. I've done it before. That is about the funnest post I've ever written.- |
| rbrt_Spade09-16-05, 04:39 PM | i hope so ;) |

Those books are awesome ;) , but I didn't know they made them into movies... I've gotta check 'em out! |
| Tyler Do'Urden09-16-05, 11:16 PM | I am 13, 5'10 and weigh 160 pounds, and I hate sports (not joks. they're cool) I can move my xbox 2 inches. I can put a dent in a semi. I am the most loved loser in my school. Now Tyler, chew me out for saying something about myself, and I'll spit on you. Through the computer. I've done it before. You. Um... how dare you, uh... You know what, screw it. I really don't care. I wasn't ripping into the guy because he posted unnecessary and irrelevant personal information (although it was pretty dumb). I was ripping into him because that act signified to me that he did not belong here. Flip the coin. If you walked into a locker room and tried to roll initiative, you'd get your [donkey] kicked. |
| Shaken, not Stunned09-16-05, 11:50 PM | Having done that, I can safely say that wouldn't happen. In fact, I got a couple of palyers that way, but that is beside the point. "I made fun of him because he didn't belong" is the worst excuse for rude behavior I have ever heard, And that includes my excuses, so I am really sayin' somethin' there. I'm really not sure what world some of you guys live in, but I highly recommend you move to the suburbs. Apparently people are a whole more open-minded out here. Either that or your problems have nothing to do with your hobbies. |
| Tyler Do'Urden09-16-05, 11:54 PM | "I made fun of him because he didn't belong" is the worst excuse for rude behavior I have ever heard, And that includes my excuses, so I am really sayin' somethin' there. Who said I needed to be excused? I was just explaining my motivation. |
| Shaken, not Stunned09-17-05, 12:07 AM | The fact that you don't find that disgusting is a little depressing. "This person is different from me. Therefore, I will verbally harass them until they go away." That is a terrible, terrible way to go through life which will almost invariably lead to ignorance, and probobly to a depressingly slow social life. I can only hope that you are very young and will go through a radical change in outlook sometime soon. You miss out on a lot of cool people when you walk around looking at things the way you do. |
| gamerd0rk09-17-05, 02:23 AM | Oh come on now. "i currently play football and basketball and im 6'2 220 lbs "? He's basically declaring "I'm a big sweaty jock." He's probably looking to "pick up some shorty geeks" or something equally mindless. your right, I smell an enemy |

| Dippiey09-17-05, 10:00 AM | :w00t: Hazaah!!! :w00t: Thank'ya Thank'ya High octane, that last one was a burn. Get it? burn? Ball of fire? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha |
