| brock samson04-03-06, 06:04 PM | I am about to start up a 1-PC/1-DM campaign. The campaign takes place around the "border" of what what is modeled after the US and Mexico. Long story short, it has to do with corruption and drugs, but in a midieval/fantasy setting. Anyway, based on the prologues for the campaign he sent me, I am going to be infultrating a corrupt guard force from the inside. We get to start off at 2nd level (it's tough out there for a solo adventurer), so I am planning on playing the rare thief/cleric dual class. The twist is that I am not going to reveal my "clericness" to anyone in the guard force. Everyone will see me as a numble rogue, so I can only use my magic when along or in front of a select group of people, and also have to worship at the shrines on the sly. My question: has anyone ever done this before? Any tips on how to play this character well? Am I a complete idiot for doing this? |

Me, with every single roguelike character in front of people who would not appreciate people renowned for burglaring, stealing and embezzling... Hiding the cleric class might be a bit tougher, since your deity will probably require you to pray at set times - in many cases it might even require you to be honest, which would be a bad start for your career. |
| mike_beavers04-03-06, 06:40 PM | it seems to me that a rogue could worship a diety of some sort without that much problem. Gangsters going to church on sundays and that sort of thing. Mostly depends on which diety he is a cleric of and how he explains it to any npcs |
| InterSilva04-03-06, 06:57 PM | *Ahem* Olidammra(sp)? |
| OneSidedDice04-03-06, 08:29 PM | I think it's worth pointing out that clerics don't have a monopoly on prayer. If someone prays to his god every sunrise or whatever, he could be a cleric, but he could also be an especially devout non-clerical character. It's not like shrines or temples dedicated to a god are a "priests only" club. |
| shadowfox62804-03-06, 09:02 PM | What a lot of people don't know is that you don't have to worship a diety. You can be a Cleric of a cause. I assume that you pick a couple of domains for yourself, and you're fine. So, Trickery and something else would be nice. Otherwise, I have nothing, other than try Olidammara. |
| Kyuketsukiouji04-03-06, 09:16 PM | OneSidedDice has the right of it. It's perfectly acceptable and should not be suspicious at all for a character of any class to worship or more dieites on a regular basis. As long as you don't yell "St-Cuthbert club ye criminals" at the top of your lungs every morning, you're safe. |
| Feor04-04-06, 01:27 AM | I somehow think a Cleric of St. Cuthbert would not exactly be anxious to multiclass into rogue. :P But they're right, worship openly, heck, it might even give you some extra trust among the guards if they think you're a pious man, especially if you worship at the Temple of Olidramma or some other diety who would not neccissarily frown on smuggling. |
| CryoSilver04-04-06, 05:39 PM | Shadowbane Inquisitor? Anyways, in a game I played a while ago, my char was a dwarven rogue on the lam from his home clan for poisoning his brother. However, to the rest of the party, he was the stout warrior who worked well in teams (sneak attack on the flank), and had left home to seek an artifact for his clan. |
