how often should i expect to beable to hide/move silent in a dungeon crael? I have hide of 20, move silent of 16. I am just looking to have reasonable expectations. i am lvl 4.
thanks

Lvl 4 Rogue (I'm guessing here) and has a Move Silently of 16, Move Silently of 20?

Let's see: Dex 18 +4, Skills maxed, +7, Racial +2, maybe a Synergy +2 = 15

I can, barely, see 16 and that's really pushing it.

How often? Well, in a Mounty Hall campaign you're running in, does it really matter?

whisper gnome gets +8 to hide and +4 to move silent( 5 from abilities, 7 from ranks +20). I just have never played this type before... and we have a newer DM.

Okay, so you've got a maxed out Whisper Gnome rogue with a Hide modifier of +20. Do remember that you can't hide if they can see you, and there's no hiding in shadows with creatures that have darkvision. That means you have to find cover if you want to hide. If you can't put something between you and a spotter with darkvision, your Hide checks won't work.

To answer you question, you can hide as often as you like...provided you have either cover or concelment available. You should probably be working as the group scout in a dungeon crawl, looking for traps or spotting enemies before the group gets to them.

There are minuses to Move Silently at speeds higher than 1/2 move.

"Hiding in Shadows" while moving, is a non-starter.
