Hi
Is there a way to cool your body down so that you cant be seen using infravision??

We are after a character that is using infravsion to see invisiable people. I want to hide my character so that I can at least get one good hit in (should be enough to kill the NPC).

Thanks
Brett

Your best bet is found through transmutations. Turn into something like a lizard folk, they have the reptilian subtype and as such are most likley cold blooded. Since they're cold blooded you would give off no body heat which infravision could detect. The same works for turning into a construct or undead. Since infravision can also most likely read cold covering yourself in ice would most likely do nothing as you would show up as a cold spot.

This is a Forgotten Realms Item but it renders you invisible to dark vision and dark vision only. It is a ring called "Darkhidden" and can be located in MoF.

I use it, and take full advantage of it's ability.

Does the game even use infravision anymore? There are several vision types that bypass invisibility like blindsight and tremorsense. Unless this is some house rule/DM special thing.

My suggestions: fight him near a volcano, set fire to nearby houses so that his infravision is spoiled, throw heat metal on his weapon so that the light from it puts him off, summon a fire elemental and hide behind it, use flaming sphere to shield yourself from detection, set him on fire, throw down a lot of oil and set it on fire (make sure you have some resistance).

The basic idea is to have another heat source that overwhelms your weaker source. You could also use polymorph to turn into an earth elemental, see how smart he is when you grab him straight from below the ground.

v3.5 does not use Infravision anymore. You must be playing an old edition.

It has since changed to low-light vision to overcome the inconsistencies that infravision (mentioned above) seems to incur.

Note: f.y.i. Cold blooded animals still give off head different from the surrounding environmental temperature. Cold blooded animals are only slightly different but they are NOT equal in temperature.

What you need to change into is a construct or an inanimate object or an undead that has NO Metabolism. These would be the same temperature as the surrounding air.

3.5 doesnt use infravision.

besides, cold-blooded creatures radiate heat just like any other creature - being cold-blooded does not mean that your body doesnt radiate heat, it means you need an external source to heat your body...

No, being cold blooded means that your body lacks a metabolism which is built to keep a steady temperature. They still give off heat due to muscular activities, digestion, and the like but the amount they give off is fairly small. Also their body would not appear as a single solid unit like a warm blooded animals does which at the very least should grant concealment.

Invisisbility covers infravision in 2nd edition, check the combat and tactics book, its also mentioned in the dmg I just can't remember where. As to what you can do when you don't have invisisbility or any other magical means of concealing yourself, use mud also plate armor is almost the exact same temperature as the surrounding environment so if your completly covered in plate.....well you should be able to convince your dm that it hides you. :D

Unless your surroundings are also at the same temperature as your body, then you're stunningly wrong... You still give off the heat signature, it would not be hidden by your plate armor.

Unless the armor's chilled and you just put the stuff on... :P

Heh heh just realized the gapping hole in that myself. So ill repair some of the damage.
when your surroundings are significantly cold enough the plate is very close to the temperature of the surrounding area. :D

On a sort of related side note:

I have an acquaintance who is quite paranoid about our gov't tracking him in the desert. He's decided that the way to avoid the infrared tracking systems used today is to dress himself up in a wetsuit. "The rubber will keep my heat signature from being seen"

Now it seems to me that this fellow has never actually worn a wetsuit, or he'd be aware that his bodyheat is going to build up rapidly and he'd glow like a campfire under infrared surveillance.

Just goes to show that even relatively smart people can be incredibly misinformed at times.

Depends on how completely he covers himself. If he uses a full heat-tight suit with no openings, he won't show up on infrared - he'll just overheat and die.

That's just wishful thinking. :D

Seriously, do it and see what your DM says about it, I'm sure it will lead to some funny argumentation. :)

Cold-blooded creatures give off heat. The only things that don't give off heat are things that are at absolute zero (0 K, -273 degrees celsius, or -459 degrees fahrenheit). And chances are, even a cold-blooded creature would not be giving off the exact same amount of heat as its surroundings.

The drow of Menzoberannazen (SP?) in Forgotten Realms have what is called a Piwaffi, (SP?) a cloak that hides all traces of heat signature while hiding. Since all drow "use to have" infravision and levitation at will. (2nd edition) Now they are magic items that the nobels, rulers, or house guards have.
