| Ominix09-04-06, 05:28 PM | My friends and I are still getting use to the rules about monster classes and I was wondering if you got extra hit points for being a monster class with level adjustment. For example if we start a new campaign with new characters with a starting level of 5 and I decided to start as be a half-celestial (with a la of 4) paladin (lv1) would I only have 1d10 hit points or would I have more... other wise I don't think it would be very even... Also does the exp require to get to the next level dependent of ecl and/or character level... using the example above would it take 1000 exp to get to the next level or 15000 (edit) Is there any mounts for large charaters that they don't have to go into medium or heavy load? (edit) |

You get the 1d10. Of course, I believe it's now a book rule that you start with max hp for your first level... And it's not very even NOW, but it'll start to balance out once you hit about level 5 and they're level 7. By then you could be the most powerful one in the group. They'll just have to protect you until you hit about lvl 3... |

| dbrouill09-04-06, 10:19 PM | Your character would need 15,000 XP to reach the next level. You are, for all intents and purposes, a 5th level character (one level of paladin with four "levels" from your template). |

I thought the lvl adjustment took care of that, so he would only need the 1000... Can you please tell me what book the max hit dice rule is on andwhat chapter if possible. Thanks by the way. PHB page 23. Chapter 2. It's under the "Hit Dice" section of Class descriptions. |
| Krompt09-05-06, 12:36 AM | your level adjustment is a +4 and you have 1 level in paladin, making your ECL (Effective Character level) that of a 5th level character (so your treated as a 5th level character) and thus would need the total exp of a 5th level character to reach level 6..15,000 xp |

You also start with the wealth of a 5th level character, and you gain xp as a 5th level character. You're not trying to go from 0 to 15,000 with a club, leather armor, and lots of prayer. :P |
| Ominix09-05-06, 01:19 PM | new question.... is there any mounts for large charaters that don't have to go into heavy load when the charater just sits on it without equipment. (Note adding this to first post) |
| Krompt09-05-06, 06:21 PM | Your question is oddly worded..are you asking if there is some way a Large Sized Creature could carry someone else on it? or Carry its Equipment on it? and yes Shaggy your right, you start with 10,000 xp and 9,000 Gp, and you need 5000 exp to get to level 6 |

He's asking about a mount for a Large Sized Creature. Answer: Use an elephant. |

That makes a lot more sense... |
| Krompt09-06-06, 04:18 AM | ohh, ok I reread what he had said I didnt understand it completely, he was asking for a mount for a large sized creature, that has no name, that is strong enough to hold said Large Sized Creature up and not be in the Heavy Load Limit while said Nameless Large Sized Creature is just sitting without his equipment? |

| starfire31109-06-06, 11:32 AM | basicly what I ment was is there a mount meant for large size characters any huge trainable 4 lagged critter should do the trick. as someone already mentioned, an elephant should work light load of 3192lbs, medium 6384lbs, heavy 9600lbs |
| Brotha_T09-06-06, 12:32 PM | Generally speaking, when you are creating a PC from a monster, there are two ways in which it will be handled: 1.) The monster is a template that you add to a base-race (for instance, half-celestial, half-fiend, half-dragon). 2.) The monster is the base race (for instance troll, gnoll, minotaur, etc.) Your situation is #1 from above. You do not get any additional HD because the template increases your power to an effective character level (ECL) of 5 (palladin lvl1 + lvl adjustment 4). It might sound weak, but it's balanced when you account for all the bonuses. I played in a party with a half-celestial once, and he was a tank. In situation #2 above, the monster is the base race instead of human, elf, etc. In the description of monsters that can be played as races, there is a section labeled "_____ as characters" under which there will be a bullet that includes racial HD. The racial HD will be added to your HD associated with your class level. So for instance, if you were playing a gnoll paladin with an ECL of 5, you would have 4 levels in palladin because gnolls have lvl adjustment 1. Using a monster as a base race is treated like multi-classing in that the racial HD govern BAB, skills, feats, and XP in addition to any special qualities associated with the race. So, you could say that your palladin has 1 level in gnoll and 4 levels in palladin. |

(Humanoid 2 + LA 1 + Paladin 2 = ECL 5.) |
