I cant stand playing for this dm...hes so bad...

Slightly interesting story, but i have so many problems with him...are these legitimate things to get agitated with?

1) he claims that all of his stuff is original...but the description of every room is robbed verbatim from some other quest that i have read before...and he knows i read it, and still tells me to my face that its original...

2) its a decent story otherwise...but we have no say in whats going on..its basically like, no matter what happens everything is going to happen the same exact way..and we have nothing to do with whats going on, its a war between nps and were just crappy soldiers who do nothing important what-so-ever.

3) he throws epic level npc's in EVERYWHERE! wherever he doesnt want us to do something he says that the npc is epic level, so we really cant to do anything at all (heaven forbid we speak out of line to anyone in his world)

4) he cant take jokes. heres the situation. Dying king is being surrounded by 12 guys. i have been ordered to heal him (im a cleric). so i start healing him, but my stuff isnt working (im only 4th level). So they all start looking at me like im absolutely crazy. im like what...this is what i was ordered to do. and they respond, what are you..I said "im a healer". theyre like...what are you doing...i say"uhh trying to heal him," they continue to berate me, so im just like...what is your problem? your king is sick, im trying to help him, i dont see you guys trying to do anything" this is where things start to bug me...

the dm informs me...all 12 of them are epic level clerics...what?!?!
then one of them asks me to go and find this guy who might know the cure to the disease...this is my response...

"...no. are you kidding me? i just spend an entire days healing trying to heal this guy, and your all much more achieved than i am, you can heal him yourself. ever hear of remove disease? remove curse, dispel magic, miracle..there are a bunch of things you can do regardless of whether or not this is a curse, a disease, poison...what do you want me to do? and now you want me to leave, right now...with no spells left...to go to some town and find some guy...but...you cant tell me where this guy is? you cant just teleport me there or something? you cant give me a map? you cant give me some epic equipment to ensure my return? nothing...you wont do anything for me?

do you guys even think? you have a town out there busting their asses day in and day out, sacrificing their lives to fight your enemies...enemies that if you would grow a pair and fight off yourself you could destroy in a day. (mostly goblins and the such)

sensing the tension this is where i tried to make a joke to lighten things up...

"here lets just take a look at your spell lists and ill teach you guys how to act more affectively...lets start at level 9. Ah true ressurection, have you considered just letting the king die, and then ressurrecting him?" lol everyone at the table dies laughing...it was hysterical...regardless i got thrown in a dungeon.

i roleplayed with the dm for about an hour and a half after that...trying to get out of the dungeon...and then he informs me that no matter what i do my character is being executed for trying to kill the king...what?! 1)when did i try and kill the king 2) why are they killing me? theyre lawful good epic clerics of the same god (pelor) as i am...wouldnt that call for an alignment change lol 3) the game is constantly like that "no matter what you do, this is whats happening"

Overall...i just feel so helpless in this game. after my group spent an additional hour trying to get me out of the jail i was executed. and i informed him that i wouldnt be making a new character bc i dont have the time to waste with "no matter what i do" situations.

Am i being unreasonable...bc these seem like pretty concrete reasons to be unsatisfied.

I would say you have some legitimate reasons there. When a DM forces the PC's to do a certain thing just to get his game to go the way he planned is never a good thing. I am sure all the DM's on this board know that the PC's will always do something you didn't expect. He can't just start up 'god-mode' to stop you from roleplaying or players won't want to play.

Have you tried talking to him about it, explain it to him. Forced gameplay is like reading a fantasy novel, there is one way to go and no other. Roleplaying opens up endless options. Take the example of you in the dungeon, there are a hundred different ways your party members could probably have gotten you out of there. Hopefully your can convice him to stop that or the game won't get very far.

One thing also, is he a new DM? I know I did the forced gameplay for a while when I first started. He may just need experience. Of course if he won't listen that wont matter.

Er.. your DM wouldn't happen to be, say, your 4 year old little brother or something, is he? Anyway, I have the sure-fire solution to your problem:

Step 1. Continue to roleplay your character for the sake of professionalism. Do so until he gets executed, since this is preordained.

Step 2. Do not make a new character, and instead thank the DM and fellow players for the good time [if you can call it that with a straight face]. Try to avoid using sentences like "Sorry, but I'd rather have a sulfuric acid enema than play in your unoriginal, life-sucking, crap-fest of a game."

Step 3. Find a BETTER DM and play in HIS/HER game! Or run your own, that works too.

Step 4. Learn to recognize crap-ass DMs like that before you even start.

Step 5 [optional]. Figure out what the heck it was that made the DM so dang ticked off at you. Perhaps stop dating his sister, girlfriend, mother and/or pet.. something like that.

LOL, that last part may be a little rough :)
of course if I had epic lvl npc's running all over the place my players would probably hurt me.

Make a new character, have him be evil, and be a true necromancer. then walk up to a villager, a random, nobody, and try to kill him, and see if hes a epic level villager.

if he is, leave the game and never come back, I might suggest throwing a few curse words in there to spice it up. and try to take as many other players with you, and start your own D&D game.

if the villager isnt epic, kill him and animate dead, thus createing your first minion.

P.S. dont kill the villager in the middle of town, that will get you killed. bring him into an alley, or out into the wilderness to show him something, or something like that.

There is a great resource available which can teach DM's alot about how to work with a group of people, and, in a general sense, how people will respond to different things. The best part is, you won't need to spend any money to get this resource. He already has a DMG. Perhaps you should ask if he has read it, other than the item guide. Sheesh.

To be overly generous there is a 99.6% chance that there will be at least one epic level commoner in a metropolis.

To be fair this DM sucks from your description. There should only be a handful of epic level NPCs in the world which you should be able to name as a DM. There will be a lot of epic level extra planar creatures (solars for instance) but even these should not be common or seen on the material unless something big is up. Otherwise you have to completely rework the world and that is too much work for most DMs. Now if they are willing to do so then it is their right, but a half hearted attempt is just plain annoying. Your speech was wonderful, I am impressed.

I sense a flame war is going to erupt here since one of the guests is a player and one is a DM. Please trustme when I say that the best course of action is for you two to sit down and discuss this.

I'm talking as the voice of experience. Last night, after he insisted that we play 3.0, I had to (a) teach my DM that haste allows two spells per round in 3.0, (b) when a concetration check needs to be performed after taking damage, (c) that it helps to have a least part of the adventure laid out prior to us attending (at least the monsters), and (d) I'm going to have to get across to him that playing monster aka Everquest and have them alway attack the healer after healing is not very beneficial to the rest of the party, and especially his NPC fighter. Basically, I'm not going to have my cleric perform any healing until combat is complete. (After he goes through NPC fighters like red-shirted security guards on Star Trek - and having to make each character - he's going to get the hint)

The main thing is that the first four items I had a discussion with the DM after our gaming session and explained that things have to change. If we have to change as players, we'll be more than happy to as well. We were able to communicate what needed to be done and things should be back to normal.

(Now for the Everquest monster reations, he'll get the hint ... ;) )
