How can a ranger resupply his own arrows? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Playing an archer ranger, I'm expecting to tear through my supply of arrows fairly quickly. If I don't encounter any enemies using their own arrows, I might not be able to restock. I'll be adventuring into the Underdark, so I won't have much access to wood, I gather.

SO...

* How could a ranger resupply his own arrows?
* Is there a summon wood-type spell that I or someone else in the party could use?
* If I happen upon any kind of wood (table, crate, etc.), what kind of skill check would it take to craft some arrows out of it?

Any suggestions would be helpful!

You have a couple of possible helping factors.

-First off, an arrow that misses has only a 50% chance of becoming unusable after being fired, so on average a good portion of the arrows you fire in a given encounter can carry over to future encounters (not including arrows that are obviously lost i.e. shot off a crevace, etc). Granted this doesn't replace all your ammunition, but it will prolong your supply.

-Of those arrows that are 'lost' by breaking: any spellcaster except for Paladins and Rangers can cast Mending as a 0-Level spell. So assuming you have a spellcaster in the group this extends your supply even farther.

-Sorcerors and Wizards recieve Minor Creation as a 4th-level spell. Depending on your group's level a Wizard can crank out 7-cubic feet of arrows assuming he can hit the Craft:Bowmaking DC (not specifically stated but approx 5-10).

-Alternatively you can make your own arrows at the same DC from any appropriate material such as wooden furnature or even stone.

Thank you. That gives me some options I haven't thought of!

Id advise picking up a Quiver of Ehlonna, that thing can carrie alot of arrows.
Also, if its in your budget, pick up a small bag of holding, and store as many extra arrows in that as you can, they dont have to be complete arrows, just what you need to make them, like the wood, the heads (which you can also take from expended arrows, those things are steel and generaly dont break even when hitting a stone wall), feathers, and all the string that you can get ahold of.
If thats not possable, then id advise breaking down and comeing under encumberance with about 10 quivers of arrows, (thats about 200 arrows total) and scavange everyone that you can until you can get back to a town or to a place that you can restock.
Also, what the other guys said are good suggestions as well. Check all those fired arrows!
And if it comes down to it, Bone arrows, with fired heads will work in a pinch, but dont expect them to be as good, and they will almost always break when fired (expect about a 75% chance of breakage) but there is about 8 bones on the human body that will serve as a arrow shaft. grusome, and unsightly, but works when you have nothing but a bow and no more arrows.

My characters are starting at 8th level, so I used my starting gold to buy a Quiver of Ehlonna. Already covered :)

I also plan to have 200-300 bound up arrows in our loot sack so I can resupply myself.

I just needed some options to restock my supply in case I run out, since I'll be using 3 arrows/round with Rapid fire, 2/round with a single Manyshot, or 4/round with Rapid Fire/Haste.

Well, time to be creative and create a 'Create Arrow' spell for your ranger.

Rangers got spells, so this could be done if you have a good DM that accept researched spells.

Something like... (hey, don't take that spell for granted, it's only an exemple I made.)

Arrow Creation
Conjuration (Creation)

Level: Rgr 1
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 10 minute
Range: 0 ft.
Effect: 10 Arrows
Duration: 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

Caster must succeed it's craft arrow check.

Material Component: A non-magical arrow.

Make a survival check to gather materials, and a craft check to carve them into arrows - not that an 8th level character would ever use such a simple, hands-on process though

Try the Book of Vile Darkness. An item called the Quiver of Lies, you strap it to your wrist, and tell a lie. Then an arrow or bolt appears in your hand. It's round about 12,000gp, I believe, so maybe a little more than an 8th level character can afford.

There is also a quiver from FR that Cattie Brie used in the Drizzt books (sorry to bring that up, but thought it'd help:P). There is an article about it somewhere in the Wizards site. Basically it's a bow that automatically summons an arrow when nocked. It's far more efficient than the quiver. I'm not sure if it's only one a round, but regardless, I think you benefit from buying it. Also with the more money you spend you can have the arrows be magical (+X), admantine, cold iron, good, etc. For your level though I'd just stick with maybe the +1 arrows;)

Nevermind, I found it for you.

Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.

Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.

Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.

Oh wow, it's a bit pricier than I thought...well, if you have that much money go for it...I can't recall how much gold you get at your level though:(
Hope that helps, peace.

Take Craft (bowmaking) to make some arrows. Use bones from nasties you kill instead of wood. The Native Americans and Inuits (sp?) didn't always use wood and bone was a nice substitute. At a very high DC, I (as DM) would allow a PC to make them out of lightweight metal (specially designed for arrow usage). Brainstorm with your DM.

Take Craft (bowmaking) to make some arrows. According to the Living Greyhawk Campaign Handbook you can automatically restock 20 non-masterwork arrows with at least 4 ranks

Archer's perfect magic item... there's nothing else you'll ever need. Well, except maybe a Bow.

BTW, what book is that in? Want to show the DM so I can have it on a Fighter (NOT ranger) that I'm making.

It's not in any published book. It's just from an article on the wizard's website. I can't remember the website (didn't bookmark it:(), but you can find it by going to the Forgotten Realms.......meh, I'll just find it again:P

There you go, good luck with getting your DM to approve it. I think it's reasonably priced for what it does.

Sharpen some wooden branches, or a piece of bone for low-level. Probably a craft-bowmaking or survial check. The arrows don't have fletching etc, so a few negatives to damage or accuracy would be in order.
