| King_of_the_squirrels01-23-05, 10:13 PM | let me start by telling you his idea, he wants each of us to make up some super powerful weapons (not sure if you can comprehend, our 1st dungeon, at level one one fighter got 2 vorpal falchions, but i can't remeber ALL the other abilities it had) anyway, he lets us get away with an obscene amount of things, my wizard has about 33 intelligence without any magic and killed acouple ravgers in melee combat, he is at 13th level, but has a caster level of about 23, oh yea he has beaten a dragon in chess before and can automaticly perform incantations with a 38 dc (automaticly!) :plotting: so his dungeons are built specifically for one person, there is only one item and it is for that one person. that doesn't really make anyone want to go in except for the person who gets the item, but one of the wierdest things about his dungeons is that he expects us to get through them. they are like the same dungeon over and over agian except some of the taps are switched. everything is also trapped and as a wizard this is the hardest part for me. i thinks he expects us to go through it flawlessly. he bases it on our backround (which he never made us make, our characters don't even have descriptions, i don't know what anyone looks like.) he gives very vague clues (we were traped in a room filling with water, and his charicter touched the that we just came from and it started to ripple, i telekineticly threw the halfling rouge [to whom i've done really mean things to later] against the wall and nothing happened, so then every one just got confused stood there about to drown, so the he just walked through the wall and we followed (i geuss you have to willingly pass through the illusion or something) :uh-huh: his character is a monk who AUTOMATICLY knows everything but never tells us anything because he asumes we know (because it has to do with pur backrounds, which he doesn't even know). his character can also grow prismatic dragon skin and perform any spell because of his tattooed monk levels, and he kills every thing for us, but he's not the most powerful of us, i am, because knowledge is power right. thats why he keeps me on a leash, because he knows that i don't like his character and can kill him (in less than 2 turns) :plotting: his big idea is that we destroy a massive army, but last game we fought some type of emperor wyrm as 11th level characters, which might i add he beat in 2 rounds he really makes us feel useless :surrender are there any things i can suggest so that he'll tone it down a bit, it feels really epic and i've already asked him to let me teach him to dm better. |
| psionichamster01-23-05, 11:17 PM | are there any things i can suggest so that he'll tone it down a bit, it feels really epic and i've already asked him to let me teach him to dm better. well, you could not use the high-powered char's you have... try dming yourself, for a change...(suggest it as a break for him, have some pre-gens like monster PC's or something you don't usually play...im sure he'll bite) if you do it better than he, it could be that he'd be willing to play in your game um... beyond the fact that you are helping this game continue by carrying on with your char, there aint a whole lot we can do.. good luck! the hamster |
| Thonili_Moonbringer01-24-05, 01:20 AM | I agree. Ask him if you can DM in between adventures, and have everybody start from level 1. Then use regular treasure rules and encounter levels when you design your adventure, and hopefully everybody will catch on to how much more dynamic the game is when things are balanced. Then either your buddy will catch on and DM better, or step aside and let you do it. You were right, I thought my character was overpowered until I saw you guys  |
| Wabash01-24-05, 02:56 AM | Maybe you guys should try Paranoia, its a game that rewards players for plotting against and/or killing their fellow teammates. http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/rpg/series.php?qsSeries=19 I started a D&D group, but now this is all we play. Paranoia is pretty fun, The Computer says so. Anyone who disagrees is a filthy, commie traitor. Here's a short excerpt from our last game. DM: Mass-R is consumed in the blast and you are knocked off your feet. The forklift thrown in the explosion is poised to land on top of you. P1: Darwin-R attempts to roll out of the way. *d20 roll* (success) DM: Darwin-R manages to avoid being crushed under the falling heavy machinery. From your position on the floor you find a small metal box with blinking red lights. What do you do? P1: I try to identify the box. *d20 roll* (catastrophic failure) DM: This is exactly the item you were sent to locate. P1: I stuff the box under my shirt and run for the door. DM: Right, the BOMB you have hugged against your chest detonates. The seven other charges that were masterfully hidden by Mass-R also detonate utterly demolishing the warehouse that your team was sent to protect. Who has the experimental Plasma Generator? P2: Uh, I think that was still on my corpse back in the warehouse office. DM: Ok, The falling rubble cracks the energy field containment unit and the resulting explosion removes Sector ZTG from the Alpha Complex map. Your next clones are called to report to debriefing and summarary termination. Serve The Computer, The Computer is your friend. |
| King_of_the_squirrels01-24-05, 04:57 PM | thanks, those are really good ideas, i've asked him to let me dm the traveling part of the game and he said i could, but then he started dming that also, so i got mad and told him i could just teleport us there  i'm kinda oblligatd to be so powerful, otherwise i'd be long dead, i don't really feel that powerful though, i feel like an animal. he doesn't let me me use damaging spells ('m an evoker) because it's "dissrespectful" to the ancestral tombs we've been going through, frankly though, thats putting me in character because my character has really bad anger issues and can't wait to take a huge chunk out of the enemy army. :waits: i actually would rather take a huge chunk out of my party though :schemes: , nobody acts in character though ( he rewards us for acting foolishly though) that paranoia thing is starting to sound pretty good. all of the other times we've played mostly everybody plays the same character over agian and maybe if i kill them off they would be forced to make new (and supervised by me) characters :plotting: |
| e-z0r01-24-05, 05:32 PM | You know.. I'm really really grateful to the universe that I'm far away from your gaming group. Especially your DM. That sounds horrible. I'm not looking to offend, but still. Horrible, I tell you! |
| HomebrewedMonster01-25-05, 05:29 AM | Your DM is an ameuter and apparently has embrased the art of monty haul campaigns. P.S. - you sound more experienced, you should DM. Even if your not comfortable with the rules. You'd still probably be better. |
| Aeromus01-25-05, 05:55 AM | This is why Dungeons and Dragons and drugs aren't good together. |
| Nytmare01-25-05, 10:12 AM | I'm going to throw my vote in on the "Run a game and show him the other way things could be done." I think that most gamers who are working their way through the concept fresh go through a stage like this. Even if you're not running, you can try to squeeze more role-playing out of the others. Corner them, refuse to come out of character, even roleplay the crunchy bits. Eventually you'll be able to infect them. |
| Phrennzy01-25-05, 10:59 AM | I would take those two vorpal falchions and tie them end to end and then I'd be cool, swingin them around and doin all kinds of damage, just like Darth Maul, but better because I wouldn't get chopped in half, I would have chopped Obi Wans head clean off, his legs too. I want your DM to be MY DM! |
| Kaboth01-25-05, 11:35 AM | High powered campaigns can be fun at first, but they get so blaise' in time. By the time you characters get up to the real levels what is the Dm going to do to grab the partys oh and ah's? Nothing... Actually magic item scarce campaigns are actually more fun to me than monty haul campaigns. Had one campaign were it was this case, jesus we had people jumping all over the place for +1 ring. The only thing I can suggest is either go with it until all of you are bored or start over with a new DM or go to a new gaming group. One other possibility...is use the zap and diety intervention twist... if you (or someone else takes over DM'ing).. but depowering PC's usually ticks them off. |
| RASVIMofIO01-25-05, 11:54 AM | Leave this game. go to a flgs and find a GM who knows the rules. You need a senior GM to teach your GM how to GM. But you are not alone. The people at my FLGS come to me all the time with dungeon horror stories. They do not realize as the syores senior GM I can only control games at Sasquatch Games or at my house. I tell them to run. I tell you to run. |
| Wabash01-25-05, 05:31 PM | I'm tellin' ya Squirrels, go with Paranoia. Troubles role playing? -No problem! No time for convoluted backstories or riddiculous accents when you're busy thinking up schemes to double or even triple cross every other teammate. Overpowered? Underpowered? -Who cares! The PCs are screwed no matter what. Give them some experimental grenades that have bigger blast radiuses than anyone could ever hope to throw them. or give 'em a massive robot controlled tank that takes every oral command literally. "Turn right" makes the tank immediately turn right regardless or other vehicles, walls, chasms, etc. Or if someone panicks and shouts "we're gonna be killed!" have the tank self destruct. Anger Issues? PC rivalry? -Heck, thats the whole point. Instead of having it ruin a D&D game have it make a Paranoia game more enjoyable. Paranoia isn't too hard to DM if you've read the book once or twice and you're comfortable with the setting. Simpy, the DM sends the PCs on a vague/incorrect/impossible mission, give the PCs some obviously conflicting Secret Society sub-missions, and after that the PCs largely dictate the mission untill everyone is dead or they accomplish the mission (yeah, right). |
| Tegarius01-25-05, 11:06 PM | You know this seems like one of psionic hampster's *whap* *dig, dig, dig* scenarios. |
| Lincoln Hills01-27-05, 07:21 PM | You know, this is my third attempt to write a helpful, coherent post to fix your problem. But now I realize that that's just not going to happen. Run fast, run far. |
| Darth Tucan02-02-05, 08:03 PM | Peoples its horrible. King of the squirrels dind't tell you the half of it. Our dm gives us exp for doing dumb things. I was walking through a doorway when a wall fell down, it was solid, one slammed down at the other side too. i didn't know that one wasn't. anyway i couldn't get through the wall so i indimidated (or at least tried) the wall by mooning it and i gained a level! Then Mr. King threw me against the ollusion wall at the other side of the room i bounded off. Then our dm's charater walks through! He says we need balenced charater with the highest ability score within 10 of the lowest, he has a 35 str and a 2 cha! that folks is a double standard. I'm a rouge and i can disable any traps he won't let me disable magical and when i get to a normal trap the timer runs out and it goes off on me. I'm always last in line. I as a halfing have a speed of 20. he as a colossal monk has...something high. then he complains that i'm slow. he does 300 damage on average an attack, then says we're weak. he's level 11. we've tried to kill him but then he uses his dm powers to cheat. Its horrible. |
| murte02-02-05, 08:14 PM | QUite simple, don't do anything next time. Don't go into the dungeon, don't fight the dragon he throws at you, do simply nothing. Sell off your magical gear to buy rounds of ale at the pub. Take vows of non-violence. All that fails, stop playing with him. There is always another game around the corner. |
| Capt. Pixel02-02-05, 10:38 PM | QUite simple, don't do anything next time. Don't go into the dungeon, don't fight the dragon he throws at you, do simply nothing. ..... This is what my players do. I don't think it's belligerence on their part - they just don't know no better. ;) If my campaign requires the party to turn right - they invariably turn left (or up, or strange, or charmed......) I've come to expect nothing less from them. (admittedly, I will use the same tactic if i think it save my PCs butt - or irritate the DM. heheh) |
| Darth Tucan02-03-05, 03:50 PM | We always do nothing, that doesn't work, and as for selling and buying anything, that doesn't work. See we're suposidly behind enemy lines so we would get killed if we try. We're in any army fighting another army, which is fine i guess, but there's never mass amounts of people to slaugher, which we could because we're the equvilant of epic level pcs. Anyway, instead of fighting the army which is what we're there for, we plunder our ansesteral tumbs. Why are our tumbs in enemy territory? And why do we plunder them? Kill the temple guard which is usually a challenge rating 30+ and we are level 11. So we can steal old grandpa's stuff. He makes up his own feats, blood lines, etc. so he's super-powerful, and we can't do a thing because he's dm. When we defeat 1 monster we grow at least one level. we omly interacted with his monk friends (Which I tried to kill because I hated them :D). |
| King_of_the_squirrels02-03-05, 04:33 PM | it's not that i want to totally ignore his ideas, but i need someway to suggest fixing them with him still being able to complete his ideas. i mostly wanted him to see this so that he whould realize that i wasn't crazy when i told him to relax his style, an dto let others opions persaude him more, so feel free to make any comments you want (nothing mean though, but you could tone it down if you absolutly must say it) And if you have any questions you can post them :waits: |
| Bringslite02-03-05, 10:20 PM | Take over the DM spot and show him how it can be. |
| black dragon karameikos02-04-05, 01:14 PM | Apparently your DM has taken the idea of The DM is GOD WAY too far. Although the DM does have the power to make, change, and use any rules he or she sees fit, making them up on the spot without letting the other players know can cause a problem, especially if the ruling works against a player. Any changes to the rules should be made outside of the game, and the new rule should be told to the group before the next game is played. I agree with most of the other posters to this board, you need to take control of the game and show him how it is properly done. One other thing, if you do take over DM'ing, set down the rules that you will be using before hand, that way the playeres know what to expect. Plus it will also show your friend how the game is actually supposed to be DM'd Good luck  |
| Darth Tucan02-04-05, 03:47 PM | You're right he's took the idea dm is god way to far. He's allowing King of the squrrils to dm but he (so convienently has other plans) I hope he's sees the light, i'm really sick of it :banghead:! If you have any suggestions post them please! Maybe we can convice him our piont of veiw isn't crazy. I have an army of my own 58 cha. I think if an onslaught :invasion: doesn't stop him i can make him think he's a squrril :D ! |
