How do I fight a vampire? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have two specific questions about fighting vampires.

First, can a vampire use his gaze attack while in gaseous form?

Second, how handicapped is a resting vampire? We need to get an item from a vampire, and we think it is on his person. If we open his coffin while he is resting, will he be aware of us instantly?

Basically I would say both your questions are up to the DM, but if I were that DM the answers would be like this.

No eyes no gaze. Vampires can't use gaze attacks in gasous form.

Depends. If your managed to bring the vampire to negative hit points before you open its coffin it will lie dormant until it reaches positive hit points. If it's just resting however it will wake as soon as you open the coffin, or perhaps before if you make alot of noice around the coffin (don't bang on the lid)

How should you fight a vampire?

Very carefully :rimshot:

Seriously, if you have a cleric, you should be able to divine it's coffin, go out in daylight, have the cleric cast Cure <insert adjective here> Wounds on the creature, have your tank cut off the head, then stake it.

cut offs its head and or submorse it in running water stakeing it is a one way ticket for it to come back when the dm wants it to. submersing in running water ensure death and cutting of the head ensures death.

Obviously they cannot be outdoors during the daytime. But can they be active indoors during the daytime? Or must they rest during daylight hours? And even if they do rest during the daytime, you guys think that they would be conscious. Hmmm... That will make it tough to get the item.

In my opnion, this is what the use of sages is. You find a
sage who is knowledgable about undead, failing that, you
go to a temple of a good deity, and ask if you can consult
a high level priest about ways to beat a vampire. In this
way you get some answers IN GAME, since the answers of
different players (and your DM) may vary because your
second question isn't really rule-specific. (Depending on
what kind of campaign you're in, if you end up relying on
info from a cleric, a priest of Lothander or Pelor would be
the best, I think.)

(Yes, as long as they dont get hit by sunlight)

Or must they rest during daylight hours?

(Technically, vampires dont *need* sleep, so no)

And even if they do rest during the daytime, you guys think that they would be conscious.

(Unless you make a lot of noise, they'll remain asleep, and sleep is decidedly NOT a conscious state.)

Hmmm... That will make it tough to get the item.

Replies in bold, based on the Buffyverse vampire.

Go in during the day and set up an elaborate series of mirrors to reflect the sunlight even into the very depths of the vampire's lair (ala Tom Cruise in Legend) :)

If you find the vampire's coffin while it's in it, very carefully chain or nail it shut, take it outside, during the day and dunk it in a river. Pretty much whatever happens after that you've got a dead vampire.

Would setting his lair on fire during the day to force him into the sunlight work as a way of killing him or is this wishful thinking!! However this may make getting the item rather difficult if it is not literally on his person!
