Ok I am playing with a very very by the book DM. Now I want to play an Orc because I see it as a fun and challanging Roleplaying chance. Does any one have any suggestions on how I should ask him to let me play one.
thanks for the help

Just ask him, if he's read the DMG asmuch as you imply, he should know the section on converting races off by heart. However, if you mean he might not let you because it's not in the PHB, you'll just have to try t convince him that it will be fun and interesting, and won't ruin anything.

The fact that you want to roleplay him instead of roll-play it is to your advantage. I am one such by-the-book DM, but allow exceptions if I see that a player is going to work and do what he says.

I would tell your DM that you will limit your strength to 18 despite the +4 bonus. This will give you the roleplaying aspect of being big and strong, but will not give the mechanic advantage of being able to push your strength to 22 and get +9 damage on a 2H weapon.

Yeah, have you actually just asked him about it?
Also, don't play him as a pure melee character with absurdly high strength and con and all of that. Try playing a skald (a bard/barbarian) that does big epic stories of his clan, that uses warcries, and things like that. Again, just don't do a "Me orc wit Int 3, me smash things" and you should be okay.

Look at some of the advice above.

The number one way to get a DM to ok anything is to make it more interesting (by the DM's definition) than it is powerful.

Come to the table with an Orc who takes advantage of as many of the DM's favorite story angles as possible. Make sure that at least one or two of them directly hinder the character somehow - but in a way that makes it fun to roleplay through.

DMs not only bend things for interesting characters, they have a habit of ensuring that circumstance doesn't kill those characters off as fast as it does others.

Above all, don't ask for anything to 'balance out' the weakpoints of the Orc. An Orc is a weaker option than a human, and if you ask for the difference to made up it will look to the DM like you're choosing the Orc for it's advantages and not for the roleplaying opportunity - which is a sure way to get turned down.

Quoted for emphasis. My DM is pretty by-the-book, but I got him to let me play a half-dragon because I promised him it wouldn't be just one big min/max fest. If all else fails, Bribe him. I'd say $10 should sway him nicely. ;)

Either that or offer to break his knee-caps...
