| LordInferno11-28-07, 12:13 AM | I need to figure out how to kill 100 vargouilles at level 2 (except myself) who is at level 1. Our party currently consists of an Elven Druid (lvl2), an Aasimar Barbarian (level1), a Kobold Monk/Sorc (lvl1/lvl1), a dwarven Favoured soul (lvl2) , a human wizard (lvl2), and a human sorcerer using draconic feats (lvl2). Any and all sensible help is much appreciated. Our DM seems t be slightly on the insane side, and get his jollies out of killing his PC's. Did I mention he's slightly on the messed up side? Yeah... |
| Krusk11-28-07, 01:04 AM | Dont fight it, is running an option? Enlist the help of high level adventurers and promise them all the loot. DM fiat. the three ways i can see you surviving. |
| CryoSilver11-28-07, 01:09 AM | Can't be done without some serious houseruling and making stuff up. |
| MareltEkiran11-28-07, 01:13 AM | Try to get them into a closed corridor, get a scroll of Cloudkill, give it to the Wizard and pray that he makes his Caster Level check to activate the thing. Wand of Fireballs and cast Expeditious Retreat... Just keep activating and retreating. More expensive but higher chance of success. Seriously, though... without access to higher level spells that are designed to cover areas, there's little you can do. Vargouilles aren't the toughest critters around, but if all of them release their Shriek, there's no way you can make that many saves. At that point, you're toast. |
| Sylphie11-28-07, 01:41 AM | Pray for divine intervention? :P Having failed that. . .Run for the hills! |
| Fireclave11-28-07, 02:27 AM | How do I live? Learn to pick your battles. |
| jradd77711-28-07, 02:30 AM | Maybe... take the detriments and just fight them with your eyes closed or cast obscuring mist or something... because you have to be able to clearly see them for the shriek to work? Then maybe because everyone will be at a disadvantage but they'll be at an even bigger one, you'll be okay? They have low AC, the poison (really low save) will be your biggest worry once you have the concealment from the mist... At least, if you find a way to survive without outside help, you'll have a ridiculous amount of XP. PS - I don't understand how the DM is going to make it fun for everyone while he's rolling 100 attacks etc, but whatever? |
| Phrennzy11-28-07, 02:31 AM | Buy potions of invisibility. Bypass stupidly overpowered encounter. Beat DM senseless. |
| Entropy_Judge11-28-07, 02:56 AM | If they're all in a mass, pray you get 20's and they all get 1's. Avoid any group over 4-5 creatures, and attack any loners you can. Get them separated, take your time. Our DM seems t be slightly on the insane side, and get his jollies out of killing his PC's. Did I mention he's slightly on the messed up side? Yeah... Get a new DM. |
| wizarddog11-28-07, 03:06 AM | A protection from evil would help for a bit. If you have access to spells beyond what you have (via scrolls) you can place silence spells some item for your fighters so they can't be effected by the shriek. (not too close to your spell casters). Te obscuring mist is the best defense and a quick run! |
| Belkar11-28-07, 03:05 PM | You mentioned the sorceror had draconic feats? Does he have the one that lets him sacrifice a spell to get a breath weapon? If so... then get them all bunched up (in a corridor or something), then let him go nuts. 2d6 damage per level of sacrificed spell. Protection from Evil is another great idea - that could save your butts. Find a way to not be hit (or affected by the shriek) - thus Prot. from Ev. And find a way to cause area damage. Your sorceror may be the key if he's got the right draconic feats. |
| LordInferno11-28-07, 07:05 PM | no, he doesn't have that feat, unfortunately... don't see why not |
| Fireclave11-28-07, 09:42 PM | no, he doesn't have that feat, unfortunately... don't see why not Draconic Breath is good, but not great. It's decent if you don't have too many other offensive spell options or if your CL isn't going to get very high, and the ranges of the breath weapons are and ability ot ignore SR are pretty nice, but generally an offensive orriented sorcerer could get much more damage by using an spell of the same level he would have sacrificed for Draconic Breath. In most cases, I'd rather save a precious feat and use Burning Hands for 5d4 damage instead of sacrficing a 1st level slot for 2d6, or Scorching Ray for up to 12d6 with no reflex save instead of 4d6, for Fireball's superior range and 10d6 instead of using a 3rd, 4th, or 5th level slot for 6d6, 8d6, or 10d6 of elemental damage, respectively. Either way, he still wouldn't have enough spell slots to take out an appreciable fraction of the 100 opponents your DM is making you might. One of the offense-oriented reserve feats in the Complete Mage might be more applicable here. Less damage than either Draconic Breath or using a spell, but provided you find some way to protect yourselfs from the vargouilles speacial abilities, the sorcerer could keep up the AoE damage all day long. Though he probably can't qualify for any of them just yet. |
| happy_fuzzy11-28-07, 10:22 PM | Make sure your druid has a riding dog animal companion, buy it barding banded mail and hide behind it while releasing spells on the enemies. Also cast prot from evil on said dog or use share spells, Have your dwarven favored soul pledge your parties allegiance and unswerving devotion to his god and pray the god will save you so he can get personal and possibly eventual high-level servants. See if a merchant will let you take out a loan and buy a lot of alchemists fire/cold/shock, put them in a bag and throw them into the center of the mass of varg. You can also have a subplot where you do crazy yet amusing tasks for the merchant. |
| Wih11-29-07, 12:34 AM | Get an item/scroll/wand etc of Darkness. You can't see the Vargouiles clearly, their special attack won't effect you. As for offense, the only way you're going to be able to get them is either with enlarge person + reach weapon + combat reflexes, or AoE spells. If no-one in the party has Combat Reflexes, stock up on scrolls, wands etc of AoE spells and get the Vargs into a corridor for Lightning Bolt, or into a lump for Fireball. Any AoE effect that does more than 2d6 or 3d4 should kill as many of them as it hits though, so it's just a matter of not failing your CL checks. |
| Shadowshimmer11-29-07, 10:01 AM | Poison them, burn them in their home/base of operations, hit and run/ambush tactics. Get some help. |
| Nephlite11-29-07, 11:20 AM | I need to figure out how to kill 100 vargouilles at level 2 (except myself) who is at level 1. Any and all sensible help is much appreciated. Our DM seems t be slightly on the insane side, and get his jollies out of killing his PC's. Did I mention he's slightly on the messed up side? Yeah... Lots and lots of holy water. Throw them at them. You could dual wield them since on need to hit touch AC of 11. Like 200 vials. It takes 1 hit to kill the creature on average. I suggest 200 because you might miss. Divide and conquer is my suggestion. Kill 10 at a time. Meaning find a way to get 10 by themselves. |
| Mindolin11-29-07, 11:46 AM | I agree with the divide and conquer approach, I also suggest quite a few scrolls of Protection from Evil or potions of the same, and start using bows and crossbows to pick them off when they can't attack you. But yeah, get a new DM because that is sick. |
| Silverclaw12-05-07, 03:09 PM | Traps... lots and lots of traps... set them up and try to lead the Vargouilles into them, possibly by standing on the other side of the traps an fire at them with longbow and heavy crossbows, while staying out of teir range... |
| toucanbuzz12-05-07, 04:40 PM | First, cite the rules. Vargouilles don't come in bunches larger than 11. :teach: Second, cry foul. Tears. Play on human emotions. Third, buy some wax. Stuff it in your ears. TACTIC I: Burn 'em Find a locale where you can lure the vargouille to. If you have to go to them, you're probably screwed. An old warehouse with one giant room works best, or an old barn. Buy oil, 1 silver a pint (covers 5' square). Lots of oil. Douse the inside of the building but lay boards for the BAIT to cross the cellar floor on. Choose your BAIT. Suggest the druid with Longstrider as mounts can be stunned by shrieks. Vargouille fly at 30' a round, so choose wisely. Get their attention. Get them to follow you to the trapped building. Get them to fly in the place, as many as possible. Have a backdoor ready. Vargouille are dumb (Int 5), so they probably won't think to flank you. Retreat, seal the back door and have someone run around and seal the front. Toss in a torch. Let 'er burn. TACTIC II: Net 'em Purchase several nets, sew them together into a giant net that takes 4+ to hold. Lure the low intelligence vargouille to an area where you can drop the net on them. Once they are flopping, douse em and burn em, or pick them off with reach weapons. TACTIC III: Hirelings At 3sp a day, you can hire minimum wage mercenary warriors. Put wax in their ears and for 30g you have a small army of barely sober louts ready to do business. TACTIC IV: Bog down the DM Have all your casters stock up on Color Spray. Win Initiative. Cast Color Spray. Make the DM roll for all the Vargouille affected, individually. A few times of this and his dice hand will get sore. :mage: |
| IAmTheScum12-05-07, 06:23 PM | Think outside the box, guys. Inform the DM that you are finding it very difficult to picture the combat that is taking place. Politely ask that he lay everything out on the battle map. |
| Ayra12-06-07, 04:26 AM | Buy potions of invisibility. Bypass stupidly overpowered encounter. Beat DM senseless. I don't think you can hide that easily from 100 creatures if they all aid each other in their spot checks (I can't see anything in the SRD that says aiding is impossible for spot, so I'm assuming it is possible). Since all vargouilles have a +5 on spot, they only need to roll a 15 or higher, which is a 1 in 4 chance to spot that there's an invisible guy running around. Add +20 to that to see his location (but still have a 50% miss chance). Well I think that with 100 Vargouilles you're not getting past them if they are actively looking for the players. It seems rather impossible to survive this, so I'm guessing your DM is conducting a railroad and will probably save you in time. If he doesn't, ask him the EL of the encounter and how you could possibly survive it. |
| Phrennzy12-06-07, 10:03 AM | Think outside the box, guys. Inform the DM that you are finding it very difficult to picture the combat that is taking place. Politely ask that he lay everything out on the battle map. Winner. |
| Bannek12-06-07, 10:25 AM | ok on the whole not letting them see you... couldn't everyone in the party just close their eyes... therefore negating the shriek ability? This does make it harder to attack but it is about the same difficulty as fighting invisible opponents. Ready Actions to shut your eyes before the shriek ability. |

Shriek, is a sonic ability based of you hearing them shriek. |
| Bannek12-06-07, 11:08 AM | but if you read what everyone else has been saying about the ability, it appears that if you can't see them it doesn't affect your character... hence the shutting of the eyes! |
| Ace_of_time12-06-07, 01:14 PM | Your fighting them all at one time or just have to beat like a castle full of them? Are in a war battle type thing? Nobody else there except your party and a 100 of them? |
| KillerVole12-06-07, 10:15 PM | This thread seems awfully familiar. I could swear I've seen something like it before. The best way to survive would be to use choke points, lure off small groups and eliminate them, obtain a scroll of fireball, or some other massive AOE and nuke them all, or the like. In a straight up fight, you will have no chance. If you can, just blow up their entire lair. (I did this to a DM once. Sending a CN gnome to clear a gunpowder cache of zombies was a terrible idea. I honestly thought I expected supposed to blow it up, and felt really bad when I learned that the DM had been planning a dungeon crawl...) |
| Entropy_Judge12-07-07, 12:35 AM | You have. There are two threads, and different people have been posting on them. |
| Ace_of_time12-07-07, 09:03 PM | If you are in doors. Find a doorway. Then just rotate people out when needed. |

| Dravda12-09-07, 01:26 AM | I've used the "Choke point" strategy once, except it was with an army of skeletons, and we didn't have to fight them: I was just being stupid and decided to antagonize them (they would have left us alone, otherwise). That's the only recommendation I have, other than investing in a hammer gun. -Count Dravda |
| BaseDeltaZero12-09-07, 03:48 AM | My suggestion is to pool your money into a scroll of the most powerful spell you can think off. With 6 or so characters, you have around 5400 GP to play with. This means that you can buy a Scroll of Meteor Swarm. Combine this with a Potion of Eagle's Splendor to increase the sorceror's Charisma to a level he can cast it. Have everyone make a total defense wall around the casting sorceror, and keep trying tilll he makes the spellcraft roll. Instant toasty critter. Use your own AoEs to clean up the survivors. Then sell the barbecued demi-fiends (spicy!) to recoup the gold. Also, Wall of Fire, Blade Barrier or similar spells will work in pinch. Especially if you can somehow make it invisible, so the stupid critters will fly into it unprovoked. If they refuse, a barrage of arrows/spells will likely get them to attempt the barrier. |
| Saiato12-12-07, 05:43 PM | This look like the DM is setting up for Deus ex Machina, but I digress. To survive I would probably try the AoE idea, if you can use a spell to make the enemies fight against each other that might help. This next idea is a bit of a long shot since it involve somehow getting a portable hole, however if you do get one buy a bag of holding and put the hold inside of the bag (not the other way around) this should warp every creature with in ten feet to the astral plains, then head for the nearest portal. If your in some under ground ruins, try knocking down some supports and burring your foes, I don't know if it would work but it's worth trying as a last resort. |
| Ace_of_time12-12-07, 07:31 PM | What about vortex of teeth? Can't remember what level it is. That could help alot. |
| Talisman12-12-07, 07:46 PM | I'd just like to say that this sounds like one hell of a cool adventure for a low-level party. Party accidentally unleashes a horde (say, 40-50...not 100) of vargouilles. Said vargouilles attack the nearby homesteads, annihilating about one a night and consuming everyone and everything like flying, fiendish piranha. Party has to figure out a way to stop said bat-winged menaces. No deus ex machina, no limits, no GM-approved fallback plan. Just turn 'em loose and see what happens. Sounds like a blast to me. I may do this. |
| Ace_of_time12-12-07, 07:50 PM | I've seen this movie. Then the dude show up kill a werewolf then figures out how to kill the vamp. Tranforms, kill the vamp, kills the girl, and goes back to working for the church after discovering his past. I gave it 2 thumps up. |
