| SmiloDan07-23-04, 01:09 PM | Hi! How do you capture something in Gaseous Form? The only spells I can think of are Otiluke's Force Sphere and Wall of Force and Force Cage. We were all level 12 (my druid, an arcane trickster, a mystical fighter tank, and a warmage evoker) and were taking on 3 vampires. Fortunately, I had Death Ward on me. Then the last vamp went Gaseous on us and we needed something from her. I tried summoning an air elemental to Vortex it, but the Save DC was too low. Then I was stupid. I was wildshaped as a dire bear, and I inhaled the vampire. Well, half of it. It then went solid in my lungs. Well, her legs did. That really hurt. I think I need to tell this tale on the "Stupidest thing you ever did thread..." I hope you're satisfied, Zetal! ;) |
| Zetal07-23-04, 01:43 PM | Yes i admit i smoked it but i didnt enhale it sir..... :OMG! Me happy now.... LOL But i think this will go down in history of are groups as one of the most Memorable moments and wildest thing that has ever happen at are table..... And I thank you from the great memories Smilodan... we do really appreciated the humor that it all gave us. |
| ChaoticGod07-23-04, 01:57 PM | Hmm, Wind Wall ??? Cold spells to condense the gas??? Summon something you can talk to and have it inhale the gas??? Wall of Stone?? Vampire are just tough to capture unless you find the coffin. Commune with Nature and see if there are any likely crypt sites nearby, caves, barrows, etc. |
| MrkGrismer07-23-04, 03:04 PM | Third edition rules allow you to still beat it unconcious with nonleathal damage, it just has DR 10/magic. Got a magic Truncheon or high level monk? |
| ben the blue07-23-04, 05:00 PM | equip the everyone in the group with a pair of bellows and several airtight containers. use the bellows on the gaseous thing and put it into the seperate containers. If you don't manage to get it all it won't get far or bring some sort of porous rock/gravel and try to keep it ocupied while it gets soaked up although this would take ages. or you could try trapping it in a high ceilinged room using some sort of heating spell to keep it up in the air. orfinally try mingleing some corosive gas eg chlorine so that when it solidifies it gets burned. this could be used to keep it as a gas. ok theese are just my ideas for now if i have any more i will post them |
| SmiloDan07-23-04, 05:40 PM | Yeah, we were kind of on a side quest and got trapped in a tower so we didn't have any prep stuff. Just our usual stuff. |

Like say, gust of wind, or as someone else suggested windwall. Or if you happen to be packing one, a wind fan might work too. |
| primemover00307-23-04, 08:59 PM | You basically have to trap it for 2 hours to destroy it. It won't take any more damage... so there is no more hurting it. Beads of force are nice... |

Really the only way. Non-undead in gaseous form, tho. Ya can knock them out. |
| UZI07-23-04, 11:46 PM | Smack it until it is forced to stay gaseous (at 0hp) and retreat to its coffin. Track it back there, even though it will be night and can fly, it still only has a speed of 20'. |
| Zetal07-24-04, 07:26 AM | I am the DM for that campaign. And the set up was is there was no coffin they just had to beat down the Vampire to sever negative hit point in which all three had to be in order for them to disapate in order for a medalion to appear thus which was one of six medalion to obtain in order to gain entry into the lords of the tower's room. What the players did not know is that the vampires could not leave the room for they where guardian's like the other 5 rooms which the other guardian's where bound the same. But that was DM information and not the players info at the time being. But the one in question turn gaseous in order to avoid the group attack in which it was about to recive by the surrounding party in which it moved to a point in order to bring a new offence to the with out being mass attacked. |

| MrkGrismer07-26-04, 02:48 PM | Originally posted by Kaminton Well, the originating post mentioned combat with 3 vampires, so... Yeah, but the thread title doesn't. Thought the OP was also asking for advice in general. Apparently not. Besides, spells also work on gaseous. So there are lots of options. |
| SmiloDan07-27-04, 12:00 PM | This was a general question that dealt specifically with vamps. But in general, how can you deal with gaseous form? Supposedly, a gaseous creature can escape through a pinprick. |

Supposedly, a gaseous creature can escape through a pinprick. Vamps cannot be taken below 0 hp. Other creatures, including undead, can be. Just keep smacking them with magical weapons until they die or are destroyed - gaseous form only moves 10ft (40 ft for ogre mages). Or, since most gaseous forms are spells or spell-like abilities, target a dispel magic at it. So... what would happen if gaseous form is the only active spell on you, you're busy seeping in through some cracks in the wall, and the wizard casts an area dispel magic, covering you? (I ready an action so that "When the gas cloud starts to enter a hole, I cast dispel magic centered at that area"). If the dispel succeeds, are you, um, stuck? |
| Zetal07-27-04, 06:26 PM | Gaseous form for a vampire is a SU supernatural ability and there for not subject to dispel spells. And in the section in Vampire weakness it does state that they can be taken below 0 hp. Pg 253 MM |
| jasper07-27-04, 08:58 PM | usally two tums but sometimes I have restore to the pink stuff |
| Kaminton07-27-04, 11:06 PM | Originally posted by Zetal Gaseous form for a vampire is a SU supernatural ability and there for not subject to dispel spells. And in the section in Vampire weakness it does state that they can be taken below 0 hp. Pg 253 MM Well, I did say "most", with the vampire's gaseous form in mind :P But even if they can be taken below 0 hp, it's irrelevant to what I said (beat up on the gas till it dies or is destroyed) because from p252 of the MM, it says under fast healing "If reduced to 0 hit points in combat, it automatically assumes gaseous form and attempts to escape. It must reach its coffin home within 2 hours or be utterly destroyed. (It can travel up to nine miles in 2 hours). Any additional damage dealt to a vampire forced into gaseous form has no effect." So you still have to follow it back to its coffin, or find some way to prevent it from getting there for 2 hours. |
| SnowbearK07-28-04, 01:26 AM | Walls of iron, stone, ice, and force will become your best friends if your sorcerer knows any of them and has a spell slot left. Wall of ice will hold up his escape for quite some time and might give you enough time to wait for for a vampire to die. In this particular case, since the vamp can't leave the room, all you have to do is sit around and wait. 2 hours and he's destroyed. Unless the room qualifies as his coffin, in which case you're screwed until he pops up again. Hope you've got comfortable armor on. |
| SmiloDan07-28-04, 11:41 AM | Actually, I have a monk's belt, so I'm very comfy...except for the taste of vampire feet in my mouth....and the ripped out throat.... |
| Thomar_of_Uointer07-28-04, 11:06 PM | I rule that you cannot become corporeal inside of someone, and are forced out untill you reach an open enough space, taking 1d6 points of bludgeoning damage per 5' travelled. |
