I'm new to the game and seeking advice. All the character classes have thier strength and weaknesses, yet I find myself being outdone more often than not by Rogues in particular reguardless of what I do. They're useful and you somewhat need one around to detect thoes traps or unlock this or scout that. However some players I know have a tendency to get out of line and I find myself being thier next target weather it be from NPCs or Players who try to steal my gold and other useful items, or just try to outright kill me! They can hide before you take a swing at them, evade spells, steal your possessions from you and then kill you. So the question is... how do you fight them?

Tell your DM to stop being such a buzzkill.

That's what I would do.

Another good advice is never stand closer than 10' to any sort of cover. You need cover to hide, the second they step out from behind soemthing, you see them.

as long as you stand that far away from something, it's impossible to sneak up on someone, because of how hiding works.

Step 1 : Take over the world

Step 2 : Start a secter of government dedicated to scouting out small children for talents.

Step 3 : Kill all small children that have a knack for stealth.

In about 40-60 years 95% of rouges will be gone as the majority are human or halfling, the second and third shortest lived races in the PHB. Therefore - no more rouges = no more problems with rouges.

make shore if there is going to be a fight you are not caught off guard, and preferibly choose the setting (a nice flat grassland might be nice)

get freindly with wizards who can use magic to find him and help bring him back.

become a lich, and say goodbye to sneak attacks

Well, first reevaluate your gaming group and decide if you want to put up with that. If you live in a fairly populated area, there's likely another group around.

But on to your question:
Rogues may be good at hiding, but they really can't stand up to another in out-and-out combat. What class are you? Fighter-type characters only need worry about that first attack...after that, the rogue is effectively dead, as in one-on-one battle (melee especially), the rogue just can't outdo the fighter. They can't hide again while you can see them. Make sure your DM enforces that. Now, mages are trickier. If you have access to Mirror Image, Invisibility, or other spells that would make it harder for the rogue to attack you, then use them. Summoning spells would also be helpful. Then blast away with any kind of spell you like. A word of caution, though; rogues have high dexterity, which translates into good ranged attacks. Be careful of those.

So, if I can get this straight, you are having trouble with NPC and PC rogues because both are A) kicking your ass B) taking your stuff.

I don't know your class but here are some tips. A rogue has a very low health. If you are a fighter then in a one on one fight you should win, (unless the rogue has an invisibility item he is using) If he tries to hit you and hide he gets a -20 to hide, so he shouldn't be too well concealed.

Spells, they are not immune to spells or even close. They are pretty good against reflex saves, and they get evasion. A fort and Will save spell will probably take them out of commision though.

Are they outshining you? Again, knowing your class would help but, here we go.

A fighter will beat a rogue in combat if you make him correctly, they can also whoop constructs and undead while a rogue sits with his thumb up his butt.

They get a lot of skill points but take a monk. A monk will win in speed and destroy him in jump. Monks do get skills they are good with and they specialize in.

Wizards/sorcerers are much more versatile, they can do massive damage or support the party or negate magic traps or obstacles, etc..

A barbarian is like a fighter, he should win over a rogue in combat.

A cleric is has some versatility like a wizard but health and BAB to back it up.

Druids have, again, some versatility through spells, an animal companion for combat and other situations.

Rangers are talented in a different way than a rogue and can compare to them in ability to vanish, (hide in plain sight) and are decent fighters through their abilities.

Bards are team buffers, small time healers, and, depending on your classes, can be pretty versatile.

If you can get back with some answers it would help: Class, Level, Specific problems (outshined in combat or non-combat, etc.,)

Best way to deal with Rogues?

Anything that requires a Will or Fortitude Save.

Actually, I like Fort saves better as Rogues with the "Slippery Mind" ability seem to always get out of it.

So, make the traps with level draining Fort saves. That should really make the Rogues garden stand up and take notice.

This scenario calls for better co-players.

Only bassturds steal your stuff if they're in a party with you.

Well to stop the stealing of your items.. if your a wizard or sorcerer you could always ask to research a version of alarm that works when a Rogue steals something. And a level 7 Binder can bind the correct vissage and will not only get sneek attack himself but is always informed when someones trying to use slight of hand to steal from them. use Explosive runes on your items to prevent them from wandering off, yea he can check traps on them but its not an easy roll to find.

To stop the sneek attack damage you can get cover, darkness blur or some spell like that means they cant sneek attack you with out a way to see past it. if hes hideing on you get a druid to slap farie fire on him. evasion doesnt help so much against spells with no save.

Use your own tatics against him. Sunder his weapon, trip him and beat the snot out of him. Slay living him, have your familiar keep an eye on him, or be sneeky yourself and grab a bunch of sense motive, spot, listen, or sneek attack him right back.

My favorate is to use Status so you always know exactly where he is. no hideing from you unless he knows how to jump planes and when you realise the party rogue is "adjacent to you with his hand in your pockets"... well it just makes hideing, stealing, and backstabbing allys that much harder.

But honstly if the rogue is in your party and hes stealing from you or trying to steal from party members you dont need to stand for it. likely the rest of your party doesnt like the rogue stealing things eather. Get him tossed in jail or just get him drunk and leave him alone and cold in the middle of wherever you were. Your companions are people you should trust and be able to work alongside to acomplish your goals. If you cant trust and work with them, dont work with them. Bye bye, time to hire a replacement companion.

They can hide before you take a swing at them
This is actually something most rogues can't do. As soon as you see them and pay attention, they can't hide anymore unless they have hide in plain sight (which usual rogues don't get - they need Hide in plain sight, which is available to rangers of 17th level and assassins of 8th level)

Put most of your stuff in the hands of a pc or npc who will give it to your next character.Die in such a way you take the old rogue with you.Make your next character a better rogue than your buddy.Be better at stealing his stuff, shopping in town, buy a cursed weapon that drains hp from someone like him?Good luck. :)

If one of your freinds is constantly stealing from you would you still hang with them (irl). NO!

Then a party should'nt have to eather.

Give it back to him. Sneak up on him and try to steal an item of him. (Even if your a fighter.) when he catches you smash him.

Treat him the same way he treates you. Just in the open.

Ask the DM to give you more combat focused campaigning and ask for a lot of battles against plants, oozes, the undead, elementals, creatures without discernible anatomies, creatures that cannot be flanked, creatures with Fortification armor and constructs. Rub it in the Rogue's face that he can't do jack against a good quarter of the Monster Manual.
If he keeps stealing booby trap your gear and have a Cleric come in and cast Zone of Truth. If he keeps it up you do not have his back ever in combat until he returns the items and atones somehow. From now on he is boneclaw fodder and Tendriculous chow.

Why is it this kind of thing NEVER happens to me when I play? I pray, PRAY.... another member of the party tries this crap with me.

To answer your questions....Wait. Wait till the rogue is at a moment of weakness like surrounded by critters or just failed a save, then move in and crush the bastard with everything you have.

Also, read the DMG and PHB sections that deal with every ability a rogue can use or has access to. Become an expert at knowing their strengths and weaknesses.

This happened in a game a long time ago, the party was supposed to climb down a huge cliff into an opening. Just as we were getting our gear ready for the descent we get attacked by some harpies. The fighter in the crew delayed till the end of the round, the rogue had gone first naturally and was using a bow. At the end of the round the fighter bull rushed the rogue off the cliff, everyone in the party was shocked except me. I tell you what ...a 600' fall cleared up the party drama alright. The DM even asked for spot checks to see who noticed and everyone failed. It was hilarious. The fighter even went so far as to urinate on his corpse later. The wizard animated him and used him to find traps later in the session. Old wiz was ****** that some of his gear was stolen as well. Fun times, fun times.

To be more specific:

This guy is a human rogue vs. me who (50% of the time) plays a human paladin.

You can see the problem. That and he uses a cheap little trick that I also posted about.

When you say you are outdone by the rogue, i'm assuming you mean that they are shining in combat/ropleplaying and you are not. Unless your dm is only providing encounters and situations that rogues can handle, my advice here is suck it up, congratulate the rogue on a job well done and see where you can improve. (if the dm IS making rogue only encounters talk to him.her about making them for everyone)

As for rogues getting out of line, if you are suffering from player rogues robbing you, attacking you and stealing treasure, on any kind of regular basis, you should discuss it with the dm and players immediately. While most people wouldnt mind the occasional naughtyness from the rogue when being roleplayed well, any kind of sustained naughtyness is diruptive, and will end up in conflict, which may spread to ooc unhappiness. There is no justification for it. Some roleplaying 'opportunitys' have to be passed up for the benefit of harmony and smooth running, because it is a group game, not a collection of solo campains that happen at the same table at the same time.

As for attacks from npc rogues, again if these are regular and unplesant, you have to consider the campain setting. If you are in an appropriate location like a pirate operated town, random acts of robbery and violence by rogue types is a definate possability. role play it, and if you cant handle it have your character leave the town. If however you are in what is supposedly a reasonabl law abiding town, but you are being singled out for unusual amounts of robbery and violence, take your dm aside and mention your concerns to him. He may be working on plot hooks accociated with this, or he may just not be aware of how it is anoying you. hopefully he can alleviate your concerns or adjust the game accordingly.

As for tactics, many have been suggested. The best is to roleplay your character learning from past encounters. Keeps getting his purse cut/snatched? think about a money belt. People keep leaping out of dark alleys? stay away from dark alleys. Robbed while you sleep? hide your wealth, and consider alarming your equipment. Stabbed in the vitals a lot? consider better protecting yourself, with better armor, magical enchantments, spells or skills.

At the end of the day, the bestest advice is to talk to the dm :-) A dm who knows how all his players feel about his game is more likely to make the next game more appealing for everyone. Happy players make a happy dm.

your a palidin right? if he steals things from you thats evil. my advice to you is to get smiting. once hit with that 2 or 3 times he will stop. also you should check out the book of exhalted deeds and read up on converting his alignment. remember just because his character sheet says CN does not mean he is.

my ways for deafeating rogues when i am a...

Barbarian- i hit him with the axe and he goes smash

bard- who steals from a bard? thats just a dumb idea he is the giver outer of buffs. but they do have some nifty abilities, like fascinate.

Cleric- blind/deafness. he needs a fort save or he is blind until you heal it.

Druid- 2 words. polar bear. no one wants to mess with that, plus if you rub snow on your nose you hide better than him

Fighter- I wait until he is in front of me, usually in a tunnel or the woods, and then i full attack.

Monk- disarm and trip him every time he trys to do anything to you. oh and one time i was the obnoxious rogue. i got quivvering palmed and told id die if i did anything wrong in the next week.

Ranger- if youve got the ranged tree your set, just barrage of arrows when he is far off, like 80 feet or so. if youve got 2 wpn fighting, thats a ton of attacks a turn and do what fighters do

as a Rogue i think, why are there two of us, and then i sneak into the room at night and slit the throat. down to one

Sorcerer- dont play them much but there is always rock to mud then dispell it when he is waist deep

wizard- see above. but i play it more often. '

each class has a decent way to deal with them.

Okay, you are a paladin. No healing. No lay on hands. No Remove Disease. You guard your treasure like a maniac. Try to force an alignment audit on him. Also, if he keeps trying to steal and attack from party members it would be very much in character to just ask the group to drop the rogue from the group and have the player roll up a new character. You might be very surprised at the support you get from both the players and the DM.

*feels tugging at his belt pouches* *blink* *turns* SMITE EVIL!

Seriously, a rogue whose stealing from a paladin party cant be good, and would have a hell of a time trying to be neutral.... so smite him. Your equipped to despsense justice.... how many places have laws condoning theft? Really?

Secondly, I'd like to point out that Paladins are moral and honorable by very definition. But that doesn't mean you have to be a punk and take cheap shots and sneak attackings and not do anything about. He sneak attacks you? Spirited Charge, Bite, Hoof, Hoof him. That simple.

LOL then the problem is not him. It is you LOL.
Paladins suck! Having the required 8 or less intelegence to be on is the killer LOL. Understandabe since any champion of good of 9 or more intelegence is NG hehe so paladins are automaticly idiots.

Also Krusk stealing is chaotic not evil. The paladin probally cant use smite if is is CN... Then again the moronic paladin will probally try since he doesnt know any better but it will not be effective hehe.

PS maybe I have a bias against paladins... MAYBE...

If part of your problem is your stuff going missing, get a wizard to arcane mark some of your stuff in inconspicuous places. When it goes missing, get an arcane caster to cast locate object. When it shows up in the rogue's posession, it's time for an uncomfortable question and answer session as the party realizes that their stuff could go missing at any given moment because the rogue is a jerk that can't seem to understand that stealing from people you travel with is a bad idea.

Play a necromancer, and assault him/her with hordes of undead and barbarians. Undead are not affected by critical attacks and sneak attacks, therefore a rogue's greatest weapons, sneak attack, is obsolete. In addition, a barbarian's ability to aviod flanking also makes the rogue's sneak attack useless. Or, if you have the Complete Warrior, get the eyes on the back of your head feat. That will also help.

Ugh, rouges.
They're good when played well
But in the Eberron Age of Worms campaign... we have a CN one- a changeling- who is my character (27-year old, former 13-year old, 'son' of the bordello)'s sister and friend and stuff.
But he keeps flinching stuff from enemies.
Yeah, I sound pissy. But when in a 5-player game he's got more gold than the rest of us combined...
Hopefully his transition to NE via CE won't involve PLAYER stealing. And I know via DM telling me that he's doing something party-beneficial with the cash, but still. Argh.
