How do you deal with wizards that seem to be spontaneous casting such as frost dwarf wizard (Have groups gang of melees 7+) who memorizes daylight (even though it gives everyone in his group -1 to attack roll) and gust of wind to combat a group of adventures who has never used Fog cloud and Deeper darkness.

Make him give you a list of prepared spells on a sheet of paper. Mark off a spell when he casts it. If he says he's casting a spell that he hasn't prepared beforehand or that he has already cast, have him "mistcast" and lose a round, and he will quickly learn to keep track of his spells.

Check his sheet at the begining of every day after he studies his spell book. the misspell idea is pretty good. Another way is having one of the other players keep track of his sheet and inform the group if he is doing something wrong.

For DM vs PC wizard: Require PC to present a list of memorized spells after each prep period and mark off spells as used.

vs. an NPC Wizard. Ask the DM to justify why the NPC has that spell memorized, especially for niche/limited use spells. That Frost Dwarf may know Daylight for an emergency when he must fight his own kind. The DM should prepare NPCs spell lists before knowing exactly what the PCs will use and should remember many NPC will not know the PCs as well as he does.

Alternatively, prepare a small stack of cards, each containing the name of a spell the wizard has prepared. Each time he cast that spell, the appropriate card is then revealed to everyone and then discarded. That way, the secrecy of the rest of the spells prepared will not be compromised. :)

Or, assuming that you're a DM dealing with a player who is doing this, tell them to stop cheating and write down their spells each day.

Don't come up with rules and in-game reasons to deal with OOC cheating players. If he can't play by the rules, he shouldn't play.

PC'S
Have a standard spell list for dungon dwelling.1 for town/city.

you can modify these lists if you know there is something special in there. Even then you would only change a few spells.

As for the DM casting spells as he pleases keep track of the spells he uses then you know thay will be in the baddies spell book.
