How do you determine spells for a Wizard created at 5th level? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've played D&D since 2000, and until now have never played a wizard. I have made sorcerors, druids, clerics, warlocks, and healers, but never a wizard. In the process of making this 5th level wizard, I realized that the number of spells a wizard has access to is pretty limitless, within the confines of the rules of course. All the other spellcasting classes I had played drew a clear line as to the number of spells you knew. Either limited in number as the sorcerer and warlock. Or, as the divine casters, all available. With a wizard however, I gain 2 spells per level and can choose which level of any that I have access to, plus the ones I gain for first level.

Now my quandry: A character played from 1st level will most likely have encountered other wizards (or their spellbooks), scrolls, or other sources to add material to their spellbooks. So, as I am creating a 5th level Wiz, how do I determine (or accurately, how do YOU determine) how many spells a 5th level wizard should/would/could/can have?

Generally the approach I've had/seen was pretty straightforward:

Start by choosing all your spells that you get for free by class advancement.

To add spells to your spellbook beyond this during character generation, pay the cost for buying a scroll of that spell + the cost of scribing into your spellbook. Do this as much as you like, to the spending limits of character generation (and with your DM's approval of any non-Core sources, of course).

In the course of a game you might be able to do it more cheaply than this: capturing an enemy spellbook or borrowing one from a friendly wizard -- but both those cases access to a spellbook has a certain treasure value, even if the gold pieces don't actually drip through your fingers. Basically, in the course of a game you might get spells more cheaply, occasionally, but your access to the spell of your choice might be limited. During character generation, you are paying full price every time but you're getting exactly what you want (subject to DM approval).

Roll your treasure and hope for alot of scrolls or a generous DM who will allow you to say you steal up books at every library hoping for a bonus spell in it :P

Or the Arcane master feat or something. Says basically you learned magic from a mentor who gave you access to many spells he deemed necessary.

Er - you do not 'roll treasure' during character creation above first level.

When creating a character above first level, you have a certain amount of wealth available - your character'sd possesions should be about equal to this amount.

For a Wizard, spend about half of your wealth on scrolls and on addign these scrolls to your book.

I would say, it's like this:
1st level:
Any 0-level spell you want
3x 1st level spells + Int-modifierx 1st level spells
2nd level: 2x 1st level spells
3rd level: 2x 2nd level spells
4th level: 2x 2nd level spells
5th level: 2x 3rd level spells

That's what any wizard will have. Anything more, you have to pay for: 150 x spell level gp (50gp for finding a wizard/library to copy the spell and 100gp for material). As a DM I would not allow any above 3rd level spells zo be aquired that way, although it is possible.

At 5th level you should have 9000gp to spend on all your equipment, including additional spells in your spellbook.

Thanks all.
So essentially the cost of the spell in scroll form and the cost to put it tinto a spellbook. Thats easy enough I suppose

Does your DM allw Complete Arcane?

If yes, will he allow you to take the Collegiate Wizard feat? (p181)

If the answer to that is yes, I suggest you take it.
