I too wonder this, how is it that some people play dnd online... I understand NWN and other MMORPGs... but I don't get how groups can successfuly play PnP online... can someone take the time to explain to the "must be gathered around a table" narrow minded people like me? :)

(I'm not going to assume the author of this thread has the exact hang up I do)

I'm not sure about this, but i thought that the wizards website had special chatboxes for playing DnD.

Furthermore you could use chatprograms like MSN to contact each other and share images of the battlefield. The only problem would be dice rolls. :D

I'm sure there are special third party programs meant to play PnP D&D online with. But i don't know any of them, i suggest a google search.

I'm involved in a few online D&D games. The one I DM uses AIM chatrooms to handle everything. For dice rolls, we just use a trust system and real dice that we each roll, and for hidden rolls I can roll myself. For combat, I keep track of positions and then will tell the players distances and locations when they ask for them. One game I play in online uses mIRC, another chat program, and for that one we use a battlegrid where the DM gives us positions ala battleship (e.g. E-4) and we each keep track of positions on either gridpaper or with minis.

For the group I DM, this was the only option to keep our games going due to being scattered for college. I have players in 2 different cities in Michigan and one player in Florida, so meeting for a in person game would be pretty hard.

There are some nice things about playing in chatrooms, such as being able to actually pass messages to players in secret or make a spot/hide/whatever roll without players asking, "What was that for?"

Well, one thing that would help is to not bump your own posts because people aren't responding quickly enough to suit you. That tends to throw a wrench into the second step - which is to make acquaintances through the boards or other mediums. Then broach the idea of an online game with your friends. Alternatively, you can seek out forums for games looking for new players. The gamer classifieds sub-board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=347) might be a good place to start.

As for the technological end of things, we have a staff DnD game on the MUD I build for, and we've been using an IRC channel to pretty good effect. With the medium's scripting capabilities, you can find or build your own dice-bot to solve the issue of keeping rolls honest. The use of mats and minis would be a bit more difficult to work out - though we solve that problem by simply not using them.
