The basic game shouldn't say how to make a PC. the basic games come with pregenerated characters.

If you want to make your own character, you have to follow the rules on how to make one in the Player's Handbook.

I would like to put in a plug for the CodeMonkey publishing character generator. They are working on a new one to replace e-tools. I have used e-tools for a few years and despite it's quirks I find it the easiest way to make characters.

First, you must travel to the ancient elven sage of the Dark Woods, but BE WARNED. The Dark Woods are filled with ancient and terrible dangers. Creatures long forgotten have lived for ages, protecting the Dark Woods from bandits and orcs.

If you make it past the residents of the Dark Woods, you will enter the Kingdom of Eternal Night, where the Elven Sage and his elven followers have lived in peace for many generations. They live in ancient and traditional ways, and are mistrusting of outsiders. You must sway the ancient elven sage towards your cause if you are to obtain the Piercing Lantern.

This artifact was used many moons ago when a dark necromancer made a deal with a terrible demon to cover the land in eternal darkness. This unholy night gave great power to the necromancer's army, and thus the world as we knew it would have been destroyed. The sage crafted this holy latern, and took it to the oldest of forests to be blessed by the great Elven Gods to give it a light that could pierce all darkness. With it, he drove away all who dwell in the night. The undead army was defeated swiftly after its creation and the sage restored light to the world.

If the sage gives you his most treasured pocession, you must use it to pass through the Black Bogs to the West. A curse was placed on that land over a thousand years ago, for the people who lived on that land defied their gods. This insult was punished with the Decaying Mist, a magical fog which covers the land and causes all life within it to shrivel and rot the longer it stays in the fog. Eventually, the body becomes a walking zombie and the mind is lost forever. Plants decay and water turns black and oily. Only the light from the Piercing Lantern can drive the fog and the damned souls back and allow safe passage.

In the heart of the Black Bogs lies the tomb of the Necromancer, the one who almost covered the world in Darkness. Amongst his crypt lies the ancient books of knowledge. One of these books has what you seek. But his crypt is old, and is filled with many traps to keep thieves and graverobbers away. Not to mention that evil attracts evil, and his crypt has become the home for many vile creatures escaping the Decaying Mist.

Rumor has it that a cult has formed, trying to resurrect the Necromancer and once more bring darkness to the land. They will try to hinder your efforts along your journey, so you must be prepared. Foil their plot, make it past these great challenges, and you will obtain the tome with the ultimate knowledge:

How to create a character.

Good luck.

Buy the core rule book set from, say, Barnes and Noble. 50$ for all three 40$ books.
