| JadeSpider964305-11-05, 12:39 AM | Had a really (and i mean REALLY) strange session last week. 4 ECL 5 characters killed a legion of drow (on accident actually), looted them all for WAY more money than ECL 5 characters should be allowed to DREAM about (litterally a wagon full of platinum). Anyway we get it back to town, and I'm wheeling my share around in a wheelbarrow while my party does some quest research. At some point while interrogating NPCs they get stuck and there's a lot of praying to dieties, and holy crap....FOUR AVATARS SHOW UP, and 1 of the avatars happens to be Olidammara and he catches a glimpse of my wheelbarrow full of cash. So he stalks me for a couple hours and trys to get me to play a game of chance for my stash (he offered his lute, not bad I admit, but no way I'm gonna trust a diety to play fair with my INSANE FORTUNE!) Anyway I got him to go away by promising him a game "later". So I've spent almost a week pondering the question "What game should I play when that little !@#$ comes back?" If the DM will allow it, I have a great "contest", but it's hardly a game of chance (it does nicely involve my backstory though). I fully intend to demand that another diety preside over the game to insure no cheating. But what kind of game(s) should we play? dice? (BORING!) kinda wish I had a Deck of Many Things... |
| PlutoniumKnight05-11-05, 12:58 AM | Well since he is the god of theives and luckiness sometimes don't try a game of luck, maybe play a strategy game as your best bet, give him a huge disadvantage. Do something that involves nothing random, have it be strickly LN, that might give you an edge. If it's random, he has already won. |
| Tsuul05-11-05, 02:14 AM | Game of riddles. Don't let your DM know in advance or you blow your advantage. Try not to resort to the "What have I got in my pocket?" riddle. |

This game has just lost any credibility it may have had in the beginning... So challenge Olidammara to a game of Dungeons & Dragons ;) :D |
| SnowbearK05-11-05, 03:57 AM | :nonono: |
| Norseman05-11-05, 04:30 AM | If I were you, I'd challenge him/her to a game of chess (I assume you can play it pretty good). My guess is your DM wants to get rid of some of that excess money, and in all fairness, I agree with him. I think you'd be best off to donate some of it (say 25-40%) to some charity. Or, play his game but only play with the amount of money you're willing to lose. Edit: As a DM, if I really screwed up and need to take back some uberpowerful stuff, I will take it back however I have to. If your DM is anything like me, he'll probably have your stuff get stolen, or charge you with some crime with a really high fine, etc. If the DM wants it, you're going to lose it. |
| Enaloindir05-11-05, 05:01 AM | If your DM has any knowledge of the divine rules, you have no chance whatsoever of winning...no chance. If you play a game of chance, the deity can use its alter reality ability to influence the outcome. If you play a game of skill, she'll know exactly what you will do a few weeks in advance (so, technically, the deity already knows what game you will play, even though you haven't made up your mind though). The only way to guarantee a "fair" game is a binding contract, but I don't think a chaotic deity (god of chance) will accept/respect it fully. :) Enaloindir |
| AzarKing05-11-05, 05:56 AM | Pray to another god to counter Olidammara's ability to influence the outcome of the game ;) |
| fallabel05-11-05, 07:18 AM | Just curious: where can I read about divine rules? |
| Enaloindir05-11-05, 07:21 AM | Here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35) or here (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/divine.html). Enaloindir |
| feartheinvinceblehamster05-11-05, 08:14 AM | It's callled you have one of the other avatars of a more powerful diety that is lawful than ollie oversee the signing, therefore if ollie cheats that diety will crush him like the miserable thief scum he is. if your DMs a jerk which I have reason to believe he will not think a Lawful Diety would be there to enforce a contract. If there not, tell your DM by the rules that ollidarma must be pursued by..is it kolyaruts? for the rest of eternity until they destroy Ollidarma utterly. If this happens, go plane shift to his palace and take your money back. tell the guard it was your money. Guard: What are u doin' there? you: taking my money back, ollidarma's dead guard: okay...WHAT ARE YOU DOING You: interest guard: YOU'VE GOT OLLIDARMA'S THRONE OF POWER AND 500,000 PP!!! you: interest. |
| gavalicks05-11-05, 08:45 AM | Get another Diety to play with him my vote goes to Kord or Fharlangh. Or get a Fate Spinner, Luck stealing Halfling, cleric with the luck and/or trickery domanin - to kill any chance the Diety might have at winning. -10 to skills checks for the diety, plus the ability to steal the nessary skills and luck of the diety, and the ability to cast spells to boost his own natural talents. In the end you are cheating but lets face it the diety has spells on continue which is cheating, so any little bit help. Or convert the loot into other goods such as a house and bank bonds then say Sorry Mr. Olidammara, but this deal came up that I just couldn't miss out on, you know oppertunity only knocks once. Of course you know that no matter what you do if you win, or run you will have a Diety as an enemy. Which will make your life a living nightmare, by sending his Rouge, clerics for revenge after you. My vote for game is High low, Highest card win, 2 beat Ace which beats all others. This way his luck, skill, and cheating will make him choose an Ace and will make you choose the lowest card 2 which beats the Ace. Use ones own strength against them. |
| Heahengel05-11-05, 10:58 AM | How about this: 1. Figure out how long into the future he can see. 2. Write down a randomly ordered ranking of a deck of cards, to be revealed to all [future sight range] + 1 days after the event. Also, keep this paper out of his clarsentient range (I believe he has one). 3. Draw the cards, best card wins (upon revealing). This will probably lead to a fun adventure trying to stop the god from changing the list when he figures out that he lost. Two questions then apply: 1. Can he influence chance even if doesn't know which card is best? (i.e. can he get generically lucky, instead of altering chance to make him get a specific card) 2. Would he be able to learn about the specific ordering because of his knowledge of his Portfolio? Of course, all of this should really be impossible. Just out of curiosity, how did you kill that army? |
| Tsuul05-11-05, 01:24 PM | It's callled you have one of the other avatars of a more powerful diety that is lawful than ollie oversee the signing, therefore if ollie cheats that diety will crush him like the miserable thief scum he is. How does a fifth level character get a diety more powerful then Ollie to oversee the signing? With a wagonload of platinum of course! |
| Aki Warren05-11-05, 02:10 PM | You go to a Temple of Helm. Tell the priest what's going on. In my campigian the priest would begin giggling like a little school girl, but then again, I'm quite mad. :invasion: This to makes me giggle |
| Morka05-11-05, 03:00 PM | First option: Decide you want to play your money on whatever game; chess, for example. But just before, tell him this: "I bet the other half of my money you're going to beat me on chess." So if he beat you on chess, you give him your money (but he has to return you the money because he lost the bet). If you beat him on chess, you win the equivalent of your money, which you return to him because you lost the bet. Anyways, you keep all your platinum! Second option: Just tell him: "You, as a god, are all-mighty, heh? I bet you can't create a rock so heavy that you're unable to lift it." If he create any rock he is able to lift, he looses. If he ever create a rock he is unable to lift, that's just because he is not all-mighty... |
| snowlynx05-11-05, 03:52 PM | Puss in boots response: you need to convince him that in order to play a really fun game of chance, the chances have to be completely and utterly equal. I'm not sure how succesful you can be at this; tricking a god of trickery might be near impossible. (for those unaware of the story, the idea was that the cat defeated an ogre by convincing the shapechanging ogre that the ogre was not really powerful unless it could assume a lesser form like a mouse, not just a greater form...and then the cat killd the mouse.) Another thought: give him a game that doesn't end, sort of like 1001 tales (Arabian Nights). He may visit you quite often, but if he likes the game, you won't lose your money, and you won't gain his lute, but he might try to keep you from dying (that would be no fun, since the game isn't over yet.) |
| bomaz05-11-05, 04:14 PM | this is a fun thread you bet he cant beat the (lets see whos the lawful god of strategy? if there is one) on chess or to make a game of chance fair he gives you his diefic powers for the duration of the game if you wanted a deck of many things... HI ollie can we play poker with a deck of many things? perhaps a game of who can live the shortest. you can be resurected and then you win if he dies bringing back a dead god is a hell of a workload hm now what was that epic artefact called that involved dice? bet that if each of you take half of the money for a year do with it whatever you like and then whoever has earned the most money wins half of the others pile and the loser gets 1/4 of the winners pile see who for a year can be the least chaotic/trickiest see who for a year can affekt the world the least, by being a deity in existance he affects the world alot. if he wins this you will have alot of fun i mean what deeds will your chas acomplish every time he grant spells he influence the world. if he lose... |
| feartheinvinceblehamster05-11-05, 04:27 PM | wheel barrow full of platinum=at least 50,000 pieces of platinum. 50,000 pieces of platnum: 1,000 pounds 1,000 pounds droped on ollies head from 700 ft. due to fly spell=somewhere around 1,500 D6 points of damage. you get what platinum the townsfolk don't grab on your way down. it fixes both the DMs problem and your Problem at the same time. Lxarth, i am not an idiot for this plan |
| JadeSpider964305-11-05, 05:41 PM | just to clarify, all this platinum....ROFL is NOT a problem for me *writes up a shopping list* And the DM is being a real good sport about it, he didn't send the dieties after us....the rest of the party was praying for divine intervention while I was trying to spend my money, they summoned up Fharlanghn, Vecna, Weejas and Olidammara (Weejas actually just came cause it was a diety convention and we ticked her off) . Olidammara was just the only one interested in my cash. But I talked him out of it, I just owe him a high-stakes game "later" I'm thinking mabye my wings(half-fiend) vs his lute. some of you said to get a diety to oversee the game. Yeah I already planned to do that. Tsuul asked how I could get a diety to do that....well it's not my problem, if Oli wants his game he has to supply the referee (supply, not select! I think I'm gonna pick St Cuthbert). Hehe, 3rd level ranger gives diety a subquest! muahahaha Anyways lots of good suggestions so far, but remember I'm looking for games of CHANCE, not skill. examples: cards, dice, shell games, roulette. I'm not looking so much for a way to rules-lawyer myself around his divinity, as I'm looking for a GOOD game, one that I at least have a CHANCE of winning. |
| bomaz05-12-05, 03:38 AM | see who for a year can affekt the world the least, by being a deity in existance he affects the world alot. if he wins this you will have alot of fun i mean what deeds will your chas acomplish every time he grant spells he influence the world. if he lose... this is a game of chance and with his luck he will win. :evillaugh since reality is pretty much about probability. It also means you will have a great time for the year |
| angryman05-12-05, 11:13 PM | Hehe, a group of fifth level characters running around with WAGONS full of platinum are spotted by a red dragon. Being in a particularly generous mood, the dragon suggests that perhaps they should "lighten their load" and leave. If they run real fast, he might only eat one of them. Hell, it doesn't have to be a red dragon, it could be a group of high level anyones. It would make a nice plot hook later to get the money back... |
| MachinaDeus05-13-05, 12:26 PM | Personally, I'd say that since Olidammara is a god of LUCK, then anything he does to cheat at a game of *CHANCE* would simply make him lose LUCK as his domain. Now, he's also the god of Trickery, so anything he can do to say, mislead or distract you from showing up on time to your game so you lose by forfeit is fair. But cheating on the game itself is strictly out. But that'd just be my take. :) |
| Norhg05-13-05, 12:33 PM | Of course, agree to play a game with him but say that regardless if you loose the game or win you want one single thing from him... you want to borrow his portfolio for a day. He might take you with a laughter for your bravery, he might eat you alive because he is hungry or he might steal you blind. Hopefully he will give you his powers for a day, I would think that a nice investment for a wagon of platinium. Wouldn't you too? |
