| Cthulhu-LQ04-23-07, 09:11 AM | In a game I play, I am becoming a lich, mostly part of the story than by my choosing. One question that came up is, how do I heal now? Do I heal when "sleeping"? Is there any way other than buying inflict potions? |
| runestar04-23-07, 10:04 AM | Won't hitting yourself with your touch attack heal you, since it deals negative energy damage?:P |
| JulesCARV04-23-07, 10:13 AM | The negative energy attack might work, although it's dubious from a rules perspective. (It's based on the assumption that it works like Inflict Light Wounds, but not all negative energy attacks are -- Chill Touch, for instance, is a negative energy attack that deals 1d6 damage to the living, but doesn't do any good to the undead (it panicks them)). What class are you? If you're a cleric, of course, you can just cast inflict wounds on yourself, but if you're not a cleric (or another class with inflict wounds), then it's tough. |
| Prator_the_Legendary04-23-07, 10:13 AM | That would work.. Your touch attack would heal you for 1d8+5 pts. of damage each time you used it. Of course, you'll have to put up with all sorts of jibes about touching yourself, but it's worth it. |
| Kouk04-23-07, 11:07 AM | According to the Libris Mortis, Intelligent Undead can "sleep" exactly the same way living things do. The only difference is they call it "Necromantic Healing" but it is just sleep. Ability score damage is regained at 1 point every 24 hours. Keep in mind you will now be destroyed if brought to zero hit points, there is no unconscious. Negative energy damage can heal undead, except chill touch that specifically says otherwise. |
| Pegasos98904-23-07, 11:24 AM | Yeah, undead healing is very easy. You are not only healed by inflict spells but if you take the feat from CArc that lets half the damage of your spells be negative energy. Apply that to any cold spell (you are immune to cold and electricity. You can also achieve this with energy substition: cold) and make sure you are within area of effect too. Let's say you have empowered fireball with energy substition: cold. Should be doable at the level you can be liched. In addition to dealing 15d6 to opponents, you heal yourself half the amount. Okay, that wasn't perfect example because you most of the time don't want to be so near the combat that you can target yourself and enemy at the same time with small AoE spell but the same way can be used with diffrent spells. |
| Cthulhu-LQ04-23-07, 12:10 PM | OK Thanks for the answers! Being Necromancer / Eldritch knight, I can't heal myself with inflict spells. So it's good to know I can still "sleep". I don't have any supplements myself, but I think one of the other players has libris mortis, so I'll ask him to check the rules on undead sleep. Likewise, I didn't know it was possible to change the type of energy... but I don't think any of us has that book, so I'll have to pass on it I guess. But about the lich's touch attack, can I really use it every round to heal 1d8+5 HP? This seems very strong, I can get fully healed within a few rounds at no cost. Touching myself will never have felt so good. |
| malignor04-23-07, 12:22 PM | I'm not too familiar with the Necromancer. But if you have anything from the Planar Binding list, you can just call up any outsider who is a priest of, say, Nerull. Maybe make a new friend you can call upon now & then while you're at it. I'm sure there's a Barghest or Dretch with a class level or two in Cleric. Just construct a temple in the honor of some evil deity or demon lord, and I'm sure you'll get the privilege to get yourself a priestly being you can rely on every day at midnight or something, to show up and inflict negative energy on you. Maybe Orcus is the guy you should be talking to, being all undead and stuff. |
| Aggrenox04-23-07, 12:47 PM | Potions of inflict wounds. I had a Curst Fighter who used to carry around a bandoleer of them. That poor, poor, poor, poor purple worm that swallowed him. |
| aotrscommander04-23-07, 01:01 PM | Assuming you have an intelligence score - a fairly safe assumption! - you do heal naturally (for the given value of 'natural') anyway. Only Undead without an intelligence score don't heal any damage except from outside influence (or Fast Healing). So, aside from potions, you will heal the standard rate for resting (though you don't need to sleep per se) when you get your spells back (1 hit/levelfor 8 hours 2 hits/level for 24 hours). Aside from that, you're in the same boat as everybody else, except you need Inflict, not cure potions! If you're a Sorcerer or have a Cha of 11, it might be worth grabbing a level of Dread Necromancer if you have Heroes of Horror for the Charnel Touch. |

| northern_bear04-23-07, 01:04 PM | Potions of inflict wounds. I had a Curst Fighter who used to carry around a bandoleer of them. That poor, poor, poor, poor purple worm that swallowed him. By the rules, you should be able to use your negative energy touch to heal yourself. But I think that is pretty powerful, and very cheesy. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a first level sorc/wiz spell called "negative energy ray", or something similar, that inflicts negative energy damage as a ray. Ultimately, the Evolved undead template is one of the coolest templates around in my mind (powerful, but without being broken, and lots of good flavour). It provides fast healing, among other things. Of course, you have to be undead for 100 years to aquire it. The dread necromancer class also has a touch attack that deals negative energy damage and can heal undead. The class is generally not that good over all, but it is a good class to use if you want to have an army of undead. |
| green_yawgmoth04-23-07, 03:22 PM | There's a first level spell that does 1d6/2 CL (max 5d6) negative energy damage in a ray. You could very easily use it to heal yourself. There's also a burst which does (iirc) 1d8+CL damage in a 20 ft burst. Not as good for healing just yourself, but good for healing any undead buddies you have, or hurting anyone around you as you heal. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| StevenO04-23-07, 06:44 PM | The easy answer is a lich "heals" just like anything else except that it takes the reverse of "normal" healing spells. |
