How does DR really works? [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-28-05, 10:01 AM I dont seem to be able to understand the rules of DR and hope somebody will explain it to me.

When my pc has DR 10/magic does that mean the first 10 points of damage is "removed" from the calculation, unless the weapon is magical? then the entire amount is damage??

How does that work against spells, are they considered magic? (I know spells are magic, but how about their damage)

11-28-05, 10:02 AM Damage reduction doesn't apply against direct damage from magic spells or psionic powers. That goes for 10/magic or 3/—. If you get hit by a fireball, a magic missile, a ray of frost, you take full damage. Period.

11-28-05, 01:33 PM The number in damage reduction means the amount of damage that is removed from an attack by a weapon, while the name after the slash is the property that a weapon must have to pierce the damage reduction. Damage reduction does not apply against energy damage or damage from most spells and similar abilities. In your example, DR 10/magic means that against a weapon attack, you subtract 10 points of damage from the attack before applying to your Hit Points unless the weapon is magical.

Mind you, if the spell allows a save for lesser damage, that will reduce the amount of damage taken from full. That said, Damage Reduction (DR) has no effect on a spell's damage.
