It's more fun to generate characters and have the possibility of some really good stats by rolling the dice. Point-buy is for those people who just can't get past the fact that Dungeons & Dragons isn't one of the newer role playing systems. Ick. :P

It holds off envy and jealousy, while deterring abuse. Everyone is equal, but can create their own character in whatever manner they desire. So while point buy maintains a restriction, it permits as much creativity within the system as you desire.
