| RedTopHat04-17-07, 10:37 PM | This week I have created my newest character. Why? Well it's a long story. First my Goblin Swashbuckler died, and his body was used to block a water pipe. It sucked, I never saw it coming. Next, my rogue was disliked and couldn't join the party, causing himself to have no choice whatsoever of getting in ( I shouldn't have robbed the Samurai). Now I'm on my halfling wizard, and this has all ensued in the past 3 sessions( out of a total of 5 sessions bi-weekly). Does anyone else fly through characters fast? I don't think this should be happening but it just does... or am I just a crazy player? |
| Pangeon04-17-07, 11:16 PM | Eh, depends. I've had one long running campaign where I stuck with the same character through six levels and a death. (In the same one, we had one player go through three or four.) In my most recent campaign, I've had to replace one character after two sessions (TPKs suck), and another player just had his second death, after about three sessions. (Then again, we're playing Expedition to Castle Ravenloft, so that could have something to do with it...) As for you being a crazy player, who knows? Low levels can be lethal when you only have 11 or 12 HP. Edit: Quote: "What is one man's money, but another man's money?" Oh, man, that's awesome. |
| Kouk04-17-07, 11:38 PM | Well, you didn't say how your goblin died. Going through new characters is a function of the lethality of the campaign (sometimes the boredom of the player which kills the character). If in all circumstances you did something incredibly stupid with your character, and everyone else is still fine and alive, then it is most likely you. |
| Adric_the_Commoner04-18-07, 12:18 AM | It's a running joke in my group that I go through my characters like Klenex. I've gone through roughly a dozen in the last year. But that's usually because I kill my character's off out of boredom. For one character, I literally asked another player to duel to the death. He accepted and I ended up breaking up the D6s. My DM has basically come to accept that he often needs to have me just come riding along and join the players. |
| celtredleg04-18-07, 12:29 AM | Robbing somebody else in the party is a good way to get dead. And it is a good way for them to not trust your next charecter as well. I dont know if you are a crazy player, but at least in one instance you where not a smart player. |
| Krompt04-18-07, 12:33 AM | My group is pretty much a split when it comes to characters. On one hand There are 'Altaholics', in one campaign in which we meet every weekend since January (a few weekends to say the least)... One has made a new character out of boredum...and some of his deaths are actually quite humerous. Another character he has flicker tastes and usually gets a new character every month. And then there are the ones that are anything but. Out of the 5 of us that play PCs in this same campaign, 1 of Us has switched characters once and that was because he was tired of being the 'fighter'/Leader of the party and switched from Knight to Bard. I myself have died 7 times and havent switched characters (the True Res fund starts to come in hand over time) and the last one he doesnt...play enough to switch characters lol. though my DM has made a bit of a joke saying that if he can kill me 3 more times I'll have visited all the chaotic and good aligned planes (not CG, Chaotic aligned planes and all the Good Aligned Planes) I get to become an Outsider ^^. All but one of my deaths have been to failed death attacks, the last one was me being stupid running into battle with under 5% of my HP remaining. |
| Kojiro James04-18-07, 12:41 AM | My characters might as well be immortal. I'm terribly lucky with mine. |
| Thubby04-18-07, 12:54 AM | i now almost never lose a character. none too long ago, though, i used to go through them like candy. i litteraly went through 8 in 1 session once. through no fault of my dm, me, or my fellow players. 1 just got critted by a monster and was low on hp. next was a rogue who completely botched a disable. wizard got AoE. and so on, we were laughing so hard by the end. turned out for the best though, becasue i very quickly found what worked, what i liked, and what needed covering. |
| Khoran04-18-07, 01:01 AM | I've died once and was captured once thanks to deus ex machina both thanks to natural 1s on saves. |
| Nebo04-18-07, 04:36 AM | One game I play in is extremely lethal. One player went through 5 characters in 6 sessions, 3 of the others went through 4 each over a few more sessions. Two of us survived for ages until I decided to retire my character. The killing spree seems to have slowed down now, it only really happens when someone does something really dumb, which, unfortunately, is more often than it should be. |
| MyNameForevermore04-18-07, 12:32 PM | Heh, funny you should ask. My DM is running a horribly lethal campaign with us in which only one of the original party remains alive, and this is only due to excellently worked plot devices. Basically, we have a PC kill count on a sheet of paper. It's up to 19 for one campaign. |
| Zumarai04-18-07, 12:40 PM | My characters might as well be immortal. I'm terribly lucky with mine. …Or your DM is fudging? Just kidding! |
| CryoSilver04-18-07, 01:55 PM | I either keep one character for almost the whole campaign, or they die their first session in. |
| Zandolit04-18-07, 03:41 PM | I played one character for nearly a year. She died and was brought back once, dropped really low in hitpoints but was still conscious and could heal herself several times, and was once dropped to -9 in a single round but was healed by an NPC before the round was over. The only reason I stopped playing her was because the campaign ended, and she went on to lead a happy life. One other player had just one character that whole campaign. Several others got bored with their characters and switched; sometimes the original character died and sometimes not. In unexpected deaths: one other PC was brought back from the dead, and several other characters died but the players decided they preferred to make new ones. That was the longest campaign I've played (not by my choice; the other players always get bored and want to do something different) but in general my characters tend to survive pretty well. I wouldn't enjoy a campaign where my characters were dying right and left; I don't find a character very interesting till I've played them awhile and get attached. :) |
| RedTopHat04-18-07, 09:58 PM | As for you being a crazy player, who knows? Low levels can be lethal when you only have 11 or 12 HP. Quote: "What is one man's money, but another man's money?" Oh, man, that's awesome. Well, you didn't say how your goblin died. If in all circumstances you did something incredibly stupid with your character, and everyone else is still fine and alive, then it is most likely you. The low levels are hard, especially if you running low health characters. The quote was me trying to get out of trouble with the samurai, after ******* him off. My Goblin: We were traveling through a sewer killing rats for the town. Me and the Samurai opened a chest( we went without the rest of the party, and it is a evil game) and split the loot. Afterwards when the rest of the party came, and we blocked off the room we were in which was now filling in with water. It was coming in really slow so we had time, and the Azer party member who noticed it was an open chest asked me about it. He rolled and tried to intimidate me, and I laughed at his failed roll(he has a cha 3). He then tried to punch me and missed. In the heat of the moment, the Gnoll of our party began to attack me, and the druid of our party, distracted shot off her crossbow in my general direction. The Samurai wasn't paying attention, or caring. I was down to negatives in the two hits, then the druid finished me off. I had just leveled up to, but didn't get to sleep so I never leveled. They used my body to try and block the pipe.... it worked for a while. Was it stupid for my character to steal from the samurai? Maybe. He did it because he was trying to find people who would be willing to fight, and he needed some cash. Probably one of my stupider ideas. |
| Nall_The_Azure_Guardian04-18-07, 11:52 PM | Normally I'd say my characters last at least five levels and they tend to be the last one standing in a TPK I'd say its how you were playing your characters, but thats part of the game I remember once my group had a boy that insisted on playing a raptor until the DM broke down and let him do it, little did he suspect my Dwarven fighter had an irrational fear of giant lizards, his character lasted exactly four rounds so I wouldn't feel that badly. |
| Kojiro James04-19-07, 12:48 AM | …Or your DM is fudging? Just kidding! My DM is not a fudger. Trust me on that. Other PCs in his campaigns have died very grisly deaths. I either get very lucky by my own rolls, or choose decisions that don't lead to crunchy, squishy, burny doom. |
