I'm starting a new character at 11th level, a wizard. Now my question is:
How many spells is it normal for a wizard to have in his spellbook at this level?
Just the two learned at each level? Do you buy scrolls and write them into your spellbook pregame? Does the rules say anything on this?

Prehelp thanks :P

You should be allowed to do it pre game. Otherwise, your level 11 wizard is going to have to take a month off as soon as the adventure starts to get up to speed.

There are rules in place for typical costs for access to spellbooks and for scribing.

There are rules, or guidelines, for starting wealth. Spells beyond what you get for free should be assessed as starting wealth.

It is up to your DM, but I just price each extra spell like I copied it from a borrowed spellbook (50 gp/level) and then scribed it into my book (100 gp/level.)

How many people have varies. But for me, I typically invest ~15-20% of my starting wealth in extra spells.

I'm not aware that there is a limit to the number of spells a character has access to in a spellbook, only the number of spells castable by level and modifiers.

You can buy scrolls and add them to your spellbook, remembering that each spell takes up that many pages, a first level spell uses 1 page, a 3rd level spell takes up 3 pages and so on, UNLESS you buy a Boccob's Blessed Book. The book has 1000 pages, no 25gp material component cost, and IF you have PRC I can't remember :banghead: right now, there is an ability at 2nd level that allows you to use only 1 page per spell.
1000 page spellbook with 1000 spells. :dancin: :schemes: :mage:

Check the PHB for Arcane Magical Writings in chapter 10 and search the Spells posts for Boccob's Blessed Book for the PRC.

As LSMFT says you only get two FREE spells for each level for your wizard. After that you need to spend your gold to aquire new spells as determined by the DM. That 150 gp/spell level total price seems to be about right for any additional spells you may want in your book when the game starts.

Geometer is the name you were looking for.

You can have a Baccob’s book full with 1000 spells, but that is going to be a very, very expensive toy. Close to 200,000 worth of spells. I’m a pretty nice DM, but you aren’t starting with that.

As for typical amount- well, my wizard is kinda skimpy due to low funds. She has about fifteen first level, fifteen second level, then the number drops to six to ten.

LadyDM is referring to the Geometer, a prestige class in Complete Arcane. I'd highly recommend a two-level dip to reduce scribing costs a ton. It reduces costs so much, in fact, that you don't have any real need to buy a Boccob's Blessed Book.

Lets see.. a blessed book, which negates the cost of scribing spells into it (great magic item) -- even with the markup the DM put on it, I think it's going to pay for itself..

My level 18 wizard has: 116 spells from 1st to 9th level. Mostly 1-5, but at least 8-9 spells at each of 6-9..

Wow. I hadn't realized that I'd added so many. Anyway, wizard's an archmage, and one thing the DM did was rule that while she's at one of the Universities, she's got free and unlimited access to the reference books. Since she's got a Blessed Book, she takes full advantage of that when she gets the chance.

The only thing limit to the wizard's library is page space; each spell takes one page per spell level, and the standard book only has 100 pages. Outside of that, a wizard could conceive a library of an infinite number of spells, provided he can spend the monetary and personal effort (i.e. exp) into scribing.

I've been in many Home Brew and Standard Rules adventures, I must be lucky that I only have to buy the spells at DMG prices (or sometimes inflated) and then scribe them into our "virtual" books. We are still required to find a lab and scribe, but nothing more.
