3 x lvl 1 PC's
Vs
15 Kobolds + 1 CR2 "Leader Kobold"

Killed them all but one ran off to report to his boss *sigh*

As far as i know they are standard kobolds, they had roughly 4 hp and had an AC of around 15 armed with slings and short spears.
What are your calculations for the XP for this encounter?

That's up to your DM.

There could be more, there could be less.

Kobold, MM standard, is a CR ¼. To a 1st level party one is worth 300 * ¼ = 75xp. Since there were three participating characters the Kobold is worth 25xp to a participating first level character.

Since there were 15 but one escaped to stir up trouble for you, I'd award you only 14*25 = 350 xp each for the kobolds. If the monster had fled never to return, you would get the xp for him too, but since he's retreated for reinforcements you'll have to get his xp next time.

Kobold Leader, one of, CR2. To a 1st level party this challenge is worth 600xp. Divide that by the number of participating characters is 200xp per character.

Total 550xp per character.

The DM is entitled to assess the circumstances of the encounter and decide whether the circumstances favoured one side or the other and modify the xp up or down somewhat. This is fairly subjective, is entirely up to the DM, and since you told us nothing of the circumstances we can't gauge them anyway.

The sort of thing I'd want to know is the circumstances of the battle, and whether you are better equipped than the standard 1st level characters. For example, if your tank is clomping around in fullplate, that's a huge advantage at low level.

So my answer is 550xp per character, subject to reviewing the circumstances of the battle.

575. Why? Making the enemy retreat is overcoming its challenge. Not all challenges are overcome by making them a fine red mist.

We each got 650 xp.
I thought he had given us too much, but i can see that it was a circumstance bonus of some description :)

The kobolds we killed were a hunting party sent to destroy and enslave a couple of small villages (not that our PC's knew any of this) and we had left on our mission without any healing abilities, DM said it was his mistake due to rushing us out of town and into the fray :) We also had some really shite rolls but still managed to takem down (go the samurai's intimidate, -2 is heaps at lvl 1!!)

Thanks for the breakdown there Merestil :)

Of course its up to the DM Sinis. *rolls eyes*

He was playing the odds. Many instances of topics like this are a player looking for people on the internet to tell him he's right and his DM was wrong wrong wrong so he can back himself up in a petty, irrelevant dispute. Because we're all such worldly D&D players, we see things like this coming, and don't want our names associated with someone's ploy to ruin a game.

Asking what the standard by-the-rules XP award would have been, and providing a short comment like, "I think my DM gave us too much XP," would have gotten more accurate replies.

It also would have gotten replies like, "You think your DM gave you too much XP? And you're going to argue with him? Is something wrong with you?!" :P

As Kernath wrote, your question comes up on these boards more often because a player or group of players post a topic in a fury that their DM shorted them some colossal amount of XP, owed to them because of their depthless wit and monumental valour in combat, and how it's the most unjust thing in the world, and that by the power vested in the slavering rabble that the internet can be, we the forum ought to right things.

You're probably right though. It would have been better of me to write out the XP calculation just below my two-liner. I believe Merestil Haye has the right of the mechanical XP gain from goblins who are situationally on even footing and were supposed to be killed, rather than negotiated with, or run away from.

Edit: Sunic Flames has an alternative number. It depends on whether the objective of the encounter was to scour the kobolds from the planet, or to merely "defeat" them. If scouring, 550 XP, if "defeat" 575.
