| psylo04-08-06, 06:18 PM | Currently I am playing in a spelljammer campaign using 3.0 classes and rules.... this is a currently another conversation that I am trying to convert my grp to the 3.5 rules system. I am concerned and attemptin to get some idea on how to approach a dm with a differing approach to character concepts and play styles as my own. The question arises from a call to my dm saying that I would like to try playing a mystic theurge, seeing as the group is lacking a healer or a nuker I thought that this was a good idea. I know the rule with PrC's is that the DM can allow or disallow any that she or he see's fit. Now the DM is thinking about disallowing this PrC as my intent was to aim for it from the get go of the campaign. The differing character design idea is that I like to plan from level 1 what I want a character to be and his belief is that you shoud progress in character levels from what happens. Just differing styles and I was hoping for some idea's on how to approach a DM with such a style. I had a druid in this campaign once and within the first three sessions it was evident that he would not work with the other party members character concepts so I am trying to build something that will help fill in the weak spots on the group and will work well with what we have. As for the option of finding another DM I am in an area that finding a DM is like hunting for a needle in a haystack. There are others who know how and want to but at the time being there is one who has established himself as the DM. while everyone else is content to follow him. |

(Mystic Theurge) Also be sure to let him know that your character won't be locked into a rut, since he should never be locked into a rut. Your intention might be to become a mystic theurge, but things happening in the campaign world should be able to change his mind. My current character, for example, started out heading towards spellsword and/or eldritch knight. In game, however, he built a golem, then another, and now, I'm 3 levels past where i was going to take spellsword and have instead branched into clerics so I can concentrate on building bigger & better constructs. :) |

I would inform him of the simple fact that people have dreams, ambitions, and goals which are important to them and that may have been formed quite early in life (see: before their entry in the campaign as a character). I would then proceed to ponder, out loud, what shortcomings made him unable to perceive such a simple fact. Suffice it to say, I don't associate with people who are at all sensitive about their shortcomings. If you do, you may want to skip this step. ;) |

Minimal skills, no extra abilities, no bonus feats, nothing. If he is still vaccilating on the subject, and you have to build your character, I would suggest that rather than splitting between intelligence and wisdom you aim your best stat at charisma? Then you can start as either a Favoured Soul or Sorcerer and split later from one to the other. This means you would have to be 8th rather than 6th level before you qualified for mystic theurge, but you would have a stronger spellcasting stat. For feats, there is one called Practiced Caster in Complete Devine (where you will also find favoured soul) that is a must: you can add up to four levels (if you have four levels) to your effective caster level if you have four levels in another class. Take it twice and your caster level equals your actuall level for both divine and arcane magic. For deities, I suggest Boccob, Mystra, Isis or some other deity whose portfollio includes magic. |
| DM_Greatness04-09-06, 01:11 PM | Hate to tell you this brother, but Spelljammer is silly. Also, you seem like you have a sound mind, and were willing to fill up roles that the party need by playing a healer before (druid) and then changing over to something else the group needed (healer/nuker). But, your DM doesn't seem willing... The Truth: It sounds time for you to grab the reins, and start DMing yourself. Your time have come! I pass unto thee the torch of DMness! :king: |
| psylo04-11-06, 11:01 PM | as is I have dropped the goal of mystic thuerge and went with a straight healer/buffer cleric. I was brought to this decision by the dm and another player trying to "fix" the MT and nerfing it to ubplayability. It works out for the group and hopefully it is just as much fun as it was during the first encounter. DM may of made a mistake when 2 level 5's fighter and cleric where able to soundly school a pair of cr 7's.... don't think I could of done that with a MT |
