How to get my dwarven cleric/dwarven defender the ability to use hammers... [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi all.
Just wondering the best way to go about this. I'm working up a character idea for an eventual 10/10 Cleric/Dwarven Defender. He'll basically be a bastion of defense for the party. Not a huge healer, but a heck of a buffer and holder-of-the-line.
I want him to be able to use and throw hammers, like all good dwarves do. But, clerics do not gain the ability to use hammers (none of the hammers are simple weapons).
I have a couple options:

1. Wait until I take that first level of DwDef, as they gain proficiency with all martial weapons.

2. Take Weapon Proficiency: Martial as a feat at first level.

3. Not use hammers.

The real debate is that I need three feats to become a DwDef. As a cleric, I also will not have the BAB for the PrC until level 10, so at 11 I can take my first level in DwDef. 10 levels is a LONG time to wait to be able to use a thematic element of a character.
By level 10, a cleric has 4 feats. Three of these are taken up by Dodge, Endurance and Toughness (pre-reqs for the PrC). Using the fourth feat for Martial Weapon Proficiency seems like a lot to give up. I'd had my eye on the Divine Shield feat from Complete Warrior.

Any ideas?

Either:

-Take War as a domain.
Or
-Ask your GM if the campaign can use the "Weapon groups" varient in Unearthed Arcana.

war domain only works if your diety has warhammer as a favored weapon. If in forgotten realms, find a god that has the metal domain. The metal domain grants free proficiency and focus with your choice of hammer. Dumathoin has the metal domain, I believe moradin does as well.

Moradin's favored weapon is the hammer, but he doesn't have the war domain.

Surely your DM is flexible enough to grant you proficiency with your racial weapon for free (or traed it for something - trade all simple weapons for all types of hammer for example).

I traded my shield proficiency for polearms just the other day :D

Right- use "weapon groups" from UA. There is also an FR feat that gives you ALL martial weapons.

or loss a level of cleric and take a level of fighter (dwarves prefered class)

Beg leniency from your GM.

Take a level of fighter

Spend the feat (not good as it only gets you 1 martial weapon and you want several).
