| Tiefling_Warlock10-07-06, 11:06 PM | Here is my problem: My DM always seems to have my bases get found. I need help hidind them. Also most of the time the people who knew about it and might even maintain it run off with it...all of it. Yes my base. I need suggestions on bases mainly on: Where, how to maintain, how to hide. Any suggestions? |
| Tempest Stormwind10-07-06, 11:16 PM | 1) Keep it mobile. Moving base >> hidden base. 2) Self-sufficient is nice, but secondary to mobile. 3) Use Leadership or similar to keep it staffed; they're loyal so long as you don't lower your Leadership rating. Examples of this done properly can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=543260). They're a bit more extreme than need be, though. Of course, the simplest solution is to SPEAK TO THE DM. If you want to maintain a base, and he keeps undermining it without letting you intervene in some way, then he doesn't want to tell you "No, you can't have a base" or he's power tripping on breaking what you establish. (I'm curious why it's imperitive your character's base be secret. Hell, in all the games I've been in that have had a base of some sort, it's been common knowledge where we were -- two were on notorious ships that had a reputation as being undefeatable (one was a scaled-down version of the first one described in that link), and the third (right now) is in the middle of a populated area in Sharn, a huge city in Eberron.) |
| Mandarbgrim10-07-06, 11:27 PM | Look up FM 7-8 on google. Flip to Chapter 3, Section 5. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-07-06, 11:54 PM | I need it secret because everone hates me (or at least it seems like it) and the BBEGs can find it if it isn't. i have tried mobile...it sailed away a couple days later, without me. |
| Keevo_Darkwood10-07-06, 11:57 PM | I have but one suggestion, I'm afraid. "You have no chance to survive make your time." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_Wing_%28translations%29) :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh |

Pay special attention to number 3, above. And again, speak to your DM -- there's no way your base would leave without you unless either you were treating your subordinates like **** (and they had no reason to stay with you under those conditions), or the DM has it in for you. If you're using Leadership, neither of these should be an issue -- and if your cohort remains in charge of the thing, it can even make some daring rescues if you're in trouble (happened to us more than once; this was where the ship's reputation as being undefeatable came in handy). Another idea is to keep it secret by keeping it public. Our most recent base is in the middle of a densely populated area in a city that most people would consider wise to leave alone, since destroying it would rally most of the continent against you. If he knows where it is but can't act on anything, then it's as good as hidden. I'd still suggest mobile, though. By the way, Mandarbgrim, that's an interesting read. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 01:07 AM | The problem is mainly that I don't want to spend time (or I don't have time to before they run away witht he base) to get a quality staff. Alo, if I had the base in public, the multitudes of thieves guilds would be crawling threw the windows before I could cut the ribbon. |

Alo, if I had the base in public, the multitudes of thieves guilds would be crawling threw the windows before I could cut the ribbon. Then your DM doesn't want you to have a base, and equally doesn't want to tell you so. I'd ask him about it expressly. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 11:38 AM | I have and it doesn't seem he is purposefully trying to screw it over but more that he sees something wrong and takes it to the conclusion that the base goes boom. Example: I was playing a pirate based D&D. I got a ship but the men on it only follow me because I killed half of them single handedly. My DM and I are talking and he says that they will mutany soon because they don't like me. I say ok. When we reach port I get everyone off the ship saying I am hiring and to meet me in the local tavern to sign up again. Then I pay the guards extra to guard the boat particlaraly well. A couple hors later noone signs up and I wonder why. I look out the window to my ship sailing off. Aparently the old crew bribed the guards and ran off with the ship. |

So, NPCs (under his control) bribed other NPCs (under his control) better than you could (note: as pirate captain, you control more resources than they do) to screw you over. And he's not purposefully trying to do it? Odd, that. Seriously, though, there are other ways. Rather than win them over by single-handed combat, instead challenge their captain (or champion) to a duel (expect him to cheat; pirates aren't generally known for being trustworthy. You should be both strong and crafty in combat, making it abundantly clear that you are superior to him). When he's defeated, pay the crew more (even if it's a one-time bonus, although a wage increase is superior) and promise them something they'd like (i.e. a mighty haul) which you then lead them to victory on. Pirates are like mercenaries; appeals to the wallet are distinctly superior to appeals on their lives. OR! If you insist on doing the evil thing, find a pirate ship and repeat what you did, but either kill or turn over to the law the remainder of the crew. Hire a fresh crew from port and spend some time refitting the ship to look different and possibly even carry a new name (some sailors might look at you funny for doing this, as it's typically a breach of tradition, so you might want to do it before hiring a crew). A variant of this is to invest the capital in building your own ship -- this is what we did in our game. The vast majority of the crew in our case owed the party their lives (they were former privateers sold to slavery that we liberated). Being privateers (mercenaries) in our pay and in a debt of gratitude, they were quite loyal -- which was amplified when we swore to never attack their former homeland (this became a distinguishing mark in our reputation, and we eventually managed to convince that nation to hire us repeatedly for lucrative deals when we weren't out on our own missions). This assumes your DM is being honest about your methods simply being silly, and that you still want a ship. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 12:39 PM | I did kill the captain and 10 other guys at once although not in a duel. Even after I offered them more pay the other guy who took over the ship offered them that *and* a higher chance of survival (due to the fact he knew what he was doing). If I tried to turn the pirates into the authorities they would kill me. |

If I tried to turn the pirates into the authorities they would kill me. 1) You're able to single-handedly kill half the crew and you're worried about them attacking you when you turn them in? 2) If you have no idea what the hell you're doing on a ship, hire someone who does. (In fact, look up the difference between a ship's "captain" and the ship's "master"; Wikipedia's a passable resource on this.) 3) I still would suggest replacing the entire crew. 4) Where's the rest of your team? |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 12:59 PM | 1) I exagerated, I killed half of their main combatants. There is still about 30 other people who can fight sorta. Also iI got lucky in the first fight. I am also out of explosives. 2) I was doing that when they ran off with my ship. 3) I was trying that when they ran off with the ship. 4) It was a solo camp. Also the ship thing was an example of what has happened. I am starting a new Camp. with 4-5 other people in about 3 weeks and i am going to blatantly rip Rickiel's Raz character with abadon (different name maybe a couple more backstory twists, new ideals and no one will know). I need a base for the following: Licking wounds, hiding alchemical materials, ink and spellsbooks, stolen spellbooks, food and water, extra sets of essential and stolen things that haven't been sold yet. |
| Tempest Stormwind10-08-06, 01:08 PM | Okay, 100% of what you've said shows that your DM wants to screw you over and won't admit it. Solo game without feedback? NPC interaction beyond the scope of your abilities when you're powerless to intervene? Repeated failures? Dude, this guy's power tripping. You could have established the world's foremost fortress and he'll find a way to make people mutiny. You could have bought a house and he'll have it burn down. You could have a freaking pocket demiplane and he'd have the Githyanki invade. Shoot him with a hammer and be done with it. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 01:18 PM | You are probably right but I *know* he isn't trying to do this. Basically he believes I can do whatever I want as long as it makes sense and he will try to make the response that makes the most sense to my actions. It's just most of his worlds have lots of mean people in them. I also get over my head a lot. This all happend before 4th level. Also I tend to get power happy. P.S. I can't get a new DM due to the fact that he is the only good one I know. Also I can't see the FM 7-8 thing so if someone could post the actual section here or PM it to me it would help. |

Give you pointers and so on. Otherwise, he's using the Gygaxian Gambit -- the perfect example of which is "Room A contains a hidden amulet. Ten floors down there is an invincible golem ten levels above the party, who can only be defeated with the amulet (which destroys him instantly)." You don't learn just by getting slapped on the wrist when you do something wrong. Ask him to show you what proper thinking and planning *is* in his world. I've given some suggestions. Also I can't see the FM 7-8 thing so if someone could post the actual section here or PM it to me it would help.Install Acrobat Reader and try again. It's not about establishing permanent bases; its about setting up objective rally points (i.e. staging grounds) in a military environment. Very interesting, but not the same as establishing a permanent base. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 01:48 PM | I have tried re-installing acrobat and it doesn't work. Anyways I'll talk with him but I don't want to bug him now (he's very buisy) but I do want to work on some floorplans/basic ideas. I figure that because I'm starting at 2nd level I will say that I have paid, oh say 100gp to a disreputable carpenter and his buds to set up and make the floorplans for a house inside a nearby cliff. Basically as I adventure I will give him money (and check up on the progress) as I adventure. Now I picked a disreputable carpenter figureing there won't be any paperwork and thus no paper trail for a BBEG to follow. Once it's done I'll put in multiple magical traps in to stop intruders and then move in. Once I become powerful enough I'll add in some undead to cook and clean etc. Any suggestions? |
| DarkNick10-08-06, 03:20 PM | Dude, a disreputable carpenter will just screw you over. I think you should not waste the investment if all that will happen is the DM takes it away again. You don't need it. Wait to high level when you you have the resources to make it work. In the meantime hire some furnished rooms, don't leave any gear there. Buy a bag of holding to keep all your wizard junk in, use spells like rope trick. Or buy one of those instant fortresses that you can take with you. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 03:22 PM | I can't help but note that a bad of holding and an instant fotress cost gobs. Also if I have rope trick I could just tell my undead to build it. Solution: The disreputable carpenter is my brother. |
| Tempest Stormwind10-08-06, 03:32 PM | The fact that they cost far more than you can afford should be a clue that you shouldn't try this until higher levels -- or you have the Landlord feat (which gives you bonus money expressly for buying strongholds, and doubles any payment you make out of your own pocket for strongholds). Besides. You're already breaking Rule One above -- keep it mobile. From what you've said about the DM, he's likely to say there's barbarians in the mountains, or the spot's hit with an avalanche. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 03:40 PM | I want to have a base as unreasonable and unintelligent as it seems. All I want is a place to do some experiments and keep my things, that's it. I am not saying that we can't move around with a base but rather we can go to it if we want. Also, my DM wouldn't do that. There's no reason for it. |

I am not saying that we can't move around with a base but rather we can go to it if we want. Then why not simply ask your DM if your character can start with a house? Or, for that matter, start in one of his interesting organizations that happens to have an HQ?Also, my DM wouldn't do that. There's no reason for it.Right, like there was no reason for his NPCs to speak to his other NPCs behind your back. |
| Tiefling_Warlock10-08-06, 04:10 PM | Wow. Just Wow. I never tought of actually asking him to let me be put in an organization that won't backstab me and that I'm on reasonable terms with. Thanks. But still, sooner or later I won't be on reasonable terms with them or I want my own place so suggestions for defences and the like are welcome. Also they had a reason, they felt that one NPC was a better Captain than me so they talked to the others. |
| Magus Gar Kan10-10-06, 02:39 PM | Get a magic item with Mordenkainens magnificint mansion, there you go portable base and nearly impregnable. Heck you're a warlock right? you can make the Item when you get high enough level. |
| mearrin6910-10-06, 04:46 PM | I have but one suggestion, I'm afraid. "You have no chance to survive make your time."
