| Scipion Emilien03-02-05, 09:17 PM | Dunno if i had to post that on the optimisation board, but they seem more occupe to answer to class X/I/S/U/Y/D... So we used a point buy system like the one in the dunger master guide with 30 point. Now the problem his, how can I use a longsword without doubling my strengh and dex stats? I know i could use a rapier, but a longsword is more elven-like in my opinion. And another little question, why in the hell elven use longsword instead of more finessable weapon?? |
| Encard03-02-05, 09:36 PM | Err... Why couldn't you use a longsword without doubling Str and Dex? Weapons don't have Str and Dex requirements to wield, and besides, Dex doesn't have any effect on how well you can use a longsword. As for why elves use longswords instead of finessable weapons... They do use more finessable weapons. That's why you can get the rapier proficiency, along with bow proficiencies. Besides, didn't you say yourself that you considered tjhe longsword to be a more elven-themed weapon than rapier? :P |
| Scipion Emilien03-02-05, 09:38 PM | Yes it s true, but on the others hand i considered the combination of longsword/light armor to be a little users-unfriendly (to not say lethal). But this is what most of elves do! So i want to know why and how they make it. Do you know where i can find sample of elven warrior NPC? |
| Cold Napalm03-02-05, 10:19 PM | Look at races of the wild...they have elven finessable longsword like weapons. Exotic but hey, they're fun. Also the champion of corollian is nice for an elf in plate. FYI, I think longsword are hoirribly unelven. Very ungraceful weapons. Effective, fast and brutal yes...graceful...nope. Scimitar are MUCH more graceful weapons then longsword. |
| Jayr03-03-05, 10:36 AM | Actually, lots of stereotypical elves use rapiers. They're light and graceful, and elves gain automatic proficiency. The generic elven warrior does use a longsword, but with his low ability scores it would be pointless for him to use a rapier- he only has 2 scores above 11! He's in the Monster Manual under e for elf. I suggest you go for the rapier if you're a fighter, your dilemma is totally valid; longsword + light armor isn't a very good combo. |
| Moon-Lancer03-03-05, 12:10 PM | take racal familearty in compleat warior. This will give you elven light blade+thin blade+cort blade in one feat. Then you can chose what you want to use. they are very elven weapons. sorry for spelling. |
| PurdueDave03-03-05, 01:30 PM | Elves aren't too hard to make into warrior-types. The only real downside they have is the -2 CON. I'd just come up with a general concept (knight in shining armor, versatile archer, etc.) and choose to fit. The previous post was correct that Champion of Corellon (RotW) rocks. |
| Callista03-03-05, 03:11 PM | Well, with that +2 DEX, elves really make better archers or finesse fighters than STR-based fighters. They also make really good Rogues, though I prefer halflings thanks to their bonus to Hide and Move Silently. It's certainly possible to make a STR-based elf with heavy armor--put your highest stat in STR, next in CON, and you can put a mid-level stat in DEX because of the +2 since you'll be wearing heavy armor anyway. Get a bow that lets you use that strength, and you'll be ready to go. However, for an elf fighter, I would suggest keeping your mobility high and either proceeding up the ranged-attack chain, or going for finesse and sticking rapiers or daggers through folks. Some combination of Rogue and Fighter could work as well--start as Rogue for the skill points, and remember that a Rogue need not be a thief; he can be a dextrous duelist as well--if you're willing to sacrifice some HP and BAB for those skill points, especially in things like Tumble and Bluff (for feinting). The extra feats from the Fighter class should work in your favor; you'll be able to get neat things like Spring Attack and Rapid Shot; and your BAB will be higher than a rogue's. Some points in Use Magic Device should allow you to do more things than the average fighter (once you get to high enough levels that you succeed a decent amount of times), since you have access to minor amounts of magic as well--something rather elf-like, IMO. Drawbacks, though: You'll have to keep those classes close to each other in order to keep away from multiclassing penalties, and that hampers your flexibility a little. In addition, you'll want decent stats in DEX, CON, INT, and CHA--four out of six stats--and that's rather hard to do. Beware the "jack of all trades" syndrome. Good luck. |
