Ok here's what's up in the world we're currently playing in.

The world is overrun with BBEG's, yep plural. And they're all organized, well.
The apacalypse has come and gone and apparently all the good guys left town for a more pleasant dimension. There are demons gating in everywhere, even underwater (which incidentally includes most of the planet since the aboleth somehow caused the oceans to flood everywhere).

Our PC's can't even figure out what is the main source of evil, much less defeat it, and now some Balor has a new toy that lets him switch large sections (square mile or so) of hell with parts of the prime material. Even if we could slay the Balor and get the artifact, (not easy since he's hiding inside the keep of a Lord of Hell) we still can't use it because each time it's used a new expendable portion must be made for the artefact that is crafted out of actual souls.

Our DM keeps hinting that there are horrible evil outsiders that know the answer to our problem and for a few favors might tell us. But none of our characters is evil in the slightest so we can't see doing the bidding of some evil guy as any real sort of solution.Besides, why would they want to fix the world.

We're starting to get a bit depressed with the whole scenario since we can't ever seem to win, and no matter what we try it just ends up causing more trouble than the original problem. Any suggestions?

sounds like your DM is running a Horror campaign....

anyway. the world is over run with evil of all breeds correct? well then you have to think of working for some evils like this. The world is captured by evil so now the evil forces will fight each other for power. So the likely favors you would have to do would involve destroying or screwing up other evil beings. the idea of stopping evils plans is likely a good point to bring up when makeing decisions to do the favors or not, but you also have to think of this. How would other evil beings react to haveing one of there own hireing good people?

So you could, in theory, get the information you need, beat down some evil guys, all while setting up your supposid boss for backlash from the other BBEGs of the world, and when that happens you steal the artifact, kill the balor, and use his evil corrupted soul to fix all the damage done to the realm your charactors call home.

You might want to consider telling your DM how you feel. Sounds like your not having fun at all.

A form of lycanthropy that forces a change to good?Were-bear or were-lion springs to mind.Scratch as many people as possible and sell the idea as a way of being superpowered?

The DM sounds like he probably has a specific idea for how he wants this campaign to go. You'd be in a better position to judge than I would, but that's how it looks from here. If that's the case, then as long as you're playing under this DM it's probably best to figure out what that way is, and stick to it insofar as in-character roleplay allows.

Campaign

If you're trying to figure out how to justify your char working with fiends, consider this: They own the world now. But as I recall, the fiends are at each others' throats, with Baatezu and Tanar'ri trying to slaughter each other in the Blood War. If both sides are active on your world at the same time, it's probably become a new battlefield. If not, the other side wants to be, and is probably looking for a way in.

The Balor you describe is a Tanar'ri, a Chaotic Evil fiend. If he's got a superweapon like that, his enemies probably either want it or want to destroy it. The Baatezu are Lawful Evil, and while they are vile and depraved beyond mortal imagining they honor their side of a bargain. Find a way to ally with them temporarily. Get a really good lawyer to look over any contract you draw up, and keep in mind that you're both looking to double-cross each other ... you don't want them to have the weapon, you want to destroy it, and if they aren't stupid they know that's what you want. So once the Balor is defeated, all bets are off.

The Yugoloths are Neutral Evil fiends. Whatever you do, do not ally with them. Don't even listen to what they have to say ... at least, that's the approach that would work where I'm from. Depending on your DM's portrayal, your mileage may vary, and any or all of this advice may be inapplicable. Use your own discretion.

Depending on my character level I'd go and have a little tet-a-tet with one of those fiends and carefully explain to him that he has to tell me what I want to know. Preferably while said fiend is suspended over a pool of holy water with celestial piranas in it.

At least if my character was good.

My mercenary would first try to figure out how he can get paid for saving the world. and if the fiends wouldn't offer more.

If the DM keeps hinting at these fiends, then it seems like there's no other choice, swallow your pride and talk to them, if it's the difference between saving the world and having hell on earth...material plane than your character just has to make that choice. The DM is obviously trying to make this your only choice. Look the point is even if you get your hands a little dirty in the process I'm sure that the commoners of the world will still thank you if you restore it back to normal

I have a strong urge, when seeing this thread, to answer thusly:

You have to save the cheerleader, duh.

Well, I'm a little concerned over:

"Slay the Balor...inside the keep of a Lord of Hell". Suggests that the Blood War isn't working in a form I understand, or maybe its meaningless.

Talking with the fiends--be prepared to diplome like you've never diplomed before, as you know these guys are all out to screw you (Yugoloths most of all, but be warned)

As a more interesting alternative, why not trying to get outside help---or settle for a second alternative and simply leave this forsaken world.
