This SEEMS to be the best forum to post this in...so I have a quick question if somebody doesn't mind answering.

I know a level 1 char gets more xp then a level 2 char in the same combat (say fighting a CR2 creature). But...if I'm playing a level 1 char who is Githzerai (only LA+1, its a toned down Githy) does my character count as 1st or 2nd level when calculating XP costs? Thanks :)

The LA adds to the characters class levels for determining how XP is awarded and how much is needed for advancement. Your class 1 + 1 LA may only have skills, hp, and such as a 1st level character but should be treated as 2nd level when determining encounter difficulty and awarding XP. In short your 1st level +1 LA character will receive the same XP as a 2nd level character and requires the same amount of XP to advance.

That's kinda how I figured it...but my GM insists that I only need as much xp as a level 1 character to go to level 2. I'm getting the same xp as the second level person would, but I apparently only need 1,000 xp to get to level 2(3)...it may just be his house rule, but it seemed a little unbalanced to me ^^; just wanted to check with people. Thanks for the reply.

LA = Level Adjustment

XP is awarded by ECL (Effective Character Level).
ECL = Class Level + Level Adjustment + Racial Hitdice.

Normally, both LA and Racial Hitdice are 0, so your ECL = your Class Level.
But when you have an LA, that gets taken into account.

A Figher 1 with the Half-Dragon template (LA +3) counts as a 4th level character, in all ways.

you SHOULD be counting your total HD, Class Levels, and LA (your ECL) when determing a) How much XP you gain from an encouter, and b) how much XP you need for your next level

Codexia,

Your PC has an ECL of 2 (1 class level +1 LA). It is for xp purposes a second level character.

To advance a level, it therefore needs the relevant xp total that would send a PC to level 3 (3,000xp).

From the SRD in the Monsters as Races section:

Level Adjustment and Effective Character Level: To determine the effective character level (ECL) of a monster character, add its level adjustment to its racial Hit Dice and character class levels.
Use ECL instead of character level to determine how many experience points a monster character needs to reach its next level. Also use ECL to determine starting wealth for a monster character.

Like I said, this is how I figured it should work ^^; he STILL seems to think that I only need the xp for a second level character...so...lol, if he's really that convinced, I'm tired of arguing with him about it, let him level me faster, lol
