Druids don't get familiars, they get animal conpanions. Druids recieve those by casting Animal Friendship, I think.

True. If you wanted a familiar, you should have taken a level in wizard or sorcerer instead.

Anyway, casting Animal friendship is practically free, and the details outlining what the animal can and cannot do are given under the spell.

Both of you should sit down and read the druid entry in the PHB very carefully. There's a whole section that deals with animal companions and how they're different from familiars.

Maybe he meant animal companion and just said familiar? I've slipped countless times when I tell my players to teach their "familiars" tricks, or for my wizards to "summon your damn animal companions!" In that case, you guys should be good to go.

There is no animal friendship in 3.5. The rules are kind of vague about exactly how one acquires an animal.

Well I'll be damned; you're right! Upon further checking of the SRD:

If a druid releases her companion from service, she may gain a new one by performing a ceremony requiring 24 uninterrupted hours of prayer. This ceremony can also replace an animal companion that has perished.

So I would say you would have to choose your companion, then perform the ceremony for 24 hours. Upon completion, your chosen animal wanders up, and starts obeying you. You may choose the any of the following:

badger, camel, dire rat, dog, riding dog, eagle, hawk, horse (light or heavy), owl, pony, snake (Small or Medium viper), or wolf.

That should settle ya. Have fun!

Well you could, but more effective animals are available to you. If you want a cat that you can converse with though, you're SOL. Animal companions are just regular animals that share a connection with you, not magical beings in and of themselves.

Get a badger and tie a longer tail to it. Presto! A cat!

Your animal companion will not be intelligent. It will just be an animal with a special ability or two.

SOL means (excrement) Out of Luck

Thank you.

I think he's serious :)

What I mean is, you can use the Badger stats and call it a cat, or some other animal that's on the Druid list. For example, try a druid with a wildcat companion, using Wolf stats. Rather than "trip" (the wolf's special ability) just say the cat pounces and pushes opponents over that way. It should work nicely enough, and the mechanics are of course the same as an animal actually on the Druid list.

I don't think any DM would be worried if you used the stats of something on the Druid's list, and just called it something else.
