| AzarKing05-08-05, 06:35 AM | I would like views on playing a person who is dedicated to healing and bearing the burdens of others. How far would he go? Would he heal monsters after a battle? Would he allow battle to being with? This is a real conundrum  |
| Aardobard05-08-05, 05:27 PM | IIRC Ilmater is not a diplomacy deity. His priest may not even have much charisma at all. One way you could center him is to make him angry. He's angry that the poor suffer, he's angry that the lame limp, and he's doing something about it. Maybe he's angry that others aren't as impassioned about it as he is. If he has to hack people off to motivate them, great! So what if they threaten him, he's a sufferer. He's willing to take on not just the physical torment of others but maybe the emotional as well, if it furthers his goal. Maybe he needs a goal, something specific, but grand. Then decide how you want him to go about working with people to get it done. That'll help you decide how his personality is. Choose an emotional state. Ilmater is the "Crying God". With the example above, this guy could be crying mad, a lot. (Have you ever dealt with someone like this?) You could make him like the spokepeople for CCF on TV. "It takes so little for you to help relieve someone's suffering. Imagine how good you'll feel." This is a more patient, pleading, persistent persona. Maybe it's someone who really revels in helping others and gets a huge charge out of it. Basically you can take any flavor of fanaticim and gear it to this guy with as little or as much intensity as you like. I hope this helps get the juices going. |
| Meshakhad05-08-05, 11:07 PM | Ilmater is capable of great anger. He is the kindest, most benevolent person you ever met. He also despises evil and torture. His archfoe is Loviatar, the goddess of torture and sadism. |
| Morka05-09-05, 09:23 AM | Intimidation and Torture won't work on you. You are so confident that your foes will loose interest in torturing you. "He doesn't even scream, it's useless!" You could have your character be an human with some deformation, who was continually bullied by fellows kids. He was turning violent and wild. He then met a priest of Ilmater who taught him a few prayers to help him endure wounds. Progressively, he stopped complaining when other kids were bullying him, and they started to feel guilty and respect him. Then in the future, each time this character meet someone being beaten, he tell the thugs: "Beat me instead of him." His self-assurance would discourage most common thug. You could perhaps ask your DM if you couldn't use the psionic skill Auto-Hypnosis, it's a Wisdom related skill that allow you to resist fear and pain. |
| Draco Strang05-09-05, 10:35 AM | Help the poor and impoverished avoid pain at any turn. Grab their red-hot pots for them, lug their giant rock from point A to point B, and above all, kick ass if you see someone inflicting pain on another who doesn't deserve it. |
| SammasterT05-09-05, 11:00 AM | I don't think that a priest of Ilmater would be opposed to warfare; unless of course one side was at a clear disadvantage and was just being beaten up on by the other. He might heal monsters if they were in a clear position of suffering, ratehr than being their usual sadistic monster selves He could be some big strong priestly dude, who likes little kids and small animals and such, and who is a gentle giant, maybe even a bit simple (or not!) who will stand by and let folk (guards, tough guys, ornery old ladies)abuse him and make jokes about him despite his size, enduring it all .... until someone harms one of his "little ones". Then the wrath of righteousness begins to boil up and courage finds its spokesman. Sha-zam!! Anyway, with all of this talk about happily enduring suffering, I can't get the image of Gene Wilder in Stir Crazy out of my head ..... |
