The excerpt I am questioning reads as above. Does this imply that humans are able to have the +1 feat at first level on top of the variant human model, or that they may have the variant model in lieu of the +1 feat at first level. I just want to make sure I present this properly to my GM with an understanding of the supposed mechanic. This is directly off the GM screen which was provided to the players for character creation. But I don't believe there has been a variant human created in this campaign previously. ( I am joining an ongoing campaign.) And btw, this is not WoTC material. |

Check with the other human characters - do what they did. This is not about being a 'variant human'. It is a variant rule. I think what you will find is that if you use the variant rules, a human from a particular region might get some extra stuff on top of your standard starting gear and access to some regional feats. If your not in a published world or don't have the source book or access to material regarding humans of a partiular region then you should simply ignore the bit in brackets. |

| Salla01-16-07, 02:33 AM | I read it like this: At the GM's choice, all human characters either: Get 2 feats at the player's discretion, OR One feat at the player's discretion and one Regional Feat of the player's choice. (Since this is an FR thing, I don't know much about it, but as you wrote it, that's what it says to me.) |
| Nytmare01-16-07, 04:07 AM | I'm assuming this is for a Scarred Lands campaign. What it's saying is that you can get 1 bonus feat for being human, just like normal OR instead of that bonus feat, you can use the "Humans by Region" rules to be from a specific place and get the +2/-2 to the corresponding attribute pair. |

Yes, it is the Scarred Lands campaign, and thanks for the insight folks. I would have simply asked my GM, but he's been a bit preoccupied with life lately and hasn't answered emails. I was thinking it was more, in addition to the +1 feat you would also take on the aspects of your regional variant, see as you're just swapping +2 for -2 of another stat with no other changes that'd lead to an LA change. |
| Nytmare01-16-07, 09:18 AM | ...see as you're just swapping +2 for -2 of another stat with no other changes that'd lead to an LA change. Er. Is that the DM's rule? |
| Oblix01-16-07, 09:31 AM | I may have been confusing on my wording of "swapping" which was not what I intended to convey. More clearly stated: "I read the rule as a GM's discretion to give the racial variant of a +2/-2 depending on region, in addition to the +1 feat, seeing as the +2/-2 is the only change the racial variant makes. I don't see that this change, as it's simply swapping the original human template out by a +2/-2 change; which alters stats in an equal manner, would cause an LA." |
