| pjackson04-19-04, 10:56 AM | In our last session we fought an Ice Devil. We should really have run away, we were totally outclassed, but the DM was kind and we only had one character die. If played to its full strength we would have had almost no chance. An Ice Devil has CR 13 so the DM thought it would be a fair challenge for us. Our party has three PCs, levels 15, 14 and 14 (now 13) . We are all multiclassed. I have the highest level character - Rogue/Wizard(illusionist)/Fighter/Duelist - caster level 9 There is a Sorcerer/Ranger/Spellsword - caster level 8 The character who died is a Barbarian/Ranger/Fighter/Rogue/Foe Hunter (orc)/Frenzied Berserker. There was also my cohort - Fighter5/Rogue2/Deepwood Sniper2 CR 13 seems low to me, though I know a cleric would have been useful. |
| Schizo-RedBlade04-19-04, 11:09 AM | :whatsthis This is kinda funny. My first guess would be: YOU MULTICLASSED WAY TOO MUTCH, o well :looloo: :teach: I don't have a MM next to me, I lent it to somebody but o well, I would guess you should shoot a hell lot of fire spells at his ass, and maybe buy some healing potions (if your DM allows it) or Staff of Cure (any) Wounds. I dunnow what kind of weapons you use but maybe they're not enchanted enough. You could also enchant all your Fighters with protective spells like Mage armor and shield. I used to play a caster and enchanting my teammates really worked. :teach: Anyway the enemy sounds cool, gonna look it up in my MM, maybe I'll have some better advice after that :king: |
| pjackson04-19-04, 11:36 AM | All multiclssing was done to fit the character concept. I know it means we a less powerful than we could have been, but more important considerations applied. Anyway 3 of the 4 characters having at least 2 levels of rogue was useful. We manage to make all our saves against its cone of cold (at will) and with evasion took no damage. Oddly enough Ice Devils are immune to fire. I have a +2 shortsword. The barbarian has a +2 keen greatsword, and the spellsword has a flaming weapon. My cohort has a +2 bow. We have tried getting holy/blessed enchantments, but were tricked by some corrupt clerics. We have a lot of healing potions, a wand of CLW and a staff of healing. We all have armours bounuses of +4 or 5 normally so mage armor would not add to that. Shield is range personal so I can not cast it on anyone else. If it really works for you you are not playing the standard rules. We did use haste. |
| Schizo-RedBlade04-19-04, 01:55 PM | :tantrum: Thought it was, lol, somebody told me and it kept staying in my mind, lol. Well it must have some weakness, tried Ice? may sound weird but who knows, maybe it works, lol. Or just talk to it and beg for mercy :P I still find it weird that you can't beat it. But still, the CR doesn't say a lot, some creatures are just overpowered for it's CR. I say just kill some creatures, level up, and try again, but this time try taking a NPC cleric or Paladin with you (Smite Evil) But exactrly how did it kill you? your throws just sucked or did his rule? :whatsthis: |
| Dragonteuthis04-19-04, 02:19 PM | I agree with you that the Ice Devil is extremely powerful for a CR 13. With a base of +14, an AC of 32, and incredible stats, it should be a tough fight for even a 14th-level fighter, who will likely have a tough time hitting it. But it doesn't stop there; it's damage reduction, spell-like abilities, and especially it's regeneration push it towards the realm of a CR 15-17. I'm glad only one of you died. |
| olshanski_home04-19-04, 02:21 PM | Well, since your casters have multiclassed, and the ice devil has a SR of 25... that means that your average caster level check will fail about 75% of the time. I'd probably not even bother casting spells at it... if you were to cast spells, I'd go for sonic spells since it has no sonic resistance. You are better off buffing each other. You might have to try casting dimensional anchor... just to keep it from getting away, healing, and coming after you again... it all depends on how nasty your DM is. You should have at least one cleric or paladin in the group that can cast "Align Weapon"... that is pretty much essential once you get to level 7 in my opinion... I'd probably even have a wand or two of it and pass them around. Ideally you buff up in advance. Protection from Evil is a good and inexpensive buff. It is also good to have a paladin or something that gives courage... you don't want that DC22 fear save taking out your best fighter. Once you've dimensional anchored it and have good aligned weapons, pound the crap out of it. |
| pjackson04-19-04, 03:29 PM | The DM was kind and ignored several of its abilities, including the immunity to fire, after he realized it was stronger than he had expected. It hacked the barbarian to pieces, and then knocked the spellsword to under 0, but the fire shield she had killed it. But if the DM had given it all the abilities it should have had it our best chance would have probably been my phantasmal killer (about 0.5% chance of working). The rolls seemed about even. It was stronger than us, even with the DM ignoring several of its abilities. It appeared from a trap (I rolled 1 when checking :( ) so we did not have much time to prepare. We did think we had several aligned weapons a little while ago, unfortunately the temple had been corrupted and our weapons were cursed (to deal equal wounds to us that we did to others) rather than enhanced. Then we were lured into a trap which we only escaped because I had just learned teleport. We are currently trying to deal with that corruption. |
| meabolex04-19-04, 04:04 PM | It's a tough fight, particularly for your party. This kind of fight requires a focused party - one person on healing and buffing, one person on full max-damage attack, one person on sneak attack, and one person hurling arcane spells at the beast. Your party has many abilities, but it gives up specialization for versatility. The ice devil, unfortunately, rewards parties for being specialized. The spell resistance requires that for a level 13 caster, you must have ALL your spellcasting levels in one class AND have spell penetration for just above a 50/50 chance to affect the ice devil. Considering your two casters aren't primary casters (that is, they don't have full spellcasting level progression), your spells are basically negated by the high spell resistance. The high AC is really an issue for a pure fighter (or any class that has a full BaB progression). All your characters gave up full BaB for other classes. Another major problem is no full-time healer or source of healing. An invisible cleric using high-powered healing spells would have kept your melee tough alive. This is just a tough fight -- it exploits all the weaknesses in your party. As a DM, I've made this mistake before. You just have to be careful when you set the PCs against creatures without taking the party into consideration. |
| Goreg Skullcrusher04-19-04, 04:35 PM | The CR system isn't too much at fault, as it'd be ludicrous to expect it to adapt to every party combination of a given level. Some parties will be too powerful, and some, uh, er, won't be. :D (But since all of you powered-down via multi-classing, it's not as bad) However, as a kind of saving grace, I'll point out that Demons/Devils/Dragons have their CR's calculated oddly. They seem to take into account that the PC's will be actively seeking to combat them, and will have time to prep in advance. (This is definately the case for older Dragons) My DM almost tore apart the team with an advanced Spiked Devil (our party was EPL 12). We had a pretty strong team, but we all ended up having to Dimension Door away. Your DM may have made a slight error, but you really shouldn't hold him to it. It's the PC's responsibility for knowing which battles to fight and which to avoid. Given that, anytime the words "Dragon" or "Devil" are uttered from my DM's mouth I'm already halfway through my Teleport spell. :) Perhaps you should adopt a similar strategy? |
| eudas04-19-04, 04:53 PM | * it's a CR13 encounter; * a CR [x] encounter is a challenge for a party of 4 characters each of level [x] that should use up ~20% of that party's available resources; * your party is underpowered by having only 3 members; * your party is further underpowered by being moderately to extensively multiclassed. All in all, the outcome is not terribly surprising. Even if you do not somehow pick up a cleric or paladin, you may want to look into arcane strategies, such as spells like Dismissal, etc. eudas |
| Lincoln Hills04-19-04, 05:12 PM | Gelugons are quite senior in the Nine Hells - they are meant to be killing machines. If you turned a corner and bumped INTO this creature, then I'd say - yes, your DM did you a disservice. But he DEFINITELY did a disservice by "gimping" the monster - I've had a DM do this to me many times, and it always feels bad. You think to yourself - "I bet I'd have (died/won anyway) if he'd played the monster as it should be - but I'll never know." Now, on the other hand, if you knew that you'd encounter an ice devil - or even if you just knew that your current NPC adversary was a summoner of such creatures - the three of you ought to have made preparations. Nothing unreasonable - but you arcane casters could (with the DM's permission) have had basic info about these creatures' SR and their elemental immunities/resistances. (Personally, if I were engaging one of these entities with the characters listed - and had time for a plan - it would run something like this: Cohort stays back and lays on flask after flask of holy water - the damage is not much, but it CANNOT regenerate and is a TOUCH ATTACK. Spellsword hangs back and keeps a dispel magic "held action" - perhaps firing a lightning bolt if the opportunity presents itself, but be prepared for SR to foil that. Assuming your duelist and frenzied berserker both have weapons suitable to overcome its DR, they should close and try to force a running fight - doing their best to prevent the creature getting a full attack each round (every other round is probably the lowest you can get, if the devil's being played to proper intelligence.) Weapons with the shock, holy, chaotic, or thunder enhancement would help you out. Creative illusion use (especially Blur or Displacement) will save you a lot of hit points.) Now, if only I'd posted this two weeks ago, henh? |
| Eldren04-19-04, 08:27 PM | Gelugons are nasty foes, and one of their nastier abilities is the use of Cone of Cold at will. They're nasty, to be sure. The primary reason that they remain immune to fire, despite being called "ice devils", is that they don't have the "ice" subtype. They're called "ice devils" only because they live in Cania, the 8th layer of Baator (the Nine Hells), and the entire layer is frozen. This is why I think they should have just been called gelugons, instead of "ice devils". I know that 3rd Edition likes to refer back to 1st Edition a lot, but geez... We got a ton of planar material from 2nd Edition in Planescape, and they should have incorporated most of the baseline stuff from that campaign setting once 3rd Edition came along... As to whether they're CR 13 or not, I think they're a strong 13, but ultimately still a 13. Keep in mind, however, that a CR 13 doesn't mean they're a challenge for one 13th level PC, it means they're a challenge for four 13th level PCs, using up approximately 20% of the party's resources in the battle (spells, hit points, item charges, etc.). |
| Asmodeous04-20-04, 02:57 AM | Yeah, I know the ones. My Dm likes to throw them at our party as well, last time it was 4 of them at once!! we won that fight, but keep in mind that my own character imploded two of them. should I mention the huge mega centipede that was in the room at the same time? My character was left to deal with the 4 ice devils while the wiz, fighter and rogue fought the centipede. it should have been a loosing fight, I think that the huge array of multiclassing has undone you all here. I think somebody mentioned it before, but your lower BaB and spell resistance penetration would have made you all similar to lower level characters with more hit points to it. SR25 is very tough for even a level 14 pure wizard to pierce consistently. castor level 8 & 9's hasnt got a hope in hell. I think you guys are going to have more troubles like this at higher levels when you start facing cr 16 - 18 dragons and stuff. Your DM should keep you guys to multiple lower cr monster encounters instead of a single monster roughly equivilant to your party level. We have always found that multiple opponents are much tougher than a single monster encounter. We fought a level 20 dragon creature with 9th level divine spells (cr20) and killed it easily in three rounds where as the 4 ice demons and centipede took us about 8-10 rounds to win and I had to mass heal everybody afterwards! |
| pjackson04-22-04, 08:26 AM | Thanks for the comments. I think our DM made a mistake, which he tried to correct by weakening the Ice Devil. I don't blame him for it. I know our characters could be stronger at their levels, but they are balanced against each other. I would have teleported away if I could have taken everyone with me. I need to replace the scroll of teleport I wrote for the spellsword - it was used when we ran from a demon. (I distracted the demon with a Major Image of an angel being gated in whilst they rescued the sacrifical victim and escaped, then I teleported away myself.) This time we did not know what we were going to face. I would have prepared several copies of Protection from Evil if I had known. I'm looking to recruit a cleric follower to provide healing between battles, and to create an amulet that can cast shield once a day for each of us. |
| Lincoln Hills04-22-04, 02:10 PM | When I first read, "How would you fight an ice devil?", for some reason, I thought back to the Hostess ads that used to pop up in the ad pages of Marvel Comics. . Ice Devil: I am big and mean for NO GOOD REASON! Rarrgh! . Joe Paladin: Here, Ice Devil! Perhaps these HOSTESS FRUIT PIES will sate your appetite for destruction! . Ice Devil: The rich strawberry filling! Also available in peach and okra! Rarrgh! Mmm! . Joe Paladin: And so Virtue triumphs again! Thanks to HOSTESS FRUIT PIES! |
| Koga:The ninja trick04-22-04, 06:09 PM | [Super Friend narrator]Using his ultra common sense.. Koga devises a scheme to defeat the ice devil..[/Super Friend narrator] Umm.. use summon monster to unleash a bunch of magmin then run away cackeling? :P |
| Goreg Skullcrusher04-22-04, 11:37 PM | [Super Friend narrator] "To his surprise the Koga feels his super powers fading from him quickly! Without his trusty common sense, what will become of our hero?" :D Ice Devils are immune to fire, and have DR that most summons can't bypass. |
| Heron_Marked_Blade04-22-04, 11:55 PM | Electricity. Definitely electricity. Anything that makes your eyes light up, your ears smoke, and hair stand on end has GOT to be good. |
| Asta Kask04-23-04, 06:12 AM | Fight an Ice Devil? I'd hire myself a couple of high-level mercenaries and sit back and watch the fur fly. Why risk your own life? (plus: if they die, you don't have to pay them) |
| Shemeska the Marauder04-23-04, 07:39 PM | How to fight one? Well I'd start by calling him a powerful, respected Gelugon and then apologize for my clueless companions calling him an 'ice devil'. Then I'd ramble on for a while about how mortals can be such berks, especially when it comes to anything on the planes. Then I'd disintigrate him for the failure to give me the same respect I deserve. *smiles a typical Arcanaloth smile* (1e nostalgia in the naming of Baatezu for 3.5 has gone overboard to the point of lacking depth and flavor) |
