HP modifier from Int, what? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm playing in a party with a quite newbie DM, so it's easy to convince him about the existence of rules in other supplementary books.
The elf wizard in the party was lucky enough to throw 18 for Int thus he's Int is 20 now, and due to a necklance or some other jewerly (don't know) he gain further +2.
What he said is that he picked up a feat that he can use the Int modifier instead of the Con to calculate the HP/level. This sounds ridiculus for me, as he has about 10 Con, and is HP almost reaches the cleric's, and exceeds my rogue's..
What I mentioned to the DM is that according to the 3.5 rules temporary bonuses like the necklance cannot be added when calculating points at level-up, like sklill points or hp. Correct me if I ain't right.

The question is: does such a feat really exist in 3.5 environment? This makes the wizard sosososo overpowered imho..
And if it does, please tell me in which book can i find it.

Thanks in advance

I've never heard of such a feat. And it sounds too incredible to believe.

The wizard is refering to Mind Over Body, a feat which appears in Player's Guide to Faerun, page 41. Also, it appears in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, page 36.

It is a regional feat, though....I suggest you look it up.

You're welcome

It sounds like the player misunderstood the Mind over Body feat from Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (p. 37.)

The feat only uses the INT bonus for HP's on level 1.
After that the character reverts to his CON bonus (and gets a single bonus hitpoint every time he picks a metamagic feat).
...And last but not least, the feat can only be taken at level 1.

Thank you for the fast reply, i think i should have a talk with the DM asap :P

And what about the temp bonuses? If he has the necklance when the character is created can he add +1 hp due to the increased intelligence? (22 instead of 20)

Balu000- In this case, no, because the feat only applies to level 1 ability score. Regional feats are based on a character's existing life - like Fey Blood - rather than continual development. So he gets his hitpoint bonus from his _original_ intelligence score.

In most cases, though, temporary ability modifiers do affect hit points and such. For example, a raging barbarian gets +4 to Constitution, and consequently extra hitpoints.

That's up to the GM, but I'd say no.

The feat is based on unmodified INT, which can still give a +5 HP bonus at level 1 alone.

When compared to other feats (like +1 to hit with a given weapon), the feat is strong enough already.

Yep, that's the feat all right. The player is allowed to exchange his Int bonus for his Con bonus to hit points ONLY at first level. After first level, it is standard Con bonus to Hp's.

Now, I would personally rule that wearing an item that enhances Int does not apply to that first level "exchange" since it is a one-time event. Keep in mind the following regarding the revised Mind Over Body feat as well.

1. Any time the character takes a metamagic feat, he gains 1 hit point.
2. Character receives a +1 insight bonus to AC if he is an arcane caster.

Also note that Mind Over Body is available only in the Forgotten Realms and only to certain races from certain regions. Regional feats still cost a feat slot and if your boy is an elf, there is his first level feat.

We made the same mistake in doing that. I had to take a second look at that feat.

You're not supposed to post non-OGC material.

Since it only uses the int modifier at lv1, any modifiers gained after that would not be counted, plus it would be calculated at 1st lv, before any other eq or spells are factored in. Besides, how could a lv 1 player gain access to a headband of intellect? I cant see any way of boosting int at 1st lv spell oe eq wise.

As for the item, I’d veto letting that +2 count when calculating the INT modifier at 1st level since the item’s modifier is temporary. What the Elf suggests is a rule that would allow anyone who acquires such an item to permanently add the bonus. Under his logic, he’d also be entitled to bonus Skill Points for every level (including 4x the additional INT modifier for 1st level).

As for your DM, I strongly urge him to adopt a rule that prohibits players from using material from non-core books unless the player who wants to use the material can provide him with a copy. Sorry, but this is one instance in which hearsay is inadmissible. I don’t care if a player read a rule and thinks he remembers it in its entirety. Unless he can show me the rule in print, it’s out.

It would seem alright if he simply got to add his int mod to HP, regardless of what it was. Then if he leveled up his intelligence from levels, he'd gain an extra hp, and if he gets a headband +6, he gets +3 hp.

I'll agree the feat is pretty nice, so it could just be from the base intelligence, and still be fine balancewise.
