Hypothetical Question about Good [Archive] - Wizards Community

Say, hypothetically, you are the newest member to a group. You are a Chaotic Good LV 10 Ascetic Sorcerer, and you are 12 (in game).

Say there is a halfling paladine in your group that gets his kicks by pushing people smaller than himself down wells, but because you are new (and an easy mark) he decides to push you down a well.

After you hit the bottom, you cast fly on yourself and get to the top of the well, and there he is... laughing at you. That isnt a very Lawfully good thing to do now, is it?

But what should I do?

a) call him a dumb meany head and fly away. (heart broken)

b) blank out in a fit of childish rage (and allow the DM to control me as an NCP until i can regain myself) and suffer the recourses.

c) blind him

d) cast Earth Reaver on him (while at the same time praying I dont kill him and or hurt anyone close by)

e) try to intimidate him (which I only have 6 skill points in)

f) sick my psuedodragon familiar (Durp) on him

or g) challange him to mortal combat (fight to the death- or incompasitation through bludgeoning- with sticks)

Hypothetically speaking, which way can and should I go to get back at him, while still keeping true to my chaotic good self (and hopefully not loosing my exalted status)?

Let me know.

While Paladins aren't necessarily humorless stiffs, pushing people down wells is a good way to get them killed. While the player may be fully aware that you can swim, and you have plenty of hit points, and so on so forth, in-character, he has no guarantee that you won't fall in, panic, and drown or simply break your neck.

(Random note ... a Halfling Paladin who pushes people SMALLER than himself down wells? That's not a whole lot of potential victims.)

... waitasec, that means most of the people he's shoving down wells are CHILDREN, who are much MORE likely to die in this kind of situation! Threatening innocent lives for fun is definitely NOT Paladinly behavior. It is a blatantly evil act, and unless you have the world's most lenient DM, he can kiss his Paladin status goodbye.

Being exalted, this makes your personal choice of actions iffy. First and foremost, he DID make what could be construed as an attempt on your life. You should probably check with the DM to see if the fall *could* have been lethal. Now, the best thing to do, I think ... is to shake your head sadly at him, and say something disparaging about his level of maturity. When a 12 year old acts more adult than you do, it's hopefully a shot to the ego. Call him a baby, too. Treat him like a six-year old, since he's deciding to act like one ... be condescending and aloof, and treat him like he's too immature to make his own decisions.

Because he obviously IS too immature to make his own decisions.

Hmmm lets see if it was me...

Put an arcane mark on him. Handy little cantrip you should have. Since you are casting in on a living person it will only last a month, but if you want you can put it onto all of his posesions making it permanent since YOU would be the only one who could erase it. This mark could be anything from a smily face to a 6 leter word. This is a good revenge, but if you want to keep him inline make it an INVISIBLE arcane marking, when he gets out of line (such as pushing children down wells) cast detect magic around him. And the markings will begin to glow!

I say put it on his face while he's asleep, try to think of a good sylmbol or 6 leter word that would make him mad

since one of his other favorite past times is sleeping with women in random inns and than rolling dice to see if he contracted something, maybe i could write "dirty" on his forehead, or "lier" so when he is trying to do a deplomecy check i could activate it.

I wonder if that would count against him?

oh and since he's a paladin he has no need to worry about STD's, paladins are imune to things like that... seems a bit ironic in this situation doesn't it:confused:

Just ignore him, but when it comes to a fight make sure you never cast anything that helps him. Help everyone else in the group, but not him.

Or, if you are feeling particularly vindictive, do you have the Item spell? If so, get a few nails that when "itemised" will not be thick enough to go all the way through the heels of his boots. Next time he is asleep, steal said boots and hammer an itemised nail into each heel. Make sure the duration is long enough to ensure he will be wearing them when teh spell wears off.

Since I posted, I have decided to make my character an Ascetic Favored Soul, which- while allowing me to spontaniously cast spells- doesnt allow me to use arcane mark or shrink item. So I guess I couldnt use those, but this is a just a hypothetical post. I would just like to state that the probability of him pushing me down a well is high- lile 75%.

I just want to be prepared.

Any other ideas?

Come to Lubbock for a day, and I'll have my paladin smite him for pushing children down wells. Then I'll smack your DM for allowing chaotic evil behavior from a LG paladin.

As for you, if he pushes you, push back with magic. You can do a lot to a person without killing them.

I wonder how long it would take for him to realize that I deafened him? I mean, it wont be as obvious as blinding him...

I could always cure him of it... once I gained a level and added it to my list of known spells.

My idea involves hanging the paladin over a bonfire. "Bet ya wish you were at the bottom of a well now, don'tcha."

Conversely, you might go for subtle. Start by talking to the paladin and tell him how much you love being part of his team. Stroke his ego a little. Slowly guide him towards the nearest well under the pretext of being thirsty or needing to refill your waterskin. Finally, push him down the well. If he gets upset, explain that you thought it was a bonding ritual that everybody in the party goes through.

BTW, remember to cast grease around the top of the well. For added humiliation, make up a sign condemning the water in the well due to exposure to the paladin.

I wonder... what if I used "create water" and drenched him every morning as a wake up call?

Or would randomly cast is on him during the day... (quick calculation...) i could use it 6 times a day... that could make for fun times.

When you're at the bottom of the well, act like you can't swim and you're drowning.

Even if he gets you out hand him over a bill for all the items damaged by the fall or the water (scrolls for example, leather items, furs). If he doen't want to pay, sue him.

Pray to the paladin's god and let it know what one of its paladins is misbehaving.

That should at least get the paladin a stern warning, possibly even loss of powers pending atonement. It's entirely possible that the paladin may even permanently fall.

I like the "push the paladin down the well too" bit. Greasing the walls is good, but what works almost as well is getting a couple 10 foot poles, and prodding him off the walls as he climbs out. You'll need a couple just in case he grabs one.

Alternatively, tell him you don't think it's funny, you could have died. Then, if he does it again, assume he's a chaotic evil psychotic acting like a paladin (which he is, if the DM is letting him get away with this) and blast him to pieces. Let his God work it out when his soul gets there. It's not your position to judge him, but merely to arrange the appointment with his God (to paraphrase a relatively famous quote). Telling him you could be killed is important though, this way both the character and the player knows they're engaging in a potentially deadly act against a supposed friend for no more than a few yucks. They deserve whatever they get after that, paladin or no.

 What kind of paladin is this guy!?!
If the well were more than 10 ft. deep, and your guy's a twelve year-old, this easily could have injured or killed him.
I run a Ravenloft campaign, and this sort of unprovoked act against a PC, not to mention an innocent kid, and an exalted being (whether it caused death or merely injury) would have called for a Ravenloft powers check (to see if the dark deity notices your evil inclinations). The very fact that he had to make this check would mean revoking his paladin status.
I would bring this up. This guy doesn't sound like paladin material, and the paladin status is supposed to be a difficult road to maintain. If your DM wants to run the game in accordance with what D&D is about, he should have this guy lose his paladin status.
As far as your own options, chaotic good has a lot less restriction than lawful good. As long as your acts are not horrible (assuming this 'paladin' is not yet evil), almost anything goes. I like the mark - it shows that your own character may have a stronger sense of justice than his - and stays true to your alignment.

R. Pout and stomp your feet. Because if you have a character that somehow managed to get to level 10 and can still fall for old tricks then the jokes on you.

It's important to note that this young Sorcerer is Exalted, as in Book of Exalted Deeds. Revenge is a serious no-no for Good in general, much less those who hold themselves to the higher standards of being Exalted. So, engaging in petty cruelty in revenge is right out (unless you want to be Ex-alted). So, no paybacks.

Well, first, he should have gotten de-paladized the FIRST time he did that well stunt, without your interference. The sleeping around is annoying, but there's nothing that says Paladins have to be celibate (though if he does it so often that it interferes with his duties, he may be in trouble).

Your best bet is simply to report him to the authorities next time he does it (since it's apparently a bit late now, since you said you've had a game since then). If not that, for the safety of the people, start spreading the information that Mr. Half-Pint Paladin-Wannabe is prone to random acts of violence ... it should spread through the town, and perhaps the countryside, fast enough. Public opinion can be a powerful force.

Just a little background on the paladin in question:

(In character): he is a halfling paladin that rides into battle on the back of a mop headed dog (like from the shaggy dog disney movie) and worships Anna (a god i have yet to hear about else where, but she apparently delights in the whimsy pushing people down wells provides) so he sees pushing people down wells as a tribute to her. Plus the DM sort of finds it funny which is why he hasnt revoked the paladin status (as no one has been injured yet... yet).

(Out of character): he is a 250 lbs, 6 foot plus gay guy who keeps eyeballing me at games (just a little creepy), and he tends to bend the rules when marking on his character sheet (something the DM has been keeping very good tabs on as of late), and he constantly rolls to see if he contracted anything when he sleeps around.

Because our group basically wants to have fun, we dont make a lot of waves when he plays, but we do remind him this is supposed to be fun for everybody.

Don't be scared to make waves. If you don't you do it now, you will be a carpet in the game. If the character acts like a jerk now, imagine what he'll be like once he really starts to know you.

Yeesh. Whether or not anyone has been injured isn't the point. The point is that he is doing something that could injure someone, and the fact that he does it intentionally should get him a divine smackdown.

I can't conceptualize a diety who loves practical jokes (if you can actually consider pushing those smaller and weaker than yourself down wells a practical joke), having an order of paladins anyway.

I suggest another game. If your DM is going along with this BS, then he's not fit to run.

Didn't read all the replies but it seems to me that pushing someone down a well is cause enough for the DM to revoke his Palidinhood. Laughing at someone falling down a well, especially if he cast's fly "after" he hits the bottom is a different matter. Did you say he was "sleeping arround" too? Strike two in my book.

If the DM doesn't take action, ask him to. If he refuses to punish the Paladin, I'll assume he is either stupid, his best friend in RL, or sleeping with him or his sister. In any case, you are on your own.

Oh, that's the other thing. You need to get both this guy and your DM to read the rulebooks a bit more. Paladins are immune to disease. Since he doesn't know this handy bit of information, he may have overlooked the part about how "paladins swear to follow a code of conduct that is in line with lawfulness and goodness."
