| Chaotis12-26-05, 09:51 AM | Okay, I'm REALLY new, but this is the last thing I need to make my character. Where in the Players Handbook is the formula for HP scores? I'm making a Level 1 Human Paladin, so if that narrows it down any, it's a good thing. |
| Chaotis12-26-05, 09:53 AM | I looked through the entire thing, otherwhise I wouldn't be posting. I don't know how I would of missed it, but I did. |
| Shaggy_Shaggs12-26-05, 09:59 AM | Okay, I'm REALLY new, but this is the last thing I need to make my character. Where in the Players Handbook is the formula for HP scores? I'm making a Level 1 Human Paladin, so if that narrows it down any, it's a good thing. Ignore the troll. HP for a 1st level character = maximum result of class hitdie + constitution modifier. For each level beyond 1st, the hitdie is rolled rather than taking the maximum result, and the Constitution modifier is added again (or subtracted again, if the modifier is negative, but a new level can never give less than 1 hp, if less than 1 is rolled you get 1). The hitdie size of the class should be found in the entry for the class itself, and the Constitution modifier (or any ability modifier) = (Ability Score - (10 if it's an even number, 11 if it's odd)) / 2. If you don't feel like searching for it again, the paladin's hitdie is 1d10. Hope that helps. EDIT: Previous poster, KJW? I hope you meant the guy previous to me. |
| KJW12-26-05, 09:59 AM | Don't have my PHB with me (on vacation), so can't give you page number, but for a 1st level paladin you get max hit points (10) + Constitution modifier + misc. adjustments such as the Toughness feat. Every level you advance in Paladin you roll d10 (IMC I let my players roll twice and take the highest, might want to ask your DM what he allows when you advance). Ignore previous poster (EDIT: No not you Shaggy Shaggs, though the fact you beat me by a nano-second and rendered my post irrelevant will be remembered... :) ), there are no bad questions especially starting out it can be overwhelming. |
| Chaotis12-26-05, 10:02 AM | Thank you. P.S. Time4AChange A.K.A: STFUer is already on my ignore list. OTHER P.S. My DM is my brother :D |
| Novacat12-26-05, 12:46 PM | While officially you get max at first level and roll every level after that, it seems like every DM I've played under has his own house rule for how to get HP. So yeah, be sure to ask your DM if he has any such special rules. |
| KJW12-26-05, 01:21 PM | Chaotis, don't let some of these posters give you the wrong opinion. The majority of the people on these boards are rather nice and helpful. It seems that today we have an abundance of people who got sticks and coal for Christmas and are a little bitter. :) I remember when I started playing D&D ages ago with the red box and I wish I had someone to explain stuff, we did AC like damage reduction... then I guess you could say we were just a few decades ahead of our time. ;) So don't worry and keep asking your questions. |

Yeah, guess my first post here I was just being too much of an ass. I agree with what you say, but some questions really irritate me. I mean come on the answer is in the first 20 pages (that he supposedly read). |

If you are using 3.0 or 2, let me know and I will look up the page numbers for those editions. |
| Cuaglar12-26-05, 05:27 PM | I had trouble with hitpoints myself when I started. I always wondered why a barbarian had a chance of getting fewer hitpoints than a sorceror, if he was unlucky, before I got the PHB. But, yeah... Good luck on the paladin-ing! |

I have seen people who have played for 10+ years who have no idea how to correctly play one. |
| Vestigial_Thumb12-26-05, 06:39 PM | So... was Time4AChange banned from the forum? |
| BobtheBiotitan12-26-05, 07:52 PM | So... was Time4AChange banned from the forum? I believe so with his behavior in a few threads that got more than a few "alerts" to the moderators. |

| The Captain12-28-05, 03:28 AM | If you are REALLY new then here you go... Your ability scores are your basic physical, mental, and social abilities. Your Constitution (CON) (one of your ability scores) can be thought of as how hardy you are. The points you have in each score will give you a bonus or penalty to just about everything you do (see the first two colums on page 8 of the Players Handbook). Your class determins your hit die (1d4, 1d6, etc...). At first level you get the maximum result on that die (ie. 1d8 = 8) plus your ability modifier for youir CON score as your hit points (HP). So a Paladin (1d10 hit die) with a con score of 13 (+1 modifier) will start with 11 HP (10+1=11). I do agree that Paladin can be a hard class to play for your first character, but if you're own DM isn't too much of a hard *ss they should be willing to give you hints as to how you should be playing your character ("You feel a strong sense of doubt when you picture yourself slaughtering the Kobold before you after it has clearly surrendered and is no longer a threat to anyone."). Good luck with your first campaign and here's to your first Holy Avenger. ;) |
