I have a bunch of books, and I play D&D somewhat often but my main problem is I can't pick a class, then I can't pick a PrC! I have a favorite, then I go through the book looking for PrCs and I see a cool PrC and go I NEED TO PLAY THAT, so I go looking for a good base class for that and run into a base class that would be bad for that, but be great for something else and go I NEED TO PLAY THAT, and I just can't stop!

How do you keep one class as your favorite?

For a favorite I just go by what comes most naturally to me (barbarian).
Branching out from that in order to avoid typecasting and staleness, however, I end up as scattered as you seem to be on the subject.

same here... except my favoured class seems to be Rogue, not Barbarian.
There are so many ideas that I want to test out, but we don't play enough to get to most of them.

If your a real man, then you'll play a fighter If your not a real man then don't bother- I don't want the good name of fighters being dragged though the mud.

As stated above, just go with what comes naturally.
I don't have a favorite class personally. DMing comes more naturally than PCing. Also, I don't like doing the same thing over and over again.

The classes I play most often are:
Psion ("Spell slots are for chumps")
Barbarian
Cleric

Fighter is my personal favourite, depite everything people say against the class. I just love the vast number of feats you can choose.

Try, instead of darting through the classes, outlining what you want in a character to yourself--roleplaying and mechanics. Do you want to play the awesome melee damage-dealer who mows down foes? A warlock (as your name) who can call upon demonic blessings at will? The clever rogue who does everything else important unnoticed, until his blade pierces a startled foe?
Look at what you want, then determine how to do it.

Does that class test thingy work? should I try it?

One class as a favorite, no thanks. I have one general character concept that I favor and then play variation on that theme.

If you can't decide what to play try this:
1. Write possible classes down on a piece of paper
2. Number them 1to x
3. Roll Die size x or larger
4. Play whatever the die indicates (or reroll if selection is not available)

I love using random methods to help me make up my mind, but don't just lock yourself into the die roll. What you do is after the die roll, check your gut, if you feel that twinge of disapointment then you probably didn't really want to play that class...so don't play that class, and cross it off the list. If you feel a twinge of joy or relief, then you found the class you really wanted to play.

I do this all the time when I need a character and don't want to stick to my cliches.
I also do it with race. I usually get some pretty interesting combos such as the Halfling Barbarian or the Thri-kreen ninja who can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Why not a Tiefling Warlock?

Seriously, I think you need to come up with what type of PC you want to play and then pick the class that is most associated with that idea. Then stick with it. Really isn't that difficult. I own a boatload of books as well so I kind of get where you're coming from however I think what I mentioned will work for ya.

Make up your mind, then stop reading your books. If some random thoughts pass through your head as to a character concept, kill them with alchohal or if your into it other self destructive bahavior. Then when your character dies in game you have a fresh perspective on what you want to play. :P

Well spoken!

Character creation will be a lot easier when you make the idea, the story of the character first, and then design the sheet around it. I always do that, and has never failed me.

How do I keep a favorite? How can I not? Psions all the way. :D

What I susually do, though, is figure out what I need my character to do. What role in the group needs filling, and then I do that. I never start with "I'm going to be that." I start with "My character needs to be able to do X" and then I make a character that can do X really well... and then find other things that that character can also do once s/he's good at X.

Here's a good solution for you: Whenever you get a good character idea, make a character sheet for him/her. Use a level appropriate to your campaign and write down stats/equipment accordingly. If you don't want to write a story or personal details for each one, you don't have to. It's the stats that count and you can add the fluff when it's time to but the build to use. (I personally do this from time to time just to make sure my best ideas aren't forgotten. Granted, I'll probably never use any of them, though. Still, just in case...)

Then, whenever you need a character, you only need the shuffle the character-sheet-pile and pick the top one. If it's not what your group needs you to be, or something you just really dread having to play at the moment, shuffle and pick again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

First of all, don't go scanning through books looking for a prestige class to build up to. That just limits you to what you can/will be able to do. Whats wrong with sticking with one class or maybe two through 10-12 levels, then find out what classes you are qualified for?

Since you're such an experienced player with access to so many books, why don't you just wait to see what other players in your group are going to play and then fill in with a character that will actually help the party succeed? This might seem like a cop-out answer, but your party will appreciate you more if your character selection is based more on party success versus your own selfish role-playing wants and needs... Wow, that sounded really harsh. I didn't mean to imply that you were selfish! I only meant- AAAAH! *is consumed by a fireball from the wizard that no one wanted to play*

I do this in almost every game I play. Frankly I can have fun with almost any character concept/class combinations, so long as they are consistently useful to the party. It's far less fun to play the second rogue in the party, than it is to play the only barbarian.

Maybe it comes from years of Dming, and NPC generation, but I can come up with a character background almost without even trying. Put some stats in front of me, and tell me who I'm adventuring with, and I'll give you a compatable, interesting, and helpful PC.

I always make my charcters last, and let everybody else decide what they want to play first. I then decide the role I'm going to fulfill, and follow it up with character generation. I finish with the background, alignment, motivations, and any general role-playing information like quirky habits, general appearance, and distinguishing characteristics. It works like a charm for me.

Excellent suggestion, this is what I like to do myself. I usually prepare a few character concepts (usually with a background sketch, picture, and technical notes, i.e., what feats/PrCs are absolutely necessary to make them work). Then I see what's needed in the party and pick the one that fits best.

I'm glad that there are others out there that have a problem choosing what class to play.

I have so many that its tough to choose what to play.

I love Scouts, theres just so much flavor there
I love Monks, again, just flavor
I love Totemist, just a super cool concept.
I love clerics, a healer with some kick
I love druids, often respected for their wisdom and more so feared for their renouned powers.
I love barbarians, nothing like the easy to push over the edge mad type
I love bards, Nothing like a smooth talker
I love Psions, nothing like mental projection.
I love Warlocks, oh the flavor!
I love Rogues, Stealth and subtlety, say no more

Often times, the way I decide is I see what everyone else is playing and fill in any holes. This often leads me to be a cleric, but when people see how tough my cleric is, they want to play one too.

If all nitches are covered, I try to go with a more "Jack of all trades" type of class like a rogue with heavy UMD or a bard or Psionic class (no soulknifes).

Thanks for all the help and keep posting, the first session is soon, a week or so, and I have picked what I am going to play (most likely), but I would also apreciate it if you stop posting your favorite classes. It's driving me mad. MAD
