I made a Character for a new game my group has been planning. As luck has it, it is in the Year of the Dragon. I was told this is a full year where every dragon goes nuts & attacks things because of a Rage. Wonderful right?

Before I was told this, I made my Character. A Female Lightfeet (Halfling)-Half Silver Dragon who is a lvl 8 Paladin, lvl 1 Cavalier who has a lvl 14 Silver Dragon cohort who is my Characters brother & Mount.
Now the GM said he would allow this. He was rather impressed with is. I looked up every feat I needed, my Cohort would need & so on but he had stated the Rage issue.

Now I have two players who think this would be great! Even with the Rage issue, one being a Dragon Shaman who worships Silver Dragons. How ever one is unsure and the last two have not really voiced anything.

Should I play this Character? The story I would be comeing in with would be due to this event, I am on a mission to find my Brother as he has run off in the Dragon Rage. Myself dealing with this issue too as I am half-dragon, would have to roll every day or attack the party as the Rage would take over me.

I am very tempted as it is only a year in game but I don't want to cause issues with the party or make the game taxing.. even stressfull for them.

What is a player to do?

I say go for it! But ask the DM if these 'rages' can be played out in character instead of comming down to rolling of dice. This would save most of the things that could possibly happen to your character or others that threaten any party with a Frenzied Berzerker. But this is indeed a wonderful rp setup though.

What I would suggest for these rages... see if the dm would allow your other half to kind of take over when the dragon side takes over... or at least stops you from harming an innocent life.

Kind of like... you suddenly go into a fit of rage in a bar, your fist balled up, ready to hit your companion to the side of you.. next thing the party sees is that bar table in splinters.

Well good luck :)

I say do it.

I believe there is a difference between "rage" and "frenzy."

Whereas your fellow players may have a concern for you fighting things till the death, they shouldn't have to worry about you attacking them.

... from what I've seen "rage" played, you don't do anything extreme without a will save to pull out of it.

Well if you look at any of the stories/short stories of the Rage, it could be a completely unreasonable bloodlust similar to the frenzied berzerker. There are a few stories of the dragons/half-dragons attacking anyone and everyone with no regard for own safety or friendships.

You might also want to check out the FR forums, they may be able to help you some more.

That is a very cool, yet very powerful PC concept.

As a DM, I'd be very worried about the balance of a character that has a Silver Dragon as a cohort. I'd be worried about you and your dragon out-shining the rest of the party, making the other players feel like they are in the background of the campaign.

However, if it is acceptable for the power level, I'd have no problem with it. As your DM, I would probably role play the "Rages" of your dragon companion. I might even make your character susceptible to some of the rage effects, since you're a half dragon.
