I expected to die, but... [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, basically I have two questions based on the situation in my gaming group. 1) would you be annoyed by my character?
and 2) what can I do to fix that?

Here's what's up:

I play a N (though she's recently acted more NG) half-elf rogue 5 / fighter 1 who's extremely proud. Basically, if she steals something, its because the owner didn't deserve to have it... if she kills someone, they didn't deserve to live. And despite any logic or proof that says otherwise, she can basically do no wrong and sees herself as better than anyone else. What's more, she fears no consequences of her actions. This belief came in part from a super-easy escape from jail in a fortress town.

She recently acquired an artifact intelligent greatsword (Flamebane) because none of the other party members wanted it and the idea of sneak attacking with a greatsword is just funny. Plus, that's a lot of d6s.

Now, last meeting, she, the monk, and the party fighter went on a stealth mission to disrupt an opposing army. By horribly failing a hide check, the fighter was captured. Attempting to rescue him, we move into the camp itself, splitting up. My rogue finds the fighter's dead body (he died in interrogation) and gets really angry. Invisible, she attacks the general of the army (a giant half-orc, really angry, at least 12th level or so to our 6th). Now, I expected her to die. As he dropped her to -4 hp in one hit, she expected to die.

She didn't. Basically, the sword saved her. As in, it has now chosen its preferred wielder and won't lose her, but someday may expect a favor she cannot refuse.

OOC, I was told I can "die" once a month without actually becoming dead. To me, this further increases her pride and lack of knowledge of her own mortality. So how do I play something like this without ******* off the other players? I don't want to keep reminding them that I got the cool item that keeps me from death, but I don't see the character being anything but recklessly brave and trying to carry out idiotic plans on her own.

Thanks for any input :help:

I would be more annoyed with the dm for putting such a powerful artifact in the game at those levels, as it tends to overshadow them (especially if only one player has such an item.)

Your roleplaying of the character follows a logical course, but do remember that it is a cooperative game, so maybe tone some of her pride and ego down in play.

Pride and ego bring their own baggage. Your dm is the one to make consequences appear for such things as these.

Just don't take more than your share of the spotlight and keep it IC and you should be fine. Roleplay how you want, but be sure to listen to your group if they start hinting that you're going over the top. Roleplaying should not take precedence over everyone's fun.

Going on a tangent...you can sneak attack with two handed weapons? Is that legal? lol

the favor needs to be something really humiliating. Intelligent weapons like to be in control, use this to take her down a peg.

Yes, technically you can sneak attack with anything... my DM has already told me that ballistas are out of the question, though, even if I'm within 30 feet. It's not looking good for trebuchets either.

The fact that her intelligent sword HAD to save her should burn a bit of her ego. I mean, not necessary, but it could be a way to not go on the nerves of the other players! ;)

This is a really good point. Being saved by some(one, thing) else does not build you up, it makes you feel like a child. If your character lost bladder control and someone else started to diaper her, it wouldn't make her feel invincible at all, and I don't think she'd start lording her "invincible urination" over all the other characters.

Exactly we had a half-orc that was fond of using the halfling as a improved weapon.

Ideas:

1) As was stated, dependence on someone(something) else to pull your character through a near-death experience should indeed be a blow to your character's immense pride. There should be tension between the weapon and wielder, perhaps even creating a situation where the weilder no longer wants to use the weapon out of concern that it will once again have to come to her rescue. In front of everyone else, no less.

2) One free death avoidance per month should never go to anyone's head. Your character should really be no more reckless than before, because what happens once that one save from death is used up? Is your character suddenly cautious now? I don't think it should change her outlook much on her overcompensating bravery. Remember, she's not immune to death, she's just going to be saved from death once every 30 days. Note that she's got another 29 days to go now where she can die just as easily as anyone else.

Are you sure the sword is an artifact? You can easily make a non-artifact intelligent sword that could do exactly what you described using the rules in the DMG. It would still be far above the recommended wealth of a 6th level character, however...

As I understand it, you only know this OOC. IC, you have no idea, so that's the problem solved.

Even if you know it IC, is this character really likely to take the word of a magic talking sword over her own common sense? This is her life we're talking about.

Sword: "Go ahead, pick up the burning symbol of doom. You won't die, I promise."
Character: "Yeah, right." <checks for traps instead>

Such a powerful artifact would quickly attract the attention of much more powerful beings.

Well, this is once a MONTH... and a month is a long time when you are an adventurer.

When a battle takes a minute, a dungeon takes a day, and the entire campaign lasts only a month in-game... That's not that much of a problem.

You're 6th level; so how about you talk to your DM about getting your character killed again? If you deliberately work it so that she charges something stronger than her and stupidly gets killed, your DM might be nice enough to have a friendly Druid cast True Reincarnation on your character. Then have the Reincarnation spell turn her into a halfling. A short halfling. Or, if she values her looks, a dwarf!

That should take her down a peg; and you'll be working with your DM to advance the plot, because often times a DM would like to do something dramatic, but can't because it would kill a character... now he can.

So you have a TN rogue... if she is of the "undecided" neutral type this could change her alignment (i.e., personality/morality) depending on how she reacts to the hit to her pride. Which way it changes is up to you.

When another Charicter is about to be killed step in & sacrifice yourself so that they may live.

yeah i understand the delimna she's having problems cause no matter how hard of a situation your in you always come out unscathed.

Permanant Atribute point loss would help with that. Or something of the sort would help her realize that she's only mortal, possibley another npc that keeps declaring how amazing they are. That might get under her skin..

Give your DM a slap and ask him why your character has a weapon worth in excess of 200,000gp. Now I suspect this is an "idiot power", your DM did not want your character to die. Ask him to give the Sword one use of this ability per wielder, have your character teased by the sword.

Sword: "Good grief woman 3000 years since I was forged and you've managed to use up my (whatever this ability is called) faster than anyone."

That should deflate her ego, and a lippy sword could be fun to RP.

Yeah, unless the DM expects the sword to go away soon, is cursed, or otherwise has SOME sort of limiting factor: this screams of bad DMing =\

Oh yeah, keep in mind that an artifact intellegent item of that much power would probably have an ego score high enough to make you do just about whatever it wants. So although it might not be cursed per se, it might be a curse in disguise.

No backstabbing with siege weapons. :weep:

My group allows it (partially because the rules don't say you can't, but also because it is funny when it works). Although buildings ARE technically flatfooted, we don't allow sneak attacks against them =P

Ok, now a free death in any campaign should never be allowed. Either one of the player's made a stupid move, or it's a bad DM. I know what it's like to be TPK'ed before, it's not fun, but that is no reason for a free death.

I say stick with the pompous air. It makes for a fun character. You just need to balance it with something like a secret and extreme fear of being alone in the world that gives her an unfaltering love for anyone who would call her "friend". (G-d, that was cheesetastic) You seem to have a good start with pseudo-sacrificing yourself for the captured fighter.

Having the sword force you to betray your friends at a later date could be fun too.

Unless you're a Mountain Giant or Troll.

Then it's aaalllll goood.

Also, this isn't an Artifact by a long shot.

Just not appropriate for someone under say.... level 15+?

Then again, we don't know what other powers it has =P But yeah, this weapon is WAY beyond your characters level. So unless the DM expects you to part with it soon, He should never have given it to you.

Just to clear things up, technically, I didn't "DIE", I dropped to -4, was stabilized and protected by the sword, and recovered to 1 hp naturally over the course of a day before walking back to town.

Also, I know OOC at least that when (not if) the sword asks me for something, I won't be able to say no.

Wait, wait, wait, wait.

You were [b]stabilized[/i] by the sword?

I don't want to even think ho wthat works, with the lack of hands and all that.

Normally you have a 10% chance each round to stabilize when you're at -1 or lower HP; if you fail, you lose 1 more HP that round.

The DC 15 heal check needs to be either 1) Be done by someone else or 2)Be done by you, but I think you will still lose HP b/c it could be defined as a strenuos action (also, you have to be consious, -1 and lower makes you unconcious).

You could also (if you are still concious, via a feat, gear or spell) cast a cure spell or consume a potion.

Well I have three comments ...

1) Your character's alignment is ... odd ... the attitude is NE, yet you say she's acted NG.

2) There are better ways for characters to not die. I fail to understand why the DM allows your character to live but killed the fighter seemingly arbitrarily. If he wanted you to live, why not just say "you stabilise" and have you recover left for dead in a ditch when the camp moved on?

3) The attitude change could either be wildly egocentric "I'm unkillable! I must be a GOD!" or utterly paranoid "OMG I can die!"

Wizards published a feat, Heroic Destiny, that gives humans and demi-humans a free death daily.

Yes, alas, that is published and that is a high prerequisite feat. This sort of character should not be able to gain that sort of power. It breaks the game.

As mentioned before, the sword saving her might actually bring her ego down a bit. Also, have you considered a bit of extra paranoia after her monthly death? After all, until she dies, she has a nice safety net... after that, dead is dead. That might help counteract some of her feelings of invincibility.

As a sidebar, your character sounds more like chaotic neutral to me. Living only for yourself without really maligning anyone else and defying all rules and regulations is the very heart of chaotic neutral behavior.

The pre-req's really aren't that tough. Any human decendant can pick it up at level six, even with no bonus feats. Along the line you get a reroll and an action point. For a human fighter it requires virtually no investment.

And once a month game time is hardly game breaking. Personally I don't like, but I don't think you can really argue it is game breaking. the ability to become useless for a fight once a month with no further penalty doesn't seem to detract from the play experience of the other players any.

I disagree as well. You can build a successful campaign around the posession of a powerful artifact/magic item; in addition, whoever has the item isnt necessarily the one who would be best to use it.

If there wasnt a /Fighter 1 on the end of that Rogue 5, a greatsword wouldnt be within the proficiency set of the rogue, and any enhancement bonus it might have granted would make up for the -4 to attack with it.
