| HidroliX07-11-05, 10:54 AM | Dudes that dont like psionics! dont say i am already overpowerd enough or something! I am level 9 Psion egoist! with methamorp. and afflicted werewolf The dm already took energy ray of me.. ITS TO POWERFULL!! While the mage of lvl nine is allowed to cast a spell that do 2d6/leve fire damage. Methamorp.. Hydra is crying dm! Bulette is SAD dm... what ever i do to defend myself! he does NOT like it! So is it maybe a smart idea to Become a Druid of the same level? I mean he gots no exp. with Psionics... And druids are familiairs to him! and i dont wish to be a mage. The mage i am always walking with in the party is always my buddy but i dont wish to copy his character. So any ideas? thoughts? thnx in advance |
| Dragonsblood07-11-05, 12:21 PM | Judging by your signature you're obviously a munchkin. Maybe that's what your DM has a problem with and not psions. (Even though psionics are broken IMO) |
| Arkonth07-11-05, 12:25 PM | Perhaps you could explain exactly what you want from us? I'm having trouble understanding what you were saying in your first post. |
| Kiri Sittori07-11-05, 12:33 PM | Dudes that dont like psionics! dont say i am already overpowerd enough or something! So any ideas? thoughts? thnx in advance Translated: "I have a L9 psion who has metamorphosis, who has been inflicted with Lycanthropy. The DM doesn't like it when I become a Hydra or Bulette with this power, especially when I use it in self-defence. This same DM doesn't allow me to use Energy Ray, even though he allows the party's mage to have Scorching Ray... Should I change my character to be a Druid instead? I haven't really done anything with psionics in this game, and the DM knows druids better; I would consider becoming a mage, but we already have one. Please help? Thanks in advance." Well, what I'd do is talk to the DM, and ask him whether it'd be better for the game if you were a Druid instead of a Psion. |
| Ut-Napishtim07-11-05, 12:44 PM | I mean he gots no exp. with Psionics... Well there's the problem right there. Did you ask the DM to include psionics in his game even though he didn't like them and you knew he was unfamiliar with them? If so, then you're just asking to get nerfed. Now if he came to you and asked you to play a psionic character without you knowing how unfamiliar with the rules he was, then you should be mad. Bringing in a new character at 9th level will probably be difficult too though, so I'd say you're pretty much screwed either way. :thinks: |
| Fargren07-11-05, 12:55 PM | The only way yopur character, as a psionic, would be too powerfull would be that that DM isn't making you face the correct number of encounters a day. How many times do you generally fight without resting in the middle? |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable07-11-05, 12:57 PM | Needlessly nerfed? I won't say I understand all of your predicament, as your text isn't that clear (how about giving us more info? ). But ask yourself 3 questions: 1): Are you the most powerfull party memeber? (always a good sign...)? 2): Do you routinely beat creatures of a higher CR than your level? ( DON'T attribue it to "strategy", be objective)? 3): Could you take on your entire party and win (or do very serious damages)? 4): Does the rest of the group find you overpowered? If you answer yes to these question, you may be too powerfull for your group. DE-power and play something balanced (for this group). If you answer yes to question 4, you ARE overpowered. Period. Now, even if you answer no to all these question, the DM may still think you're too powerfull for the kind of campain he want to make. Though luck. Plead your case, but don't overdo it. If he still don't think you're balanced, de-power. He knows the power level of the campain (hey, it's his, remember?). If, as a DM, I want to play a low-powered campain where you learn to trully fear the rampaging hordes of orcs, a half-feral half-giant barbarian won't fit in the game. Yes, as a player, you get your say in the kind of campain you want, but let's face it, if you don't fit in a given DM's game, find another. He will find another player. |
| celtredleg07-11-05, 03:55 PM | Thats why I donnt allow psionics. I dont really understand them because I just wont take the time to learn the rules. I have other things to do. So, why are you playing psionics with a DM who doesnt understand them??? Thats always asking for trouble. He doesnt know how to build a good challenge for them, so nerfs you instead. |
| HidroliX07-11-05, 05:04 PM | Question;1): Are you the most powerfull party memeber? (always a good sign...)? 2): Do you routinely beat creatures of a higher CR than your level? ( DON'T attribue it to "strategy", be objective)? 3): Could you take on your entire party and win (or do very serious damages)? Awnser: 4): Does the rest of the group find you overpowered? 1. Yes, with a the paladin in our party. We are just as strong I geuss. 2. Most of the times we are in a party and beat level 12 creatures. 3. I can kill the entire party, if I play it smart. 4. One thinks I am overpowerd. But his only argument is I am a psionic. He says everything in that book is unholy. Question: The only way your character, as a psionic, would be too powerfull would be that that DM isn't making you face the correct number of encounters a day. How many times do you generally fight without resting in the middle? Anwser: This is a VERY big problem indeed. 1 encouter every three days. Question: Well there's the problem right there. Awnser: The master Dm was indeed unfamilair with psionics, but however the co-DM was very familair with them. so he allowed it with the watching eye of this co-DM. Question:Judging by your signature you're obviously a munchkin. Maybe that's what your DM has a problem with and not psions. (Even though psionics are broken IMO) Awnser: Uhm thats just a Joke. Most of the time I dont even fight when the party encounters a fight. Why? Becouse I dont like to fight  . and the rest of the party is so much weaker... I allow them to gain more xp so they catch up with me! But when they cant make it I am always close to them! And thanks for the translation of my very unplessend text of english! But he Does not use Scorching ray! he uses incinerate or something like that! Its not een official spell! but made up by the Master-Dm. And it does 2d6 fire damage/ level. 100+10/level. and if you still dont understand it! look to the translation! I have a L9 psion who has metamorphosis, who has been inflicted with Lycanthropy. Thanks in advance. |
| Colmarr07-11-05, 11:29 PM | I think a more precise translation would be: I have a L9 psion who has metamorphosis, who has been inflicted with Lycanthropy. The DM doesn't like it when I become a Hydra or Bulette with this power, but what else am I supposed to do to defend myself?!. This same DM doesn't allow me to use Energy Ray, even though he allows the party's mage to use a researched spell that does 2d6 damage per level... Should I change my character to be a Druid instead? The DM doesn't have much experience with psionics, and he knows druids better; I would consider becoming a mage, but we already have one. As for the question itself, there are competing rights and responsibilities here. Both you and the DM have the right to enjoy the game. But what many people forget (more often players than DMs) is that they have the responsibility to make sure everyone else (including the DM) does too. It is a big demand to require the DM to learn the psionics rules. S/he dropped themselves in the mess by allowing them in the campaign in the first place, but that doesn't mean you should thereafter revel in them. With an eye to making sure everyone enjoys the game, I would recommend that yes, you create a druid character instead. |
| celtredleg07-11-05, 11:44 PM | Some people just arent cool with psionics. Because of that, they just dont use them, or they dont know them well enough to play against them. For party peace, I would recommend switching classes. Or live with being nerfed. Personaly, thats one big reason I dont allow psionics. I dont know them, have hated them since ADD first came out. If I let somebody have them, it would definatly unbalance stuff because I would not know how to fight them. Frustrated player equals no fun game. Frustrated DM equals no game at all. |
| Feriin07-14-05, 10:17 PM | Sorry for the thread ressurection, but I have been away for a while and feel the need to comment on this thread. So without further ado.. The spelling errors and abuse of the English language alone make me want to tear my eyes out. Also the improper grammar is terrible to say the least. Change your sig to show your real intellgence and wisdom , both would be someplace around 3 or so. Dudes that dont like psionics! dont say i am already overpowerd enough or something! | Archangel_James07-14-05, 10:58 PM | Hydra is crying dm! Bulette is SAD dm... I think I might have to sig that. I haven't laughed out loud in hours. |
| Jaime_Wolf07-14-05, 10:58 PM | Any of you spouting the Psionics is overpowered IMO need to go to the psionics boards and read the stickied posts regarding the topic. Psionics is not overpowered, and I would go so far as to say that very few things in D&D are overpowered. Most often, the DM either tailors their game to their own fantasies rather than to the party he or she is DMing for. This leads to at least one of the people either being useless or god-like. Underpowered characters can be seen, and I have no problem with people complaining things are underpowered, but few things are overpowered with a capable DM. Only exception to this would be the dervish, which, when completed, lets them take out one enemy nearly instantly once a day, and eliminates the ONLY reason not to take a full attack, movement. And sure you can say that they can only do it a certain amount of times per day, but it lasts so long and they get so many of them by 10th level that they're unstoppable. But I digress, just read the post in the psionics boards. I have friends who thought psionics was overpowered too (though largely because they couldn't competently make a character, the dwarf fighter doesn't like to use heavy armor because it limits his speed...). |
| HorizonWalker07-15-05, 12:27 AM | I wasn't aware that there was an armor type in the universe that could limit a Dwarf's speed in 3.5. |
| celtredleg07-15-05, 12:38 AM | I am NOT saying psionics is overpowered, I am saying I dont like them. I am allowed to not like them. They are not core, I dont have to use them if I dont want to. I dont care if there are 1,000 threads saying they are not overpowered, I wont read the threads and I still wont allow psionics. Its a matter of taste. I feel psionics belong in Sci-Fi. I like them fine there. I dont think they mix well with sword and sorcery. Others disagree and they love psionics. Fine play them. In your game, not mine. Psi fanboys yapping that if I would just check them out I would realize they are better than Makers Mark. Sorry, not going to happen. Deal with the fact that many DMs are never going to like psionics. |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable07-15-05, 12:47 AM | One of the reason for this is bad reputation. You hear psionnics are broken (and you hear it a lot...). When you first see a psi in play, you're wary. The psi does anything powerfull, you see proof it's overpowered. It's a vicious circle. (not that they're not overpowered :D ) Psi don't fit in every game. Having psi is a significant change in a game's background and worlds. |
| StormCrow4207-15-05, 01:35 AM | I wasn't aware that there was an armor type in the universe that could limit a Dwarf's speed in 3.5. There is one really hefty piece of armor in Races of Stone that will slow a dwarf (it has a base AC modifier of 10). |
| soulknife07-15-05, 01:54 AM | When you say you dont fight because you let the other players catch up to you thats a sure sign you are overpowered. change your character to a druid. |
| IceFractal07-15-05, 02:51 AM | Well Druids are pretty strong themselves, in fact, with the right build, they can be rather stronger than most Psions. However, it'll be a type of strength that your DM is familiar with, and somewhat more support oriented (although you can turn into a Legendary Ape and kick ass, plus still being able to cast spells with Natural Spell). Just make sure that you keep your level and wealth. You're voluntarily changing your character for the group's benefit - you shouldn't get penalized for it. |
| Vacerious07-15-05, 03:52 AM | While the mage of lvl nine is allowed to cast a spell that do 2d6/leve fire damage. ummm....actually, the phb says that scorching ray only deals a static 4d6 damage. keep in mind that the caster can cast multiple rays (hence, multiple 4d6's), but the fact remains that scorching ray does not deal 2d6/level damage. ----edit---- also, while it may seem like a good idea to become a druid at first, keep this in mind: its your character. you don't have to do anything involving your character (including race and class) to appease your dm (unless he/she has specifically banned a certain race/class/feat/etc.) do whatever you want to do. if you want to be a mage, go ahead and do so. two arcane casters will always be better than one. |
| MoogleEmpMog07-15-05, 10:47 AM | I love the suggestions to switch to a druid to KEEP from being overpowered. I'm sure that will help. The psionics rules are very well balanced, almost certainly better than the core magic rules because the latter were crippled by far more 'legacy spells' from past editions that had a much less rigorous game development process. Admittedly, the psionics rules are predicated upon the 'x encounters/day' concept even more than magic. Psionics are also extremely fitting for sword and sorcery - half of the 'magic' in the Conan stories seems more like psionics, for instance. However, asking a DM to learn new rules (if, for some reason, he has to know every rule his players employ) is a big thing. In this case, I'd say by far the larger problem is that, from your description, you (and the paladin?) are much higher level than the other PCs. PCs more than two levels behind the party tend to be more baggage than assistance. I'm also curious if your DM applied the +2 level adjustment and two animal hit dice for being an afflicted werewolf. |
| Andrew_98007-15-05, 01:34 PM | The psi does anything powerfull, you see proof it's overpowered. It's a vicious circle. (not that they're not overpowered ) we have been in this situation before, my psion got the energy push power and if the taget fails a save and a strength check while within 5' of a wall it does 4d6. that was too much and people whined. Then the mage threw the scorching ray, 4d6 touch attack and nobody said a word! which is more powerfull? i'll let you call if this is hypocracy or not! |
| soulknife07-15-05, 04:31 PM | They arent overpowered. the rules are balanced all the way but since Hidrolix seems to be a munchin and doesnt get that when you say you dont fight because you want everyone else to catch up that that means your a munchin. psionics arent overpowered hidrolix has abused them and made them overpowered. I fear the same overpowering might happen to his druid!!! |
| IceFractal07-16-05, 03:02 PM | I fail to see how that makes him a munchkin. In fact, if he really was a munchkin he would be lording it over everybody and trying to stay as far ahead as possible rather than letting them catch up. It seems like he just goes out and actually does stuff while the rest of the party squabbles. Well, that's too bad for them - if they're going to spend their time arguing rather than accomplishing stuff then they're not going to be as powerful, and it's not his fault that they keep choosing to do it. |
| soulknife07-16-05, 09:20 PM | I guess i never looked at it that way. If thats the truth then the other players are the problem. He wants to progress and roleplay but his fellow players dont. it depends on which is the problem then. |
| BeyondFated07-16-05, 11:12 PM | Mister HidroliX, you need to kindly talk your problems over with your DM, and other players. Present your case, that you feel that you have been unfairly nerfed, and that wizard is more powerful, because the DM gave him a powerful spell. Perhaps the problem is that you better understand the mechanics of the game than the other players, this would give you an advantage in character creation that would lead to a power gap in later levels. If thats the case, then it's not your fault, per se. If, indeed you do know the game better than your friends, try to help them along in character creation to make them more powerful. Also: Sorry for the thread ressurection, but I have been away for a while and feel the need to comment on this thread. So without further ado.. The spelling errors and abuse of the English language alone make me want to tear my eyes out. Also the improper grammar is terrible to say the least. Change your sig to show your real intellgence and wisdom , both would be someplace around 3 or so. Wow, that doesn't make you seem like a huge jerk at all. Heaven forbid someone not be fluent in english. People like you make me mad, you shouldn't put down people just because they can't spell, or type well. Instead, why don't you try to help them? Crazy thought, I know. |
| Ze_Mighty_Vegetable07-18-05, 12:43 AM | Hydrolix, answer this simple question: If you played any of the other PCs in your party, would you like adventuring with your psion as a DMPC? If the answer is no, then you gotta admit you are too powerfull for them. Either give them ideas how to boost their power level or tone down your power. It's pretty obvious your PC's not balanced with the others. |
