I have a question about Alignments [Archive] - Wizards Community

My character is chaotic neutral and my GM has ruled that I should take an alignment hit (pts that will push me towards an evil alignment) because I took a cleric and hung him over the edge of a boat because he refused to heal me in a polite way (he's healing tactics is by groping the person to heal him and my character , who just fought a demon didn't feel like puting up with that). Now my arguement is that I wasn't going to kill him or throw him overboard and his arguement is that since the cleric was wearing platemail I was threatening his life. He claimed that I attacked an innocent cleric even though I took no violent actions towards him until he did burning hand on myself, even then I fished him out of the water after I threw him in. So my question is do you think it is right that I take the alignment hit or was I playing chaotic neutral right?

You were sort of playing chaotic-racy there from what I can discern, because you did sort of assault him in retaliation to him, not refusing to heal you, but for healing you by his (albeit unessesary) method.

The cleric in question would have been doing you a favor by healing you in the first place, and then you demanded that he should heal you without any groping involved, to which he obviously declined. It seems as though your character was sort of mugging the cleric for his healing, but you didn't actually cause any harm to him, despite your assault and battery.

The part in which you "didn't feel" like being groped is understandable as per a chaotic alignment, but hanging the cleric over the edge of the boat could be considered an evil act, even if only slightly so, since the cleric wasn't harming you or threatening to, but rather, he was offering to aide you, conditionally. The cleric obviously felt threatened, and attacked you, so you shoved him overboard and fished him out afterward.... It appears as though you were making amends for your behavior, and the quarrel was settled.

If the DM is going to give you some points that push you toward an evil alignment, it definitely isn't without cause, but at the same time, very few points should be issued.

What sort of alignment point system is he using?

Making a threat is, in my opinion, neither a good act, nor an evil act. Reacting violently to an invasion of your "personal space" is inherently a CN act.
You were playing CN correctly.

I have so many negative comments floating around my brain about your DM and the appropriateness of such freaky NPC actions that I will just keep my mouth shut.

Heck you could of been playing CG and I would say you were playing the alignment right. Trying to take advantage of someone who just finished what was probably a rather intense battle with a demon...yeah, there's a good idea.

You even fished him out of the water as well, so although angered by the clerics actions, you weren't being malicious either. I'd say you were playing CN to the tee.

He's using a nine point system. The way he explained it to me was that when I get nine pts against me my alignment changes to an evil alignment. He gave me three pts for the scene for attacking an innocent cleric.

Thanks for the support :) , I had to other people at the game who argued for me also. I was just curious what others thought.

That alignment point system is interesting. Does it work the other way? Do good acts cancel out an equal number of 'evil points', and eventually count towards your 'good meter'? Because I think that's part of the benefits of being neutural: committing good and evil acts in a balance, not just choosing the middle road.

I don't know because I've done some good acts and it hasn't been mentioned. I would like to think that the pt system there is a sort of checks and balance thought.
