Ok im a 5th lvl rouge 3rd lvl assassin. I found a time cube in a dungeon cause i was sent to find it along with my party. What I learned is that it freezes time for a minute. Then as we neared town a man gave us a message.Saying that the man we were doing this for was corrupt and wanted the time cube for revenge. But also i want to keep the cube to rule kingdoms. So do I give it to the man that sent me on the quest, give it the man who gave me the letter or keep it for myself and become powerful beyond belief?

I'd have to say; talk with your party and decide what to do as a whole. I know this probably isn't what you wanted as a response, but 1) We really don't know enough of the background on your adventure to tell you what to do; and 2) this doesn't seem like something you really need the board's help for. However, that being said... I'd likely keep it for myself. :)

Edit: just saw the post with your alignment, I'd probably go with keeping it; though only so I could keep it out of the hands of the "ruthless" man who wants it for other than just/good purposes.

The first thing I would do is conduct some investigation of both the guy who gave you the quest and the one who gave you the message. If you can't come to a conclusion of who is telling the truth I see only two choices.

1. Keep it and risk resentment from your party and the two men

2. Destroy the cube and avoid the whole dillema all together

P.S. Is the ability to stop time for a minute really that powerful considering all the other magics possible in DnD?

If you are an assassin and evil then you don't have a choice, you have to keep this, hide it from your party and use it to gain yourself power!

Do you honestly have to ask that? That is the equivalent of an Epic item. In the hands of an 8th level party. Guess what? The Dm screwed up big time.

At the OP: Take serious advantage of the artifact. Get a backup character ready who specializes in buffing, IE: Cleric, Druid, or Transmuter spec Wizard. hop on over to the CO boards and let them take the wheel with the character design.

Make 2 fake cubes and give them to both. If they ask about it, say that that's the cube you found :)

Tell every king, warlord, emperoro, and what have you. Sell it to the highest bidder, then before it exchanges hands, use it, kill him, overtake his throne, and use it as well as your new land and army to conquer all of existance.

Seriously, I thought this was common knowledge.

I would use it to take over the other kingdoms just make sure u don't let the wizards, sorcers, clarics, etc to see it because if a spell caster sees it they will want to take it. they might have a spell that time freeze doesn't work on them.

+1

I had one of my wizards specifically research a spell to do this (think Nystul's Magic Aura on steriods) in a campaign. Mind you, all it lead to was a bit more railroading down the track, but it sure was fun.

If I had a time cube...
I would have the CUBIC WISDOM that Transcends and Contradicts ONE-DAY-GODS - for I would create 4 simultaneous corner 1st days in Earth rotation, and the TRUTH of 4 corner 1st days will destroy all religions and FALSE gods, we worship today.
If you can't tear down and burn the evil Spheres, then your mind is puny, prejudice and unfit to voice your opinion on a single controversy. Zehir already existed in human form that, that he claimed the FIRST ones were the originals of. THERE WAS even A NEARBY TOWN CALLED NOD - A "NATION OF WOMEN" (KINDA LIKE Menzoberranzan) FROM where Khain GOT HIS WIFE. 4d6 drop one IS A LIE. Remember THAT THE FAKE god CLAIMED TO CREATE A 1ST DAY AND I HAVE CREATED 4-1ST DAY ROTATION.

No other MAN or god can claim such TRUTH manifestation.

I'd say that you have 3 (maybe 4) things to focus on.

1. Figure out the limitations of the "time cube" (you can't physically attack someone while using a time stop spell, so this is probably different. If your nifty item seems to good to be true, it probably is.)

2. Figure out the motivations and respective dastardliness of both your employer and the one who gave you the message. Try to do so in a way that puts neither the party nor the "time cube" at risk.

3. Figure out your priorities, and try to achieve as many of the important ones as possible. (These priorities would likely include, but not be limited to: following your ethical codes, staying alive, making a profit (of wealth, experience, or influence), and getting revenge of the people who put you in a cell.)

4. [OPTIONAL]

Go mad with power!
Use http://www.timecube.com/ as the source for your PC's sudden burst of insane inspiration and attempt to upset the accepted notions of how reality works. Use your cube powers to gather followers and intimidate foes until all accept the truth that time is cube-shaped. It could make for an interesting humor campaign.

I'm not familiar with this magic item?

Is it similar to nature's harmonious simultaneous 4-day time cube?

Agreed. possibly a third to show to your allies. Then destroy it in front of them.

What, bumbling n00bs with vast, mind-boggling power holds no story potential for you?

It all depends, is it a one shot item? If not, go crazy, rule the world et cetera.

If it is though, and you can have this unfathomable power, but once ever, then hoard it, gently caress it in the night, savor the power you hold. Hoard it for a rainy day, because once used you will be normal, normal like everyone else, but while you hold it you are a god, a GOD HAHAHAhahahHAHAHAhahahaha.
But what! what's that infernal ticking noise over your shoulder? Is it the sound of the inevitables creeping up on you, seeking to deny your rights to divinity? No! Never, it's mine, you shan't have it. Must keep watching. One eye over the shoulder, but the ticking, the ticking never comes, it haunts your dreams, the unending waiting for that dread sound that seems just.....inevitable.

And so, you degenerate into a gibbering paranoid madman, hoarding a potent artifact and living in your own filth in a gutter somewhere until you stumble across a band of adventurers and realize, to your horror, you have become a plot hook.

It holds definite story potential. It also harbors a headache from the Nine Hells. Low-level characters do not need high-level spells/items!

Wha-Wha-WHAT!?!?

Never give up loot like this. Look, you're an assasin (evil, right0), off whoever you don't like. The rest of those do-gooders in the party, see you in hell.

That king, he wasn't all that important anyways. You can do much better things with their countries.

Well, now you have a bunch of countries. You get to be captain dictator man! That's the best spot to be in :Dd

Hey, at this rate you're doing pretty good. Hell, why not kill off all of the "Wrong" religions? You can just go to their temples one by one and slaughter them. Once a god has no worshippers, he is no longer a god. Since he's not a god, why not go kill him off?

Well now you're in supreme power of EVERYTHING... Why not sho them your true divine nature and get some worshippers. You could be the one TRUE god.

But there are more gods on other planes, those will need dealing with....

Headache? For who? Can't be the DM -- (s)he gave it out in the first place. Of course, on the other hand, I've heard more than one DM say, "where'd you get that from?" only to hear the reply, "You."

But isn't there always someone bigger waiting in the proverbial wings to take it away when the fun is used up? http://www.cal.net/~wilsons/robot.gif

And thirdly, Frodo didn't need the Ring, but I'm told it made a heck of a movie...! :D

My bad on the gender. Yes. It happens. I made the mistake of letting my players have a Deck of Many Things. note, under normal circumstances, this wouldn't have been a problem. However, I have kept a running total of individual draws from the deck prior to the campaign dying: 79 draws, two instances of a player losing anything. Both were my brother's character, and each time it was him getting his soul removed. Neither of the other two players even lost a magic item. My lesson from that? Two of my players are lucky SOBs. Never give them random items like that again.

Yes, he did. Several scenes in the movie, and indeed the books themselves, had him use the ring as a means of escape. If he didn't have the ring in the first place, the trilogy wouldn't be called LoTR, now would it?

Note: This is just a counter-post. YMMV.

Do you know who he is going to use it against?

Step 1
If you do, offer the intended victim good rates on the first guys head and since its now a job your just making money.

Step 2
Your group takes the cube to the first guy and gives it to him, tell your group you need a couple of days for guild business. Then tail him until it's safe and death attack him. Then take the cube back. That way your group thinks job done, you have the cube and the guy who hired you cant complain.

Step 3
Go with making the fake cube and destroy it quietly without fuss, go to the intended victim (your current boss) and hand him the destroyed cube and collect your fee.

'tis always good to get what you want and get paid too.

Well, I've never seen that many draws from a Deck! I love the Deck, btw. Did they really declare 79 draws? Don't you have to declare upfront how many draws you're going to take and the Deck disappears once everyone has pulled their cards? Or am I flashing-back to 1e days?

And, if Frodo never had the Ring, he wouldn't need to escape the Ring Wraiths, n'est pas? Kinda feeds back to my comment with the transformer smilie. :D

Not sure this is just a counter-post. Thought we were, however obliquely, discussing the impact of powerful magic items on low level parties.... :P

Don't you have to declare upfront how many draws you're going to take and the Deck disappears once everyone has pulled their cards? Or am I flashing-back to 1e days? That would be mostly correct. The RAW-version of The Deck is that you declare how many cards you are going to draw. You draw them no matter what (unless the deck tells you not to...hypocrite). Once done, you can never draw again from the same deck (implying it's possible for multiple decks to exist). It doesn't disappear though, so the useless deck could be interesting.

"How much money can we get for this? What happens if we scatter the cards across the land? What happens if we stuff it down someone's throat that hasn't drawn before?"

As for the timecube... I have to agree with the RULE THE WORLD idea. Depends on the mechanics though.

I was the DM who allowed my party to have the item. Well i didn't really hand it to them they earned it. But i was/am well preparred to deal with whatever they do with it. I wouldn't have even allowed such an item near the PC's if as a DM i thought myself to unpreparred.
Yes it is a story session and the item is apart of the, destroy the world save the world setting.

But you guys have given him great advice, and i hope he pays good attention to some of you vet players instructing him. As i told him through various hints that such an item could cause him loads of grief. As any high level wizard seeing them using it, or hearing them using it, will put much effort into taking it from them.

The item itself was apart of an ancient ship wreck some 10's of thousands years ago. Back before magic ruled the lands. Then when some ancient wizard found the object and applied some magic to it he crafted Time Stop out of it.
Thats the short stroy of what happened.

If i was a player who had what they had, hear is my line of advice.
If i did keep it i would only use it in dier need, and not to be to flashy with it, showing it off everywhere i went. Then when I'd amass a higher level, then i would be more confident with using it.
The world is a high magic enviroment so people are use to seeing strange things.. But...
