Summary of problem: I get an Ally that's the figment of the imagination of a goblin "rogue" who loves explosions. What should it be? It doesn't have to be PC appropriate. An animal companion/mount/robot also works. The party mascot is a duck, so I'd like to work with that.

The whole story:

So, the campaign I'm currently in is this homebrewed system, mixing together D&D, BESM, and WoW pencil and paper (I didn't know they had that). Or maybe there's some compilation for the rules behind regular WoW. Hell if I know. It's besides the point. Anyway, the campaign is set in a modern-day world that recently got turned topsy turvy by the forefront of a fiendish invasion. Surprisingly, most of the world isn't actually affected much - only a handful of colleges, including ours. We call this game World of Williams. Ouch.

Anyway, last session I kind of screwed things up. We stopped a demon-summoning ritual. Unfortunately, the DM never made clear to any of us that we were supposed to wait for the ritual to be finished, so the NPC allies could capture the demons to learn more about the enemy. Now that that's screwed up, our organization (the campus's D&D club - go figure) will be taking a more direct approach to dealing with these fiends. Which is more than our four PCs can handle. So we've been taught a technique by which we can create an Ally. Effectively, we're giving life to a figment of our imagination (one for each player).

So now I want to know what I should create for my Ally? I'll just be creating the basic concept and the DM fills in the abilities. Just what kind of idea would my goblin prankster (rogue) come up with? He's obsessed with explosions, and we need a meat shield for the party. The idea has to be an original one; it can't be a pre-made character. Our gnome legacy (wizard) already tried to get Darkwing Duck. No go. I would really like to work in a duck into the Ally if possible. It's sort of become the party mascot. Ever since the gnome invented exploding wind-up ducks. We have since then tattooed a duck on the BBEG's chest, released another wind-up duck (which he tried and failed to crush, saying "You'll pay. Oh, the ducks will pay"), shot at him with a duck attached to an arrow, and left him in a prison dimension with nothing but a duck and the message "You can escape the demons, but not the ducks." There wasn't even a floor he could throw it against. He's since gone mad and disintegrated into the four elements. And other escapades. So I really want my Ally to have a duck motif built in.

Can you acquire the stats for a Chocobo/Riding Bird?

If so, adjust your riding bird to make it a lot more duck-like. Also, give it a sackful of explosive devices. If you don't like the idea of a giant suicide-bomber duck, then maybe you can ride on its back and throw said explosive devices at people in hit-and-run assaults.

I'm totally capable of getting that riding duck. Explosives . . . not so much. Besides, the allies we create actually become alive, with their own personality. And no obligation to remain loyal to us. Although they do regenerate if destroyed. I think. Point is, forcing it to be a suicide bomber is both morally wrong and a good way to get it to try to kill me. Any other thoughts? (Not to suggest I don't like the riding duck. I may still end up using it).

Mmm... Well, you kept making references to how you liked ducks, and you liked explosions, so I figured exploding ducks were the next logical step.

Since that doesn't really work...

TRANSFORMER DUCK! You have a duck with the shapechanger subtype, and it can morph into three forms!

Form 1: Riding Duck. This will be the default form.

Form 2: Decoy Duck. It will look like an ordinary wooden decoy, the sort that hunters will use to lure ducks out and shoot them. You can use it for the same thing, throwing this decoy duck into out of reach spots so it can create a path for you, or placing it in rooms you want it to survey; it might not be able to move, but it can see and hear just fine. And if anyone finds it, what will they make of it besides "Huh. A wooden duck. What's that doing here?" And while they're puzzling that out, it can become form 3...

Form 3: Wereduck! Give it stats similar to that of an owlbear (which may increase as it levels up with you), and the same attack style. This Large Monstrous Humanoid Duck will rip your enemies to shreds!

I like. I'll probably get hit in the head with the conch shell again for proposing a Transformers duck, but it'll be worth it. Long story: basically, another gamer is almost wearing out his welcome he geeks out over Transformers so much. The last conch shell incident came when our characters needed a battle code, and I suggested Pafra. Four members created it for an actual school project (a final, no less. With good grades!). Anyway, the creators included myself and the Transformers geek, and he sort of annoyed everyone with sharing it so often. Too bad. Pax nigoni! (Fire the rocket!) makes such a good battle cry . . .

But as I think about it more, Glitch (my goblin) is also known for making a lot of inventions. So a robot just seems right. A superhero robot with a duck on it. Mind you, the duck isn't actually a requirement, so if anyone has other fun ideas, I'll hear them. Duck isn't so much Glitch's thing as the party's thing. Heck, when most BBEGs are left slobbering in a corner about the ducks are out to get him when you're done with them, it comes to be a point of pride. Come to think of it, Glitch had nothing to do with any of the duck incidents so far. (I even had to miss the session that started it all). It's Duckgnome who started it. I don't even remember his real name anymore.

If you have access to Dragon 355, you might want to look up the Cannon Golem. That could be any shape you like to 'imagine' it, and it's just made for blowing things up! :D

Well, I could just say it's a robotic duck cannon. It uses homebrew rules, remember? It's a very free form system. All I have to say is "robotic duck cannon," and my ally is a robotic duck cannon. Mind you, it won't be all that powerful to start with. It doesn't grow any stronger unless I spend points to improve it - points that otherwise I'd be spending on myself. Because that's how we grow stronger. Not by leveling up.

Although, like I said, we're currently also lacking a good melee beater type. Right now I've got stuck in my head some sort of robot dino (rex-like with a clubbed tail) that just has some marking depicting a military/Rambo-esque duck with machine gun, ammo clip, cigar, and sneer. (Which would itself make a nice Ally. But we've got enough ranged support.)

It could throw explosive eggs.

It could throw explosive eggs.

That it could. That it could. Although as I consider it more and more, I don't think I want my Ally to work with the explosives theme. It's more just a common trait to all goblins in this setting: they like big booms. They like to tinker around, and hope it goes boom. Even if they're caught in the blast. However, explosions do run contrary to the party's need for a melee beater. And I know DuckGnome is planning on making a lab assistant Ally. I really want to make sure this ground is covered.

A "riding duck" with warforged traits meets all of your requirements, I think. Your gnome can tinker with him (by re-imagining him, perhaps) as you go, and he gets a host of great melee abilities. For rough stats, look at some of the Eberron riding dinosaurs (or just the core dinosaurs) -- feather him and you're pretty much already on the money.

Works for me.
Except for the part where I called your character a gnome. My apologies.:embarrass

Right. The gnome is the one who started the whole duck thing. In fact, Glitch the goblin is really the only one left to jump on the duck bandwagon.
