| smellyhairyhippie09-19-07, 03:01 PM | i'm playing a dwarven cleric of thor in my current campign. Ironically i am paired with an elven ranger, and elven rogue and a gnomish (i dunno what class he is, the player hasnt revealed it yet, i know it involves him getting a crapload of aoas and using dodge to hop around enemies like a checkerboard.) so we get attacking by bandits while on the way to a city, and i ironically, im the strongest figher in the party. We're level 10 by the way. So were engaged in battle angainst these bandits (who turn out to be were tigers) and we eventually beat them, only after realizing that the ranger died. he was going along on negative hit points because of the die hard feat. He refused to tell us what his hp was. I kept calling out how he was doing and he wouldnt respond. As the cleric its my duty to keep the party healed, but when they dont tell me they need healing how can I? are they forgetting that im a cleric because im so good at fighting or are they just ignorant? i dont know... |
| Einvaldurinn_mikli09-19-07, 03:07 PM | That's his fault. Nothing you could or should have done differently really. |

Only choices are cast Deathwatch or Status on the Ranger: So the DM can tell you if he is wounded, Ranger ca'nt keep it a secret anymore with those spells: They let you see how wounded he is. |
| IdleAltruism09-19-07, 03:18 PM | It sounds like your group likes to keep secrets.....This doesn't help you as PCs. To be an efficient healer/buffer you should probably learn what the party members HPs are and keep at least a mental note of how much damage each party member has taken(pretty much every member of the group should do this anyways). Its not a big secret what class you're playing or how many HPs you have. If they just don't want to get healed, well thats their problem. |
| MrCustomer09-19-07, 03:20 PM | You should be able to make a spot check to determine a rough idea of the seriousness of a person's injuries. After all when he is low on hit points he should be bleeding, bruised and pretty beat up in general. If the player is insisting on not telling you how many HP for RP reasons, then you need to tell him that he has to give at least a hint on his physical condition to you, after all your PC may not be able to see a HP bar, but he most certainly can see the huge gash across the chest and the puddle of blood at the ranger's feet. |
| PantherFern09-19-07, 03:26 PM | As the cleric its my duty to keep the party healed, but when they dont tell me they need healing how can I? If you called out and asked if he needed help and there was no response (though I presume he was up and acting normally by your description) then you could only presume he was fine. If he died that's his problem. Maybe his player will learn to pay more attention to his character in the future. Or, if you asked the DM how the ranger looked to you and he said he looked pretty badly wounded, you could have healed him up anyway assuming that perhaps he was in too much shock to respond. |
| Thubby09-19-07, 03:32 PM | you cant heal wounds you dont know exist. its their responsibility to let you know they are hurt. he died, it his fault. |
| Salla09-19-07, 03:52 PM | Besides, you're a cleric of freakin' Thor. Kick butt first, heal later. :D For that matter, he's a Ranger. He can use Cure Wands and Cure spells of his own. |
| doomblade403x09-19-07, 05:23 PM | The person who said spot check in this thread was dead on. You will know a character is wounded, however you most likely won't have any idea how wounded. The only real question I have is WHY they are all being so secretive? Do they want to die? |
| Some_call_me_Tim09-19-07, 06:09 PM | As the cleric its my duty to keep the party healed, but when they dont tell me they need healing how can I?Hate to say it, but the player of the ranger is a certified doofus. OK, I can understand not wanting to turn the roleplaying into just a tactical game with everyone wandering around with a green and red bar above their heads, but if so he needs to be prepared to ask for help. I don't really like telling players I got 37 of 52 hps left either. I will just say I'm wounded but not severely. When I'm more than half down, I usally say "Ouch." If I'm down into negative hit points and have the die hard feat, I'll say "only my legendary fortitude is keeping me going" or better yet, "HELP!" I'm sorry I wouldn't waste a status spell or whatever on that clown. Those are for when they can't communicate with you, not because they want to play "I got a secret." |
| LordTarmos09-19-07, 07:08 PM | AS cleric you can do one of two things you can cast status on him which gives you his exact hitpoints, or instead of asking for hit points you can ask the dm how the characters look, slightly wounded, moderately wounded, seriously, critical. these will usually give you an idea without people giving you out of game knowledge or maintain a sheet and add up how much damage each person takes. Either way remember if they do not ask for help when they need it is there fault not yours. they have to work as a team. take 3 seconds to say i need healing. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph09-19-07, 08:30 PM | He's worse than dead, Jim. |
| OneWinged4ngel09-20-07, 04:28 AM | That's his fault. Nothing you could or should have done differently really. There absolutely is something he could and should have done differently: Delay Death, Revivify, and the like are all available at that level (if he has access to Spell Compendium or the original sources of those spells). Status and Deathwatch are also available. He also should have insisted on having the group actually use a decent enough level of description for people to actually have a clue what's going on. Sure, an hp total is metagame information, but when you're running on Diehard, you can damn well SEE it, because the person is basically torn to shreds, should be dying, but through sheer force of will is makin' that tatterred body stand. You might not say "I have 3 hp," but you bloody well be able to say "I have such and such awful wounds." Basically, he should have insisted on not playing with a complete doofus. |
| Hack and Smasher09-20-07, 08:45 AM | As a cleric of Thor its really not your duty to keep anyone healed, Thor's dogma is much more focused on standing on your own 2 feet and self reilance. Unless your homebrew has a radical different one from the actul Thor. In short bash first and heal if you feel like it. |

In short bash first and heal if you feel like it. i dont know about that, dwarves are all about family, "the clan" and all that. keeping your friends in the fight i think would go with that, not to mention the war priest prc example is a dwarf. |
| smellyhairyhippie09-20-07, 03:46 PM | i think the reason he didnt want to reveal his hp was because of our dm. and yes as a cleric of thor i do place kicking ass as a priority, as my +1 throwing shocking returning warhammer will tell you, but this battle was kinda wierd. The gnome used some sort of color changing cloak to stun everyone in the vicinity and only only me him and 2 of the bandits werent stunned. and he was having the crap beat outta him with his flat footed ac at only 19. I think i might just tell him to tell me how hes doin just something along the lines of "I need healing". Cause our DM has a reputation for killing people in the past. I mean that may be more difficult with a dwarven cleric of thor, but i guess the scrawny elves fear for their lives... :P |
| Salla09-20-07, 07:14 PM | i dont know about that, dwarves are all about family, "the clan" and all that. Dwarves are individuals and any given individual may or may not care about that sort of thing. It's not a genetic predisposition. |
| Callista09-20-07, 08:05 PM | No, but it's cultural--any dwarf who grew up in a normal dwarven society is 90% likely to be that way. Just like somebody who grew up in American society is likely to value personal independence. Anyway, it's up to the player to decide whether his dwarf believes that way or not, and he hasn't said one way or the other. Unless the dwarf has no sense at all, of course, he'll heal somebody who's obviously on his last legs--after all, you can't kick butt when you're dead. Being a cleric of Thor, he might be more likely to buff the guy so he'll be too strong to be in danger in the first place, though. In character: Your dwarf is now a bit impressed and a bit annoyed at the same time: His friend just kept fighting, even though he should've been dead; and most likely, that'd impress anybody who worshipped Thor. But he's also annoyed, because his friend just got himself killed because he was too stubborn to ask for help when he needed it. Or else, he's annoyed at himself for not figuring out how bad off his friend was before he keeled over dead. Suggestion: Resurrect your friend, then give him a piece of your mind (in character)! Out of character: Ask if you could talk to everyone for a moment before your next game. Then say something along the lines of, "OK, you guys know how the ranger died because I didn't know how bad he was hurt? Let's not have that happen again. Next time somebody needs healing that bad, tell me when it comes to my initiative. You don't have to have your character yell for help if he wouldn't be the kind to do that. Just tell me how hurt he looks. My character can spot it even if he's keeping a stiff upper lip--I don't have ranks in Heal for nothing, and if you're barely conscious with your spleen hanging out, I think I ought to be able to tell, even if you're badass enough to still be up and fighting." |
| Salora09-20-07, 08:36 PM | Did you consider the possibility that the Ranger's player wanted to die? He could have been bored with the game, or his character and wanted to re-role. Perhaps he has even asked the DM if he can re-role if he dies. Since you guys seem to be big on keeping your thoughts to yourselves, it could be something that was arranged with the DM and the Ranger. |

Your character can't do that in character: Talking is done on your turn not others. |
| Dravda09-21-07, 12:21 AM | Hee hee...my favorite tactic (if I'm fighting undead) is to drop area healing spells on players, whether they want it or not. It's like artillery and healing mixed together. The only problem is that at 10th level, I'm not sure if you can cast that spell yet. Still, it'll be a nice fix in the future. -Count Dravda |
| Some_call_me_Tim09-21-07, 10:53 AM | Your character can't do that in character: Talking is done on your turn not others. Ahem. That's not what the rules say. Speak In general, speaking is a free action that you can perform even when it isn’t your turn. Speaking more than few sentences is generally beyond the limit of a free action. |
| Prelate09-21-07, 12:12 PM | if someone is at negative hitpoints, they are going to look about like someone involved in a 4 car accident - and they weren't wearing their seatbelt. it should be extremely obvious to anyone, let alone someone with a heal check, if someone is in mortal peril. that said, if the Ranger never called out for help while conscious, maybe he will re-roll something with enough common sense to ask for help next time ;) |
| RobbyPants09-21-07, 12:53 PM | and i ironically, im the strongest figher in the party. Well, you are a cleric, so this should be no surprise. he was going along on negative hit points because of the die hard feat. This is what we call a self correcting problem. If the PC doesn't want to accept your services after you've offered them, then he chose to die. As long as the player isn't getting mad at you for not healing his PC, then don't worry about it. If he is getting mad, either hit him with a folding chair or politely remind him that you offered to heal him. If the players are going to insist on keeping secrets from you, then they can't be mad that you're not a mind reader and didn't know he was about to die. ;) |
| Callista09-21-07, 09:51 PM | Well, the PLAYER can tell the cleric's player that his character is looking hurt... even if the character is unconscious or too macho to yell for help. Speaking OOC is something you can do all you want, even if your character's out cold. |
| RobbyPants09-22-07, 12:05 PM | Well, the PLAYER can tell the cleric's player that his character is looking hurt... even if the character is unconscious or too macho to yell for help. Speaking OOC is something you can do all you want, even if your character's out cold. It can also be seriously frowned upon depending on how you do it, what you say, and how the other guy acts on it. |
| NinjaPenguin09-22-07, 09:22 PM | I don't think its stretching the OOC/IC barrier much to say 'Yeah... Rangerboy looks like he's about to fall over. He's not screaming for help, but he looks visibly and badly wounded.' That's just stating a plainly visible fact. |
